I took apart a broken pair of headphones, popped out a speaker, and was able to get sound from it via my Zune, but only for a second (which I attribute to the headphones having been fucked to begin with).
How easy / worthwhile would it be to just take some 3.5mm cable from my PC to these speakers, either directly or by splicing it onto some speaker wire? Am I going to get everything set up and realize that my on-board sound doesn't put out enough juice to sound decent?
I'm 99% certain you'll have to run it through an amp.

It is awesome and excellent and well worth the rent. Though I do not regret my purchase either.
I figure if I like it enough and see enough replayablity from the co-op and online play, it may be a purchase. I would just like to try it first.
For example Arkham Asylum was a perfect rent. Awesome game, but no replayability for me. Brand new games are expensive, and I would pretty much have to play a demo first before buying one otherwise.
There are exceptions to my "Need to play it before I'll drop $60 on it" rule, but those are games that come from Bethesda, Blizzard, Valve, and Bioware.

Anyway, the Forza 3 demo is amazing but I'm terrible at it.
