How old are the kids? How is she now - is she still mostly herself? Is she conscious?
I wasn't much more than ten when I saw one of my granddads not long before he died, and to be honest it didn't really help me much. He wasn't really there anyway, and it was mostly just sitting there, being sort of confused about what was going on my parents and the other grownup's heads, and sort of wishing I could be alone to sort my thoughts about it out.
She's conscious, just with a bunch of tubes sticking out of her. She has cancer, so she won't lose her faculties.
Her kids, one is 5 and the other is 9 or so. So I don't know. I mean, they love their mom.

sometimes those browser / facebook style games are fun in a nostalgic way because they really are just slightly-modernized (sometimes very slightly) versions of BBS door games like BRE (for "strategy" ones) or LoRD / Usurper (for "rpg" ones).
Except for the facebook game Dungeons and Dragons: Heroes of Neverwinter.
That actually has a simple but reasonably satisfying SRPG at its core (as opposed to no game at all for every other facebook "game").
In this browser MMO there is now a "world raid" - which is a single boss erryone fights
there are over three thousand players figthing it and the top player has done 4.7 billion HP in damage
I've done 300k over two days

I can't think of something more boring than a boss fight that takes days and hundreds of thousands of players.
I imagine it shares the the breath taking fun of punching a brick wall for half a week.
I log in, do my clicking, then log out
I spend energy on missions and stamina on bosses
the missions progress and the writing there is amateurish but fun and the pictures are pretty so I keep going, and the boss fights lets me level up which instantly recharges everything which lets me get further in the missions.

Then it turned out that someone was hogging up the one phone line they had so the cashier had to kick his coworker off the phone so the debit card transaction could proceed. I felt really bad after that.

i guess i'm not sure how much i should pay attention to morale/freshness
every time my dudes got super tired i'd try to back them up and give them a break while committing other troops, plus move my general near them
but i feel like the time it took them to strategically retreat just had the french dicks hacking at my back
I tried Shogun 2 and just could not wrap my head around the battles. It's like the first two tutorial battles are super easy, then they give you ninjas and shit and I'm just totally lost.
