<--- I live in NY. NY is a horrible place for nerds. There are none of us here, we are some kind of endangered species. It's like a cesspool for my interests, and if you attempt to approach random people and interact with them, they just shut you down. My circle of freinds really isn't into the things i'm into. They are good people, but I just don't have the connection with them that i could have if we shared interests.
Don't even get me started on finding a significant other, either. It has been a sad, sad journey.
I have tried Meetup, Geek2Geek, Facebook, Myspace, etc..and nothing. I am tired of being an outcast, and seem to be seriously unlucky when meeting people into...the things posted on this forum, pretty much.
Is NY just a barren stretch of singular nerdom? What types of stories do you have where your interests have gotten you into similar trouble making and influencing freinds? How many of you feel singled out due to social awkwardness because of this? Discuss.
Oh teehee I live in NY too! I love nerdy guys and I agree there aren't enough of them around here! XD

Whats wrong with silky button-down shirts? I only wear those. They all have dragons or chinese lettering or fire on them.
part of the reason my fiancee and i moved to Toronto is she used to live here when she was in high school and had a bunch of friends here
and i had a few friends here too
so it was the best happy medium between her moving to my hometown (where she didn't know anyone) and me moving to her hometown (where i didn't know anyone)
but having lived here for a year, she's slowly come to realize that most of the friends she has here, who she has known since high school
haven't really grown up since high school
many of them still live with their parents, have graduated university but are having difficulty adapting to the real world outside school, can't find a job (or won't lower themselves to working schlub jobs like the rest of us) and have ignorant, uninformed worldviews that are the result of an emotionally stunted, sheltered existence
she realized that, outside of the nerdy hobbies that brought them all together (anime, sci fi, video games, etc.) she has fuck all in common with these people and has a hard time relating to them
but worst of all, that they're doing nothing to change any of these facts and are making no attempt at all to grow up, take responsibility for their lives and problems, and progress at all
they won't even recognize that these things are problems!
so recently she's had to go through a pretty painful process of realizing that some of her best friends are basically acquaintances at best and, in some cases, actually people she can no longer socialize with
Oh man, don't you guys have some awesome ren faire action up there?
We've got a pretty great ren fair near the Illinois border. Jousting, legit sword smiths selling their wares, all that fun stuff. Conversely, we get the freaks from two states.
