@Reimann: Are you talking about FOV, or something else?

    It's related to that yeah.

Basicially, with 3d systems you go through 3 basic steps (and optionally many other steps for things like shaders) in order to figure out where a point in 3d space will be drawn onto the screen. Each of these is a matrix multiplacation representing a homomorphism (eg: any combination of scaling, rotating, and translating).

The last one is squashing the rotated / scaled / translated points from a 3d space (potentially 4d if you are using quaternions) down into the 2d position on the screen. This involves a scaling factor. Basicially, you want things that are far away to be "smaller". And you can use geometry to calculate exactly what that number should be. But the correct number always looks wrong in a weird MC Escher kind of way.

So 3d programmers just wing it and tweak the number from what is "correct" to what actually looks good.
huh. It has been a good while since I set up the projection parameters myself but I don't remember this issue.

That's because most books just say to plug in a certain value. I have a great book from way back when by John Carmack (it's called the "little black book" but the thing is about 1500 pages) which has a lot of the background.

Another great reference is the first in the Graphics Gems series. (the first couple books cover more foundational topcis like this, later they get more specific into different effects and tricks)

And yet more benefits. I'll look for one if ever I live somewhere flat, which doesn't seem likely.

I kind of want to get one myself as a project, but I worry because I've said to Cesca before that if her joints ever recover to the point she can ride a bike I'd get her one. My concern is that if I got one she'd subconsciously feel pressured to try to ride it.
