Thread in which we discuss Dinosaurs

Prepare for a thread of Jurassic proportions.

161x8p4.jpg

Sup gentiles, anyone else here enthused about dinosaurs? Well if so, then you've come to the right place. Here we can discuss dinosaurs, in all their glory, and all their horror. These prehistoric beasties are the cornerstone of paleontology and in the hearts and minds of many peoples. So please, share your thoughts on these loving creatures.

So, my fellow forum goers, what's your favorite dinosaur? I like the velociraptor myself, but it pains me to think that they may have had hair. So does this mean that watching dinosaur pr0n now makes me a furry? Not that I get off on dinosaurs or anything...let's change the subject. Do you believe that dinosaurs had hair? Share your thoughts on this controversial matter here.

What are your favorite forms of dinosaur media? Personally I love the first Jurassic Park movie and the first Dino Crisis game. Also, do you believe that, assuming it is possible, that scientists should bring back dinosaurs? I think so, since not only would it further science, be conversational, awe the world, and because I fraking love dinosaurs. On the other hand, do you believe that velociraptors were super intelligent and/or could communicate? And do you believe that the tyrannosaurus can only see movement?

Are you ready for the dinosaur apocalypse? No doubt at some time in the future there will be a dinosaur outbreak, either through genetic engineering, time travel, or any other means. That's why it is imperative to have a dinosaur survival plan, along side your zombie survival plan. What's your plan if dinosaurs attack?

So please, join me in discussing this wonderful topic and make constant extinction puns that are so old they're prehistoric. Pro-tip, BioWare should make a dinosaur RPG. And remember, this is the best thread ever.

yes, its brain may be the size of a walnut, but it looks so cool!

also, its arrangement of tail spikes is called a thagomizer, which is fun to say and was coined by Gary Larson! also to use as a verb, as in the following sentence: Dude look out, that stegosaur is about to thagomize the shit outta you!

I've always liked the triceratops, because it looks friendly yet would not back down from punishing a carnivore.

I am also fond of the diplodochus and brachiosaurus.

So my dinosaur knowledge is literally 25 years out-of-date at this point, and I get the impression a lot of old favorites have been renamed or, like, retconned out of existence. Can any biology folks give me an update on the status of Brontosaurus, Stegosaurus, Triceratops, Diplodocus, and so forth?

Not a dinosaur. Dinosaurs are named based on a specific hip structure I believe, so any swimming or flying "dinosaur" isn't actually a dinosaur.

Brontosaurus is a miss-classified Apatosaurus with the wrong head, and Triceratops is actually the juvenile version of Torosaurus (but the species as a whole is still called Triceratops)

also, dromeosaurids (like Velociraptor and Deinonychus) were probably covered in feathers, and T. rex may have had them as well (possibly only the younger ones or ones in colder climates)

The combination of Jurassic Park and DinoPark Tycoon at school in my childhood caused me to draft a very long list of cool dinosaurs that I would love to have in my very own dinosaur park. I remember almost none of them, but if Tycoon taught me anything, it's that the carnivores were bastards who always broke out of their paddocks (and for some reason never ate any of the tourists).

    I choose you, Spinosaurus!

Also, a new episodic Jurassic Park game is coming out soon. I await reviews.

My favorite has always been the ankylosaurus. He's low to the ground and pretty chill looking, which I admire, but he's tough and has spikes and a tail that could probably fuck you up. He's non-confrontational, but he also isn't a victim.

Something I always wondered about pterodactyls... They were cold-blooded, right? So were they poikilotherms, or did they only fly low to the ground (or for very short distances), or did they have some way to counteract the cold temperatures from flying? I imagine it wouldn't feel too nice to be an ectotherm flying through the air.

actually, they've found some evidence of hair-like growths on some pterosaur fossils (called pyncofibers), so the theory is that pterosaurs were warm-blooded like dinosaurs

I have always loved the herbivores that could fuck shit up.

Triceratops (of multiple varieties), Stegasaurs (same) and Ankylosaurs. Anything that weighed a couple of tons, ate grass and could ruin something's day with spikes, spines or a two ton club.
