If you missed out on picking up a Benign Kingdom art book of mine during the kickstarter run, I just got my share of my own books and put them on for sale at Topatoco! Also I got a small small number of the hardcovers that I am also selling there. BOTH come with free drawings from me. The hardcover comes with a cool free color drawing on a separate piece of paper and the regular book of me only comes with a free signature and drawing right in the book, if you want one. I only have like 10 or so of the hardcover for myself, so if you want one from me, JUMP ON IT.
It just makes me sad when I see an artist's work, and it's good work, but it's the only thing they paint. They stay firmly in their comfort zone, and the comfort zone is where art turns into a craft - something to be produced and reproduced with unerring similitude.
question: what if i refactored what i do in a year into a kickstarter? let’s say that i release 4 books and 4 shirts in a year typically and i make $50,000 doing so. rather than just chug along and release those 4 as i normally would, i’d reformat my fiscal year into a kickstarter with accompanying goals:
if i get to $10k i can fund 1 book.
if i get to $25k i can fund 2 books and the quality will be better. i can also make a shirt to give to the mid-to-high tier backers.
if i get to $40k i can fund 4 very nice books and 3 shirts. depending on your tier level you will receive most/all of these things, videos, etc etc.
if i get to $60k i can fund 4 books, 4 shirts. more videos, more blogs, and upper-level enticements for high-tier backers (naturally)
then of course you backload the milestones beyond that, to see if you can get to $80k, $100k and so forth
the effect would be the same as whatever you’d make in a year — you’re of course still beholden to manufacture/ship those goods and meet those promises, but this time, your audience and you have a blood pact, and you surge off that excitement and supportive movement
a paying job is a paying job.
didnt bachan said once that being an artist is like being a mercenary
Yeah. I see art for hire as mercenary as well. If you don't believe in the person paying your checks, you use that money to live your life how you want, which would probably be disagreeable to them, and hence at least in passive effort against them. Artists are a dime a dozen -- he'd just get someone else, so you may as well be the one taking his money.
I saw that when it went up, read it, and just...I dunno. We've all got our opinions and he knew the guy, at least. But damn, I still despise his art to no end and especially hate his use of the damn 'painter of light' title when there are much better artists that it sits with instead. Grar, I will say no more lest I rant.
And as for the art on Gutters? It's great, as I'd expect from Bachan. Don't judge anyone for doing the work to actually pay the bills. I don't even really blame the people working on Before Watchmen. I don't like it, but you gotta put food on the table somehow and that job sure will pay.
Until you've fainted from starvation because you're trying to spread out your cheap food budget to the limits, you shouldn't look down on an artist for doing a paid gig even if it's a pornographic LICD strip to be featured in a neonazi pamphlet. I did that job once. They paid me with an awesome face tattoo that says "SNITCH".
a paying job is a paying job.

He's a weirdo so he totes deserves to get fucked over
Yep! He's clearly just some crazy asshole who's only desire is to keep us from getting stories and entertainment! He hates all of us, obviously!
Well, I mean, Moore can come off as kind of a dick in interviews. Like the one time he basically said that there weren't any comics in the last decade worth reading.
But his anger over how Watchmen has been treated is understandable.
If even the well-mannered fans are balking at the idea of the prequels, the emotions going through Moore must not be pleasant.
In short: Gutters retreads a tired, old joke, and doesn't even do so for a decent reason.

Hey webbomics thread, I am making a small comic for class that I will be putting on the web and I was wondering if I should post it page-by-page or wait and put all of it up at once. It'll be 8-9 pages in total.

Hating and explaining one's hate for his art was a well honed pastime in the art department when I was in college.

yeah, I think this dude could be drawing something brilliant for Image or something
instead he's drawing Ryan Sohmer shitting on Alan Moore for no reason
I thought Brad Guigar colored his own comic. I can't find any other names on the Evil Inc website
