Blasphemy Day - September 30th. What are you doing to celebrate it?

ElitistbElitistb Registered User regular
edited October 2009 in Debate and/or Discourse
As the Center for Inquiry puts it:
Blasphemy Day International takes place every September 30th to commemorate the publishing of the Jyllands-Posten Muhammad cartoons. Blasphemy Day International promotes free speech and solidarity for the freedom to challenge, criticize, and satirize religion without fear of murder, litigation, or other reprisals.
Here's a link describing it in more detail:
http://www.centerforinquiry.net/events/international_blasphemy_day

So what do you plan on doing to celebrate it? I plan on treating it like "Talk like a pirate day", a fun little holiday to give some face time to. Maybe I'll say something bad about Christianity. Probably not in public, however, because I live in Oklahoma and I value my life.

I was gonna say "I'll spend the day reading these forums", but really, I do that on most weekdays (when I'm at work waiting for these backups to finish).

My business classes are pretty much full of Muslims and Asians. I might eat meat in front of them and ask for some recipes on cooking rice.

    Er, why does this sound...boring?

It's not like I don't already say shit about religions. Of course, I tend to word things so that I (a) don't sound insulting and (b) confuse and destroy my opponent's argument.

Masturbate to the Muhammad cartoons and you'll be striking a blow for free speech.

Although they're really not all that sexy.

That people even feel there needs to be a day like this should disturb you more.

Remember that this is international. Imagine trying to do this in, say, Iran. In Salt Lake City you can be kicked out of public areas for even joking about the Mormon religion.

I blasphemed the holy spirit quite some time ago. So I'm not adverse to marking this occasion. What can I do to ensure I'm disenfranchised from some other religions?

Well for starters, I just now realized that I could perhaps draw Mohammed. But further research shows that it's not expressly prohibited in the Qu'ran, and interestingly enough he's depicted in a frieze in the U.S. Supreme Court building.

Most of traditions I've come across are only applicable to anyone formally inducted into the religion. So I guess I'm not sure where to proceed from here. But I'm sure in the grand scheme of things, if such a thing exists, being a self declared atheist will close most doors, pearly or otherwise.

maybe i'll focus on islam for a change

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/8279276.stm
A leading Egyptian scholar has demanded that people caught importing a female virginity-faking device into the country should face the death penalty.

Abdul Mouti Bayoumi said supplying the item was akin to spreading vice in society, a crime punishable by death in Islamic Sharia law.

The device is said to release liquid imitating blood, allowing a female to feign virginity on her wedding night.

There is a stigma about pre-marital sex in conservative Arab societies.

The contraption is seen as a cheap and simple alternative to hymen repair surgery, which is carried out in secret by some clinics in the Middle East.

It is produced in China and has already become available in other parts of the Arab world.

The device is reported to be on sale in Syria for $15.

Professor Bayoumi, a scholar at the prestigious al-Azhar University, said it undermined the moral deterrent of fornication, which he described as a crime and one of the cardinal sins in Islam.

Members of parliament in Egypt have also called for banning import of the item.

I think he means one of those that covers everything BUT the ass...

I can see the point of this "special day" but can't help but feel a lot of people are going to miss the point completely. I can say "Gordon Brown is a cunt" in public without fear of reprisal because we have free speech laws etc that cover that kind of thing. If I said "Jesus was a cunt" in certain parts of the U.S, I imagine the reaction would be about 80% more lynchy. But see, if that's my fucking opinion, I shouldn't be afraid to put that opinion across (it isn't, Jesus was awesome). I think we as a species should really be past immediately resorting to violence against someone with a different opinion, even if they are being a massive douche about the way they're getting it across.

But we're not. So now we have a day. And that will change things. Really.

Although this has an ostensibly positive message of "Free Speech," it seems to me it's more about going out in public and being a douche about religion. I'm not interested in making a special effort to shit on people's beliefs, even if I don't agree with them.

I had some proselytizers comes to my door yesterday and invite me to Bible study. I stood outside for a bit and talked to them about my views, reasons for disbelief in the New Testament (or Torah / Vedas / Qur'an) etc. My wife flipped her shit that they dare come and disturb us, but they were civil and respectful so I don't see a reason not to return the favor.
