I am absolutely wrecking the game as a pure finesse character. I am not using blacksmith or sagecrafting. I don't get what is supposed to make finesse hard. I use daggers and bows btw. Minding I am using the delightfully abusable stealth system.

It's worlds apart from what you can do as a pure might character. Plus you just said you're using the stealth. You're not really going toe to toe with the harder hitting mobs are you?
The Ettin Shaman are a good example. When I first got to that zone, a single hit from them brought me down to almost 10% of my HP. As a might character I doubt this ever happens.

Smokebomb, roll behind, press X. What shaman? Oh the dead one? That isn't a problem now. I also very rarely get hit anyway, but I have played a lot of god of war, dmc and bayonetta (which emphasize not being hit in the first place).
And scattershot wrecks big enemies in seconds. It is almost unfair.

I was playing a pure Might character for nigh 30 hours on Hard. I didn't have to dodge at all because my defenses made me invincible, as josh already knows. I just waded into the thick of things and started swinging. With Finesse, while not necessarily being difficult, either, I do have to be careful about being hit.
And I've already said it, but I love all the options available to me in combat as a pure Finesse character. I had some sustained abilities that granted me a buff and an AOE attack with Might, but that was largely it. I now have way more tools at my disposal and combat has gone from boring to exciting.

Yeah, as finesse at level 23ish I'm not finding it particularly difficult anymore. Enemies telegraph the shit out of their attacks, and since you basically only see new enemy types/attack patterns once a zone (so roughly 15-20 hours if you're doing all quests?) it's not that big a deal. I struggled with Ettins and Jottuns at first, but now it's just kind of a joke. Granted, really long, strung out jokes.
The only times I take serious damage is if I get cocky and start trying to parry things in the middle of a group just for the sake of it, that usually results in me getting staggered mid combo.
Also, I find I pretty much never use the dagger chargeup dash anymore; this is probably due to the fact that the roll attack has made it frustratingly difficult to charge out of a roll, but we'll see if this changes when I hit the top of the finesse tree.
Fun fact, I cleared a room of 12 tuatha with stealth and never had to fight one at all. Smoke bombs and stealth is almost entirely broken. Stealth is very useful at high levels and can be used extremely well once you know how it works. Also instant death is more or less reliant on your equipment: I have only failed to kill bosses basically and even then, I did kill a couple of them.
Also dispelling and lockpicking are definitely the worst skills in this game. No value to them at all.
Locking picking amazes me at how badly it was done. I liked Skyrim/Fallout lockpicking. In Amalur it feels flat and lifeless as well as being utterly irrelevant. At least Dispelling kicks you in the balls if you fuck it up.
Eventually they will all end up looking the same if they are going for max armor from pieces. Prismere, Dreadblade, etc.
I've recently started up a pure Finesse character and I am shunning blacksmithing completely this time around. It's pretty great to actually find upgrades in the field again.
Mang, progress slows to a crawl once you hit 30. I just got to Alabastra, and I want to unlock the final Mage Destiny before I beat the main quest. It took me all day to get from 30 to 32. The entire western continent it useless to me now, and Kloricon is borderline useless. I haven't left the first zone in Alabastra yet though, going to try and do everything in each zone, that should probably get me to where I need to be.
Also, Elemental Fury is the coolest thing ever.
Also also, Meteor is the coolest thing ever
Also also also, Tempest is the coolest thing ever. This is the most badass mage stuff since Dragon Age.
Also to the fourth, it does seem that no matter how overleveled you are in a zone, when ever you enter a dungeon the enemies seem to scale up to at least yellow names.
Everyone has a price. Throw enough gold around and someone will risk disintegration.

Everyone looks the same at the end of the game, unless you aren't going for the best gear...in which case, congratulations? You're a special snowflake? :P
So how exactly does masterwork work? I've had maxed blacksmithing and sagecraft on a pure finesse character for awhile now but honestly ive only made a few things cause its hard to find the upper level components for felblades/daggers or leather. I've got enough money that i feel confident i can salvage any armor i find with trollhide in the name but have been hesitant about swapping out my older armor just cause its got some + finesse skills on it and i havent found anything with an epic slot in it yet to gem that.

Ha, I didn't think of it that way. Ok, I will give you that one. But you can't deny the variety of the uniques and set pieces.

I am indeed enjoying the different models for everything. Much more variety than the Dragon Age games, for example.
even if you don't like the gameplay or the story, 2 out of 5 or 4.5 out of 10 are fucking harsh
this game isn't a bug-riddled shitfest, it's very solidly produced with good production values
it may not be the most inspired thing in the entire world, but it's not THAT bad no matter who you are
Wow, really? I'm not normally one to put much stock in reviews, but most of the time I agree with the scores. This is one of those rare occasions where I have to wonder if they even played the right game.
Like you said, the game isn't a bug-riddled shitfest, the production is top notch, and the combat is easily the best out of all these types of RPGs.
Sometimes when you see wildly different scores it is because the game is kind of a niche title, but that certainly isn't the case here.
To make up for those shitty scores I shall score the game myself:
Axen gives Kingdom of Amalur: Reckoning 16 Bananas out of 10 Monkeys.
A Capellan's favorite sheath for any blade is your back.
Question : So when you level a skill from a trainer, and then got to a Fateweaver and respec those points stay right? Or will I have to train them again.
I've been playing the game for about 25 hours (Level 21) and have pretty much cleared out the first zone and started on the main quest which currently has me in Ysa. I've been a pure Sorcery character but I'm thinking of going Might or Finesse for awhile just for a change and I was wondering if I could respec, and then just run around to all the trainers I've found before I allocate my skill points, or if I'd need to for the ones I've already used.
I think I'm getting to the point where enemies are getting to high level for the mats available to me in the first zone. Outside of getting lucky with a drop to salvage the best I can get is 'Improved' it seems.

I'm only 11 or 12 now, but I've dumped all my points into alchemy, detect, and mercantile, and it looks like I could have trained at least some of that for cash at various places. I'm hoping it's irrelevant by the time I'm way deep in levels (or I just respec then fast travel around to trainers filling in points down the road).
I'm pretty sure you keep points from trainers when you respec.
Also, this game needs mounts. Horses or something. Gnomish steam engine bipedal walkers would also be acceptable.

Been having a great time being the dagger all stealth murder machine. I went might/finesse for the +melee damage/cirt destiny. But honestly, the might will be worthless till I start using the buff abilities. I don't ever use the shield even with points in it. I find stealth to be very very fun, and I don't have smoke bombs yet. Funny enough its not hard to run, break LoS and let the "suprise boss" mobs reset to not being aware of you. You don't really have to obviously, but I nigh one shot the grave wretch on the early ballad quest that way. Also, just cause the mobs are fighting your escort companion, doesn't mean they are aware of YOU. You can still get stealth kills while your companion is fighting if they haven't actually gone to the red aware eye. I will admit that stealth speed is way way to slow. I definitely missed some stealth kills due to that. The stealth kill skill is just so good. Maxxed out I was one shoting the ettins as soon as I got to that area. And that is with no blacksmithing but found purple daggers. The most broken part of my character right now is the 2 piece Perfilious (sp?) armor bonus which is +2 to all finesse abilities. Now THAT is almost too good.
And lastly, I can't believe people think faeblades are better than daggers. Daggers are so freakin' fast, most enemies don't have a opportunity to do anything. I found faeblades interesting, but unweildy. I had a real hard time comboing anything because of thier crazy animations. They look cool as hell, but damn if I can use them for shit compared to those graceful daggers. The dagger charge is a great starter as you can free apply all DoT/weapons effects to a whole group with no retribution. Can't wait to get the 3rd tier attacks.
So how exactly does masterwork work? I've had maxed blacksmithing and sagecraft on a pure finesse character for awhile now but honestly ive only made a few things cause its hard to find the upper level components for felblades/daggers or leather. Include an Epic Gem when you're crafting chest armor. There's a couple crazy ones (e.g. 60% chance to stun an enemy when hit).
I'm using the +1 to all skills tier 4 or lower, since it lets me save points in weapon masteries and get my Adrenaline Rush up to 80% chance to trigger.
That said, I've decided to really only use Blacksmithing on my Chest Armor for most of the rest of the game. But once I hit level 40, I'm going to make myself the craziest set of armor you can ever imagine!
So I was admittedly a little concerned after reading some various reviews and impressions of the game, but ended up replacing my old laptop with a nice new gaming laptop, and decided to pick this up to give it a go. Thankfully (seriously, thank you Big Huge Games for giving us a demo for this game on all platforms!) I tried out the demo first, and after playing through it for the full 45 minutes, I ended up playing through it -again-. That pretty much sold me on this game.
If I had to describe this game to anyone, I'd have to say that this game is what I wanted Fable to be (and was sorely disappointed when it wasn't). Little bit of Fable, little bit of WoW, little bit of Skrim, all stirred together in one delicious pot and served fresh. The writing still feels a little generic, but I haven't gotten much further than to the Fateweaver's temple, and I'm a few hours into the game. I've been spending all of my time exploring, doing side quests, and crafting.
So far, pretty pleased with the game, and I'm only level 7.

i would sell it like this. Its an ice cream sunday. The story and world are the blandest bland vanilla ice cream ever. not bad, Just bland- uninteresting. Everything else in this game is beyond awesome toppings on the blandness. The combat is amazing (still finding new combos daily.) the character building and the gear chasing are also amazing. In the end it melts together and is awesome even if the base is not the best, the toppings are.
in the game I don't care why I am doing things, choice means dick all because you can't get invested in the blandness of the story- but I want to do all the things cause its damn fun.
I'm loving it man.

You can't get invested? I was completely addicted to the House of Ballads chain the whole way through, not to mention the little journals and tidbits you get to read in the webwood.
And there was one journal by a corpse in a cage near this cultist shrine at the end of a cave that was so creepy it had me jumping at any sound in the house on my way back out.
I dunno, I must suck at this game or something, but Might hasn't been good to me. I get my ass kicked all the time.
Also, how are you guys breaking Blacksmithing? I have a maxxed BS, but I still can't craft anything better than what I'm wearing.
Using gems helps a lot. Getting to Didenhall where they sell +10% damage components is also a big deal...
Alternatively, if you're Finesse:
1) Go to Shieldring Keep and buy the +3% crit component
2) Craft 6 of the +7% crit Utility gems
3) Make armor
4) Enjoy your 75%+ crit chance
At the moment I'm running +34% damage, +30% crit, 3.5 health/sec, and +1 skills. And that's not even wearing a crafted Helmet or Boots! And doing "sub-optimal" things like putting Frost Damage on my Faeblades instead of MORE CRIT.

I'm with mojojoeo. I couldn't have cared less about those elf LARPers or whatever was going on in the House of Ballads, and that seems like the best quest chain the game has to offer so I'm not really playing for any reason other than it's really fun.
I'm going to buy the guide today. I feel so lost in the mechanics of the crafting skills.

I know the feeling.
I downloaded the demo on Saturday evening and have been playing it over and over all day yesterday. I sent my husband out today and he traded our second copy of Skyrim and some other games in and got the game for €13 in the end I'm installing now and can't wait to start playing!
From the demo it does seem like a nice mix of several of my favorite RPGs/MMOs (my daughter said last night that the setting reminded her a bit of Rift as well) and it looks like the whole is greater than the sum of it's parts in this case as it all comes together so well.

I haven't gone deep into the main quest yet, but I found pretty much every questgiver to be overly melodramatic. Oh, you need to do this right now, or utter doom and destruction will befall upon us. That kinda detracts pretty badly from the immersiveness. Also, the Fae are unnecessarily pompous, but I suppose that's who they are.

edit: Yeah delayed till 2/20 or some such because they wanted it done right. Future Press is the best press.
I just assumed it would be. Well...crap.
It'll be soon and it's Future Press so it'll be fucking AMAZING. They've already said it'll be over 600 pages.
Paragon Battlemage
Champion Battlemage
I think I like the second one, but it's open for debate. Relentless Assault not causing any armor loss at level 6 is a strong pull into that build.
