I would pay to watch you on a tv show where you just stare at a canvas for 30 min. Then, in a sudden flurry of movement and a earth shattering cry of "BAM" a mystically awesome drawing suddenly appears.
yeah i think this is definitely the style i'll be working with
i feel like being loose will help me figure out spatial distances more than pouring over useless details
I think that this sort of resembles some of the watercolors that Bill Watterson did for Calvin and Hobbes. His drawings never really came off as fast and loose but they were whimsical.
thanks doc, i haven't forgotten about your image either, it's coming
for my design class, our first project was to design something that represents us
it has to be some sort of object
so i went with 1950's style cereal box
doesn't get much more "me" than some sort of 50's product design complete with cutesy animal mascot
inside the box is going to be a little card with some information on me on it. it's designed to match with the box basically and is about the size of a short bookmark
the illustration looks great, but there seems to be something missing. I think there is a lack of interest in the background colour. Maybe you could try experimenting with some colours which contrasts the cute character more. Maybe an extra element like a spoon may help to make it more interesting too.
loving everything except the font on the "sweetened puffed wheat" -- it looks out of place to me, doesn't seem to match with the other 50sesque fonts on the box. might just be me though.

Hey, if you really want to go retro, throw "sugar" in the title.
I'm not sure what happened, but apparently that word became synonymous with "cancer" sometime in the 80's.
Witness:
"sugar frosted flakes" became "frosted flakes"
"sugar corn pops" became "corn pops"
"sugar crisp" became "golden crisp" in spite of an over-50% sugar content by weight, and the mascot went from being "sugar bear" to "super bear"
My personal favorite are "Sugar Smacks" which is now "Honey Smacks", but were briefly known as "Smacks" proving that, yes indeed, implying that your cereal is made out of heroin is better than admitting to its robust sucrose content.
Also relevant is that Dig 'Em the Smack-pushing frog originally didn't make the cut during the cereal's transition to "Honey Smacks", as the marketing department realized that amphibians have nothing to do with the manufacture or consumption of honey (totally unlike sugar and/or heroin). Thus, Wally the Bear graced the cover of Honey Smacks for one year before Dig 'Em was demanded back by a mob of torch-and-pitchfork wielding cereal fans.
Also, Wally the Bear sucks compared to this Honey Ohs badass you've created, Beavo.
Seriously, look at this freak:
That makes me want to buy my fix from a frog, I'll tell you what.
Love the style on the box cover. Brings back memories of Hanna Barbera cartoons as a kid.
I have to second Brokecrackers comments though. Just as someone would point out errors in anatomy even in cartoony artwork I find it equally important to make sure your diction is accurate when creating an "advertisment." Puffed Wheat, Shredded Wheat, Ohs, Flakes, Chex are all very distinct types of cereals so it kind of throws the picture off when what its advertising doesnt match the picture.
Also I think it would be a more dynamic picture if the bear were actually interacting with the Ohs. With a spoon or holding an Oh or biting an Oh. As it is now its like the Ohs are hot and hes afraid to touch the Ohs, or hes preparing to Karate Chop them. An advertising rep might ask you, "If these Ohs are so delicious and hes sitting right there why is he not leaping in?"
Kind of reminds me of comic book artists that draw the punch comming and not the followthrough. I get the feeling the bears about to do something interesting to those Ohs but Id rather see what that interesting thing is and not the moment before.
Crap that was longer then I thought it would be. Sorry.

sneakers, i see your point, and i'll keep it in mind for next time
i've already gone well above and beyond the call of duty for a project that's basically just supposed to be like "this is what i like!" but yes your points are very valid ones, and i really appreciate the comparison of design fundamentals to follow through on a punch, that was a good analogy. unfortunately, this was printed early this morning and i don't wanna go through all sorts of trouble to get it reprinted when it's due tomorrow afternoon. but i agree 100% and thanks a bunch for the crits i don't want you to think i just ignored you and thought your crits were invalid or anything
also because i've been busy with school today and real work, my drawing of the day was also school stuff, but i thought it was pretty neat
i made things out of the letters in my name
nic: the second design? that green sugar crisp one is not mine
it's an actual design from the 50s for sugar crisp
ohshi-
Well. That's embarrassing. My bad, I thought that was an update...
Well I prefer the orange background of yours over the greenish of the original then. Also I prefer the placing of your logo at the top, as opposed to the bottom in the original.
You really preserved the authentic look!

Those are are "O's" of Whole Grain Oat.
I don't think there is a ceral that makes "O's" out of "puffed wheat."
am I the only one who is bothered by this?
That is my one and only crit, the rest is retro gold Beav...
pure 50s
i'm kidding, sorry broke cracker
thanks for the crits all!
it was based off a sugar crisp box so i copied much of the font and text:
it printed so cool too, pics later
