You get access to the online after beating the first gym.
You go to the basement of any Pokemon Center, and they'll give you a pal pad, which you use to register friend codes of whoever you want to play. Then you go online, and you're put in a lobby where you can see everyone else who's on your friend list that's online.
On A DS or DS Lite, you can only access the wireless configuration stuff from the main menu of a game that supports it. They finally decided to just put it in the options screen for the DSi.

You don't even have to beat the gym leader (in platinum at least) just get to the town the first gym is in

I think in diamond/pearl you have to beat him, but I could be wrong.
Those are out of production, and not really supported anymore.
I got "lucky" and bought one off a roommate, it's pretty damn hard to get working, and every time I restart my computer a new issue comes up that I have to solve with trial and error. A bit aggravating but it's the only way I can get online with my ds because my Uni's wireless sucks.

man
checking out my Diamond cart again just reminded me what a fucking hassle it was to play through with an all-Rock team
see my friends and I all decided to do something like this gym thing amongst ourselves, picking a type, then playing through the game with nothing but that type, then making a team of it, then battling each other
I got Rock
do you have any idea how aggravating it is to fight the elite four with an all-Rock team
I was so proud of that team
Omastar
Tyranitar
Aerodactyl
Rampardos
Cradily
it was my team of prehistoric horrors and they touched the untouchable
they broke the unbreakable
(that team is more or less what I'd use for the rock gym if that's what I go with)
I'm just pleasantly surprised I didn't have to try juggling connections and bridges for a half hour before it said it was working, and then hopped into the game to find out that, no, it in fact wasn't, try again.

although it doesn't level your dudes to 100 if you're playing over wifi
which fucking sucks
No pokemon over level 5.
They level up to 100 when you battle, but they are still hella moveset retarded, unevolved, and undertrained.
Could be a fun challenge.
They're kittens! Mew!
You're a tricky customer, Mr. Dixit.

do you have a wireless network?

It's like a second router that whitelists your DS/Wii

Nintendo discontinued that
Beat by Marsh
Yeah, I do.

I bought mine off eBay after they discontinued them and it works fine..Also they made them Vista compatible a while back i think
Connect your computer to the internet using ethernet, then set up your computer to share it's connection using the wireless card
Or set up your router to use WEP or no protection (not the best idea if you have lots of neighbors)

now if I can just throw it together before next saturday
I've never used my DS for that kind of thing. Would it work with me all the way in Sviiden?
what are they
Yes. It's a turn-based game so lag really doesn't matter.

I'll see how long it lasts, if It's any good I may do some training this week.
just give me what I want and I will cease scyther's killing rage
I mostly meant it it would drop a lot or time out and thus ruin the game or whatever. I don't know how good the DS is at online stuff

are you aragorn at the prancing pony except instead of the candle lighting your face, it is a DS?

tentatively
it seems like it would be kind of restrictive
It's looking pretty neat so far.
that's the point!
any ol' butt can make a balanced pokemon team with full type coverages
takes a stylish motherfucker to pick a type and go with it
What spring does with the cherry trees.
I mean that type, specifically! I looked at the list and I only saw 6 pokemon that I would ever use, and I'd want to be able to switch it up!
you is silly
