tons of secondary/tertiary characters on supernatural survive/don't turn evil
the problem is that literally the first black male character who lives past the cold open is portrayed as an unrepentant, unsympathetic sociopath who menaces a beautiful white woman with a big fucking OJ knife
I just took it for what it was, a play on Blade that made him human, but more of a monster

Ha ha, what?
Practically every secondary character from the first two season, besides Bobby, is dead by the fifth.
Humor can be dissected as a frog can, but dies in the process.

Also, reverse racism is still racism, Skull Man.

Ash deserved better than an offscreen death at the season 2 finale.

I would straight up kill a man for desmond pfeiffer dvds though
the first episode was about abe lincoln being addicted to telegraph sex!

You are implying that Supernatural had to have its first black character be as pure as the driven snow.
Which is just.
No.
No, he wasn't. He was implying the first black character be nuanced and sensitive to racial stereotyping!

Who cares? It's a show. Probably written by white guys who don't even think of the shit you guys are thinking of. They probably just decided to make certain characters black or asian or NOT WHITE not thinking that somewhere people were going to over analyze the shit out of it.

It's not a problem unless people choose to make it a problem. It's a fucking TV show. Seriously. If you guys want to discuss racism in TV then make a thread. I would vastly prefer if it not ruin this thread which has been highly enjoyable so far.

ive been really nice because i like you a lot but please dont act as if discussing racism or sexism in tv is somehow some crime against your computer monitor or that being uncomfortable about something that directly shits on me is somehow MY fault
every day i have to deal with anyone like me being some sockmonkey for white people to dance around and im supposed to shut up because it doesnt affect you?
i wasnt even planning on arguing because 'wow this cw show is amazingly white and insensitive' didnt seem like something that would be argued against, let alone that i shouldnt have dared to care about what a show that i like a lot thinks about people like me
Do you know what I do when someone talks about something I don't want to talk about? I scroll to the bottom and talk about something I want to talk about.
no it's still a problem, your inability to recognize it is an element of your white privilege but that doesn't make it not a problem
I really enjoy this show but the portrayal of race is pretty damn problematic
They wasted a perfect opportunity to add a minority cast member when Bobby died, too. He was a good character but we need someone new. To bad Rufus is dead, he'd have been a good replacement IMO.

The show has had its share of people in it all the same. Mortal or otherwise. Some of which are recurring characters!
Azazel, Lucifer, Crowley, All Four Horsemen, The Vast Majority of Demons and Angels: White people = Totally fine.
Crazy ass hunter: Black guy = RACISM
You missed the point pretty hard. The proportion of black people who are bad/good/nuanced vs. the proportion of white people who are bad/good/nuanced is incredibly unequal to the point that it is problematic.
I just started watching this show again after a little hiatus since I didn't like 6 much after the first few episodes, it does pick up and I'm glad I've gone back to watch it. I'm really liking season 7 so far though, it feels a lot more like the first couple of seasons which is a nice change of pace to be perfectly honest.
Shasta mcnasty and homeboys from outer space were the best shows. Also the wayans bros. show still holds up. Eff the haters
Shasta Mcnasty was a great show. I think it's very possible that I'm the only person in the UK who ever watched it though, since nobody knows what the hell I'm talking about whenever I bring it up.
Everyone is different. Everyone is special.

I just would love to see one thread in this place not dissolve into a discussion on politics or racism or sexism or prejudice. I'm not saying it doesn't exist, I'm not saying it can't be talked about, but it would be nice if this thread, which was a lot of fun, did not have to turn into a pile of arguments being slung back and forth and could just remain fun.
You guys are free to talk about whatever you want here, I'm just asking that you not kill a fun thread with it. I didn't tell you that you couldn't or say that any of the discussion was wrong so don't fucking attack me over it.
And if the thread continues down that path then fine. I just won't talk about the show on here anymore because I'm not interested in discussing the politics of it.
