He mentioned that they were bought out by Google. But his duo lingo thing seems entirely irrelevant and pointless in the face of the Google average translation thing. He talked about the inferiority of machine translation while I distinctly remember a video by Google saying that their machine translation, by scouring their web caches for average matches, is essentially flawless.
A company claiming that their new project is flawless? Then I guess it must be. Best not to question it.
And not that I'm conceding this, but even if the end result of duolingo does happen to be irrelevant, it's still both an ingenious idea and a great opportunity to learn language for free.
