That's why people hate him! They argue that he's been irresponsible by being so fanatically obsessed with Sasuke. (Also he's "retired" from the competition like five times and people are just getting sick of the drama.)
And yes, Akiyama's eyes made him retire from his job as a crab fisher and has hindered him in recent competitions - I know one time he failed on the half-pipe attack (where in you run on a halpipe thing over water then have to jump to a rope and swing across - he missed the rope, possibly because of his poor eyesight)
