Really you can just read Dune and be done. Messiah and Children are okay, but it just goes downhill from there.
I disagree. I found Chapterhouse: Dune to be the best in the series apart from the original. Everything between those 2 is a bit tedious, however. But that's just Frank Herbert. Dude was just a bit too smart for his own career.
Maybe it's just because I read it after reading all the others in a week, but Chapterhouse always struck me as so much more of the same.
I finally grabbed the Pillars of Creation, Naked Empire, and Chainfire for the Sword of Truth series. Pillars of Creation is, so far, the weakest of the entire series. Hopefully Naked Empire picks things back up.
Do yourself a favor.
Take all of your Sword of Truth books, put them in a pile, and burn them. They're poop from a butt.
I know, I've read most of them (up to and including Chainfire).
I don't remember finding any of the Dune books tedious. I enjoyed them all, but it's been a few years since I read them now and I don't remember much except for the first two (probably because of the movie and series).

I've been on a bit of a silly bro book binge. I recently read The Average American Male, just finished I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell, and am reading The Game. They are all very entertaining.
Finished The Forever War yesterday. It was pretty terrible, though I admit the idea of soldiers failing to age due to relativity and coming back to a constantly changing earth was a very neat concept. In terms of everything else, though, the characterization was poor, the sex was unnecessary, the enemies were totally obfuscated, and most of it seemed intentional. Only it didn't work.

I disagree, but I don't care enough to go point by point. In short, I liked it, and fuck you, sir.

Speaking of sci/fi, you guys know how PR works, right? PR hot air and hyperbolic statements are something we tolerate, and understandably so. I mean, what company wouldn't portray themselves/their wares in the best possible light.
I'm asking because this post I read elsewhere on the forums is so fucking moronic, I'm bleeding from my ears.
After rewatching Project Natal and Peter Molyneauxwhatever, I just have to say FUCK YOU to Peter Molyneueedstoshuthisface. "Sci-fi writers have never imagined" this technology? Have you ever read any science fiction ever? Have you seen a sci-fi movie ever? My god, the man is incredibly ignorant, an incredible jackass or a giant retard. Someone should have stopped him and informed him of what a gigantic tool he was making of himself.
So I finished A Canticle For Leibowitz. I'm kind of let down in two regards. I was expecting more of a pay-off with the divinity of Leibowitz and an explanation for the Wandering Jew.

TFS, that book looks really interesting. I have a terrible history of hating women's/gender studies classes and loving books about gender studies and the concept and reality of feminism, which makes no sense, but there you go. I wonder a little if they would actually let me order it at the bookstore here, since Korea's (general, by no means encompassing of all Koreans) policy about GLBT issues is "We've never heard of it, no one could possibly be it, and if they were it wouldn't be okay." You should let me know how you like it when you're finished.
I finished A Void yesterday, and the ending was... surprising! I think I would have approached the entire novel differently had I known what would happen in the last chapter. I'm left wondering if certain portions of the book had relevance that I missed in light of the resolution, or if they had no ultimate purpose other than to serve as stylistic digressions. But it was amusing, all in all!
I mentioned it earlier, and I'll repeat it now - if Balefuego or anyone else wants to read it, I'll mail my copy to them now that I'm done.

boo, queer theory - i could never get into it. i'd be interested in reading a biologist's perspective on it, though, because the biology of gender is one of the reasons i couldn't buy into the "entirely socially constructed" arguments

I think that my problem with gender theory in the classroom is that all of my teachers have been so strongly opinioned that actual structured debate was practically impossible. Obviously it's a subject that inspires passionate response, but the classes I took felt less like being informed than being indoctrinated. Which is silly, given that I'm obscenely liberal to begin with.

It is good times.
I've really taken a liking to short stories lately.
This post is patently false.
You just shit all over my childhood.

What's it about?
What spring does with the cherry trees.
Does "transsexual woman" mean that she started off as a dude and thinks she's a lady or vice versa?
I was going to ask this question but I thought I'd come off as a smartass.
I'm assuming she's a man, or was a man.
What spring does with the cherry trees.
I guess it was rude of me to say "thinks she's a lady".
Whoops!
I wasn't planning on it
I love Messiah, and I need to finish Children at some point
Plus I'd just like to have the original trilogy on my shelf
