<--- I live in NY. NY is a horrible place for nerds. There are none of us here, we are some kind of endangered species. It's like a cesspool for my interests, and if you attempt to approach random people and interact with them, they just shut you down. My circle of freinds really isn't into the things i'm into. They are good people, but I just don't have the connection with them that i could have if we shared interests.
Don't even get me started on finding a significant other, either. It has been a sad, sad journey.
I have tried Meetup, Geek2Geek, Facebook, Myspace, etc..and nothing. I am tired of being an outcast, and seem to be seriously unlucky when meeting people into...the things posted on this forum, pretty much.
Is NY just a barren stretch of singular nerdom? What types of stories do you have where your interests have gotten you into similar trouble making and influencing freinds? How many of you feel singled out due to social awkwardness because of this? Discuss.

But I think the bottom line here is that if all you're seeing of NY, or any particular place, is your room hell yeah there will be a dearth of people to hang out with
Go outside, do stuff, meet people, have fun
well with their short memories, they can constantly forget how awful you are
so yes
they are the battered wives of pets
But you're in the city where you could probably find anything if you look for it.

they played warhammer or D&D or liked comic books or otherwise shared hobbies with me
but outside of those shared hobbies they were fucking losers and i actually didn't enjoy doing anything with them except playing those games with them or whatever
i realized that these people are best defined as acquaintances and are not worth my time trying to invest a great deal of effort into being close with
because the truth is, i don't really like them very much
in some cases, they felt the same way about me but were too polite to really broach the subject
If you play any kind of tabletop, Hobby/Gaming stores always have open and planned gaming session. That is like an instant social circle right there. If you do video games, figure out when the tourneys are, or just go during high traffic days. I went downtown to play DDR on Saturdays when I was in high school and frequently ran into the same group of people.
