it is pretty good! Certainly the quality of the writing can't be questioned, or at least I don't think I would want to personally, haha.
I disagree with some of your points about the game, though they seem to be fairly made and held opinions.
One criticism I do have is that the thing seemed over before it had really begun. I'm not sure how to word this, but the entire review felt like an introduction, and when I scrolled down and saw I was a paragraph away from the end, it was pretty surprising, I just thought you were going to be doing quite a long piece and I was still near the beginning.
Maybe it was because you tried to avoid spoilers and mentioning specific things, but it just felt that you held back from really making the points you wanted to because you didn't want to really get into why you thought a specific thing didn't work. I can get your reasoning, and that you wanted it to be spoiler free, but it seems like it would have been better if you had have just gone all out and used all the spoilers you wanted.
Anyway, I hope that I made sense there, and that you take away a positive feeling from this post. It was, after all, still a good review. I just know you hold yourself to a high standard, so I thought I'd express my feelings on the review in their entirety.
I guess I'm just confused as to what "Japanese game design" exactly is
Yeah, I think we may be talking past each other because everyone is saying those words but never actually defining what they mean.
For me, the stuff I'm getting really sick of is mostly specific to JRPGs. Teenage protagonists, hackneyed romance subplots that go nowhere until the very end of the game (and sometimes are just left dangling), overly convoluted storylines, villains who want to destroy the world because they are insane/just want to, long cutscenes with no player input, and dialogue that's on the level of a high-schooler's creative writing project.
I mean yeah there's a lot of shitty JRPGs this gen
but there's plenty of good ones too. Xenoblade, Pokemon, Mario & Luigi 2 and 3, Radiant Historia, Demon's and Dark Souls, Persona 4, Valkyria Chronicles
hell even Square managed The World Ends With You and Dragon Quest 9
I mean, what else would you call the battle system it uses?
Eh...
I wouldn't really put Pokemon into the same genre as Advance Wars.
Pokemon is definitely an RPG, I think.
It's just that there's this weird dichotomy where if you want to enjoy the single-player, you're kind of out of luck, because the battle A.I. is still fairly primitive and the story is basically the same as it was since the first game.
But if you want to enjoy the multiplayer, you still gotta do a shit-ton of grinding in the single-player.
And, again, it's been like that since the first game.
And God help you if your regular battle partners include people who care about EVs and IVs and other insane shit like that.

There might be an article in this.
Or how Pokemon is stagnating but people aren't as bored/angry about it as they are with Final Fantasy.

Oh man.
I would actually have to interview people for that.
Act like a real journalist and finally use my degree for something I want to do.

Probably because they mostly got it right the first time.
With Gen 4 they hit the nail on the head regarding online play minus a few things, but decided to take that away from Gen 5 for some reason.
Who are they Hullis, I must know your holy trinity to see how it matches up with mine.
Yuri from Tales of Vesperia, Stocke from Radiant Historia, and Ike from Breath of Fire.
Personally, I'd swap out Ike for Zidane from FFIX, partly because I really like Zidane and partly because I haven't played a Breath of Fire that had Ike in it.
I mean, what else would you call the battle system it uses?

As someone who used to ADORE Final Fantasy, what has ultimately killed my interest is that they've changed too much.
Out of the mainline series, the last one to really grab me was FFX. It's no coincidence that the ones after left the traditional turn-based, menu-based combat behind. I want heroes on one side, enemies on the other, old school Final Fantasy. I don't want this fancy automated shit, or MMOs, or whatever. The core of what made the series tick for me has been ripped out.
Meanwhile Atlus makes games with the combat I like and writes better stories to boot.

Posts
It's worth noting I'm actually a little excited to have this
But I would not call it a game
I would posit the theory that castlevania: lords of shadow is pretty much not a Japanese game at all
now come on
there's a limit to how much you can say "Japan doesn't produce anything good except for the stuff they do"
if you get to handwave fighting games and Nintendo then the masterpiece that is Lords of Shadow must stay
I'll let you know when I can actually play it.
I'm sorry would you like me to refine my statement to 'games that are designed the way Japan designs games are dead'
or fighting games and Nintendo, for that matter?
I will be first to agree that Japanese game design as a general philosophy is outdated and tired, but those games kicked ass

like, 3 of them
holy trinity
just another pretender to the throne, as far as I'm concerned
Also Pokemon pretty much exemplifies a stagnant Japanese series.
Fightin' words
Turn-Based Strategy game, most likely.
I mean, what else would you call the battle system it uses?
Alright yeah, thinking about the whole leveling a party thing again, I guess I can see that.
It came out during this gen, though. It's only a few years old.
And another quality Shin Megami Tensei game literally just came out.

Awesome! I have a bet with Totilo that my site will give him an erection
Edcrab, do you have Ryu from Ninja Gaiden in there? Because he deserves to be.
