Yeah, there was very little advertising of the film. I lucked out because I happened to read a review of the film in a local weekly and thought it sounded pretty cool even though I hadn't heard a peep about the film before the release. So glad I got to see it during its theatrical release.
When I was in S.F. I took a bum out to eat. He was panhandling in some busy area and approached me for some cash. Told me he was hungry. I told him I'd buy him dinner instead. Sat down and talked with him for about an hour in the restaurant. He was a pretty normal guy. Trying to find a way to get move to Arizona where his sister lived.
As far as nice things happening to me. My in-laws let my family live in their house for 5 months. All we did was do the grocery shopping(and pay for it) and help out around the house and yard. Really helped us out when we moved here.
every bum's always got a relative somewhere they're trying to get to
it's like the new version of being out of gas
yeah, some of the stories they come up with are pretty amazing
especially since some people actually buy them
my stepfather recently told me about a "nice guy" he ran into here in Washington that told him he was up in British Columbia with his girlfriend and she stole his car, so he was trying to get to some city in southern Washington because supposedly the police had told him that if he could get there they would give him a ride to somewhere else he needed to get to and I was just all, "what? you actually believed that?"

yeah I couldn't tell if he was trying to hustle me. But all he asked for after the meal was some money to buy some blankets at a $5 store. Most likely it was for a $5 dollar bottle of booze but who knows. It was pretty cold.
one time a meth head came up to some friends of mine and said he needed money because he'd just run over his baby with a lawnmower while mowing the lawn and needed money to get to the hospital
I put a guy up in a hotel when he gave me a really similar story Dru. I figured at least he couldn't take the money if I paid for the hotel. And he didn't try to get any money out of me. Really just wanted a ride to the police station in the next town over. It was late so I put him up in a hotel and picked him up the next morning and dropped him off at the station.
Not sure what he got out of it if he was trying to hustle me. I don't give out cash but I try to be nice and help a stranger out.

I can't wait until I'm not desperately poor so I can do things like this.
About five years ago I was driving a friend's truck, pulling a trailer. I accidentally scratched the hell out of some dude's bumper while trying to parallel park. I wasn't covered by my friend's insurance, I was up to my ass in credit card debt, and I was about two meals away from missing rent for that month, so I got the hell out of there.
It fucking haunts me to this day. I never wanted to be that kind of asshole, ever.

I don't really get opportunities dropped in my lap now that I'm out in the boonies.
I was taking my kids for a walk and met an old lady hobbling along with a couple of grocery bags tied to her rolling walker. I put them in my stroller and walked the half mile to the nursing home with her.
My previous story occurred while taking my kids for a walk too. I met the guy outside a homeless shelter. He was knocking on the door and trying to get someone's attention when I walked by. Some lady opened a third story window and told him to get away. He said he was stranded in the town and just needed a place to stay for the night. The lady at the window told him it was a woman's only shelter. It didn't indicate anything like that on the tiny placard near the door. It was something like "County Shelter Services".
So after that I asked if I could help and that's how I ended up putting him up for the night.
