If said stupid thing involves me getting presents you should absolutely do it. If it involves you spending money that you could use on presents for me then you shouldn't. :P

why the fuck don't I have rank on steam now anyways
Can you buy presents and not give them to people immediately? I want to gobble up everything that is dirt cheap all sale and splurt them all out at my person at once.
Anyone know if this is possible? Because if it is it will drastically change my purchasing plans.

I don't think it is
I have tried to do it before and failed
You can. Unredeemed gifts, such as ones you email to yourself can be resent at anytime (to anyone) in games-->manage gifts

I just sent one of those 50 cent games to myself at my e-mail, and it look like it's going to work out like that. I really hope for the sake of whoever I get that winterbottom doesn't suck.

Not me. It's kind of a precautionary measure. If I want to buy something I have to dig out my credit card and fill in all the info. The process takes a bit of time and hammers the idea home that 'hey you're about to spend money.' For me at least, it helps reduce impulse buys.

so I can mod Torchlight while Deathspank installs

They are going to have an intervention for you. Jeff VanVonderen is going to tell you that you are hurting a lot of people who love you like crazy.
Only way I could see it stopping any damage from a stolen account is if the person opted to have steam save their billing info
