I just remembered something wierd that happened yesterday. I was in a fleet Defense mission where we had to escort freights that were under attack to the starbase so they could drop off supplies. In this mission there was a player Odyssey named U.S.S. Enterprise. Straight up spelled the correct way and everything. I did not get close enough to check the registry. Did they take out the name blocking thing for offical ships?

There's apparently ways to trick it using spaces. Registry number you still can't get, but 901701 is the usual go-to for a fake Enterprise.

For the gearing up question: Do a look through the mission replays. Lots of mk XI blues around there once you're VA. Other than that, STFs are still the go-to. Use rare borg salvage for weapons, encrypted data chips for a set (Borg deflector/engine and MACO shield is still pretty common, add in the Borg console from replaying Assimilation). My advice is to stick to space STFs - ground is only necessary for mk XII ground set pieces, and ground normal PUGs are worse than space elite ones.

Dittoing this. You can even get started with gear by playing through the episodic content as there is a full (decent) space set from the Breen front, as well as a full, good (At least in my opinion) Space and Ground set to be had from The 2800, providing you don't mind running the same mission a couple of times to get both rewards. With those or a combination of parts you should be able to hold your own for in STFs for sure.

Weapons are a little more tricky to come by. I spent a fair lot of Dilithium on beam arrays when I hit 50, looking back I probably would have been better off just saving up the Rare Borg salvage drops from STFs. Incidentally, if you do end up with more of those than you can use, hang on to them as they are a really, really quick way to bring a new ship up to snuff if you decide you fancy a change.

Interesting dev post from Borticus: They're adding a reverse doff compactor. 1 of a set quality for 3 of the next lower quality.

Ostensibly to help with starbase doff inputs, but I'm looking at it more as a way to churn up some extra recruitment CXP. Tier 4 everything except trade (99k and getting tons of fails) and recruitment (about 5k away from tier 2 yet).

I've only recently started doing dedicated doff stuff so all my sections are tier 2 with a few almost to 3. Except Diplomacy I'm tier four on that since I did it the hard way by grinding diplo missions way back.

    So, I logged in today...

And like a furry rodent coming out of it's hole, I was overwhelmed and scared. I no longer know how to play my lvl 50 Engineer and I've got so many rewards and bridge officers wanting a piece of my deck.

So I rolled a Tac fed officer. I like the redone introduction and how cinematic everything is now. Also, ground combat is awesome (heard about the change, never got to try it out).

Think I still need to ease back into this again. Though I do like the scheduled live events like "lecturing" at the Academy.

Ever since S6 went live I've been annoyed that enemy fighters are hard to target and my own fighters are hard to count. I finally figured out what happened, and am putting the fix here:

Under Options>HUD, where it lists Enemy NPC and Friendly NPC options, they added a new "Fighters and Mines" sub-option. Set name and reticule for fighters and mines to "Always" to get back pre-S6 behavior, or leave name as Targeted and set reticule to Always to get a much less cluttered look that still lets you track fighters and mines.

Thanks for the info. Playing the new fleet missions the other day was annoying as crap because I had no idea how many fighters I had out in all the chaos so I was essentially hitting the button anytime it was off cooldown and I could spare a second from staying alive.

I'll second that thank you. Of course, as soon as I changed the setting I went into a fleet action with 2 atrox carriers and a tactical carrier. I'm pretty sure there were some klingons somewhere in the area, but they were hidden by all the fighters. :)

Turning off the names and just showing the reticules helps with the clutter. You can usually still see bigger ships behind it. Against Orion though, fleet defense is a big swarm of little tiny things zipping around.

I played a mission where I was in my Soverign and the other four players were Atrox. The initial engagement was pretty awesome to look at as I flew straight at the enemy totally surrounded by fighter craft of all types.

We got about 7 hours till we finish tier 1 of the shipyards. Also we need to really check the requirements of the jobs. The current engi one needs plans for a heavy phaser turret platform. Each plan makes twenty platforms through the engineer inside the ship and we need forty. However the plans are only obtainable through a rare doff espionage mission found in the three cardassian sector blocks.

Ok, so the last thing I did on my Adm was the Remus episode (with crewman reward).

What can I do to help the fleet?

Any of the new events that give fleet marks, since fleet marks are usually the limiting factor (unless there's a project with a weird ass input like 6 common ferengi chefs or 40 heavy phaser satellite turrets). Click the fleet button (last one before the down arrow below the minimap), click the Holdings tabs, and look at the open projects. Each one will have 4-6 inputs, anything you see there is something you can donate. And they take literally everything as you go through the system - consumables, doffs, shuttles (in the form of the cheap EC hangar bay items), almost every type of currency, boff experience, weapons, data samples, apparently at higher tiers even bridge officer candidates.

easy to do and get, sell on average for 50-200k for the plans, and you can build them at any time on your ship from the engi doff
put 20 in, building another 20 atm.

I've (probably) got this covered... i've been collecting those for awhile now.

edit: or it looks like Shapeshifter has got it!

Man i really wish they would've released the info about white/green doffs being used in starbases... about two weeks before that info started coming out i converted like 150+ white/green doffs into blues/purples.

    New Lockbox info's up.
The Tholian Lock Box represents a culmination of our ever-growing understanding of the Lock Box mechanics place in a Free-to-Play MMORPG, as well as an attempt to address much of the feedback that has been received since our first Lock Box went live in the Holiday season of 2011. Along the way, we’ve learned valuable lessons that have driven us to continually re-examine how we can deliver an enjoyable and rewarding experience to our players.

What that really comes down to is fairly simple: The prize must be worth the investment. For the price of 125 Zen, players opening a Lock Box must feel like they received an exciting and worthwhile reward.

One of the biggest ways in which we’ve learned to address this is by speaking to the one prize that nearly all of our players covet the most highly: More ships! The Tholian Lock Box not only offers the sleek and stylish Tholian Orb Weaver as its rare grand prize, but players that are not fortunate enough to receive it still have a chance at receiving an impressive Mirror Universe ship variant. These unique Star Cruiser (Fed), Assault Cruiser (Fed) and Vor’cha Battle Cruiser (KDF) variants will offer different bridge officer slotting and console slotting than their “Prime Universe” counterparts, as well as offering unique visuals not otherwise available for player ships. And on top of that, the odds of receiving these Mirror Universe starships are far higher than any lockbox ship odds have ever been before!

We’re also packing two of the most highly sought-after Cross-Faction Consoles into this box, by offering Federation players the chance to get the Subspace Jump console while Klingon Empire players can finally obtain a Point Defense System of their own

In keeping with the theme of Tholians, and building upon our past tradition of offering very rare, handcrafted Duty Officers in our Lock Boxes, there will be a chance to gain one of six unique Warfare Specialist Duty Officers, all of whom are members of the Tholian species willingly serving aboard Federation and KDF starships in defiance of the Tholian Assembly. Each Warfare Specialist will improve a player’s damage bonus when fighting a specific enemy, either in Space or on the Ground. While only one of these can be slotted at a time, keeping them all in your roster may prove invaluable now that a wide array of antagonists will soon be assaulting Player Starbases on a regular basis.

And how about those Starbases? Ever feel like your contributions to Fleet Projects could be rewarded at a slightly higher rate? The Tholian Lock Box can include an all new Fleet Credit Boost item that will improve your Fleet Credit earnings by 20% until they have depleted their bonus pools. There will be both a 25,000 and a 5,000 pool offered, so save up your Fleet Marks to get the most out of contributing to the advancement of your Starbase.

In the interest of assisting players with defending their Starbases, as well as driving back their enemies in other conflicts across the galaxy, the Tholian Lock Box is coming fully stocked with Very Rare quality (Purple) weaponry that is likely to improve the arsenal of most Captains, their ships and their crew. This new Phased Tetryon Weaponry is available in nearly all variants of both Space and Ground weaponry, and combines the effects of both Phaser and Tetryon energy types into a single lethal package, in addition to their basic bonuses. And again, in the interest of ensuring that our players feel rewarded, Vice Admirals and Lieutenant Generals will have a chance at receiving Mk XII weaponry when opening a Phased Tetryon Weapon pack.

Tholian Lock Boxes will also contain a chance at getting your hands on the Gamma Quadrant Duty Officers that were recently retired from our store. The mini-packs contained in this box will offer the fully range of species, specializations and trait variants that were previously available. A Standard Duty Officer Mini-Pack will also be offered as a low-tier prize in the Tholian Lock Box. Both of these packs contain four (4) Duty Officers: Two green-or-better, and two white-or-better.

And lastly, we come to Lobi Crystals. Our intention with the Lobi Crystal Store has always been to offer players a second chance at receiving a worthwhile prize from their Lock Box purchases. Didn’t get the ship you were after? Well, at least you’ve got enough Lobi Crystals from your investment to get yourself a nice item or two from the nearby vendor.

Rewarding players for their investment on the Lobi Store obviously means offering better items on this store. A few examples of this are a Tholian Crystalline Sword that can absorb incoming energy in order to deal extra damage, a new Tholian Silk Scarf (wearable by both factions), a selection of Arachnid Vanity Pets, a flyable Tholian Widow Fighter, and even a beastly Tholian Recluse Carrier that players will have the opportunity to fly into battle.

For the more casual Lobi consumer, we’ve also added several low-cost consumable items for as little as ONE (1) Lobi Crystal apiece. Among these low-cost consumables are a number of Tholian-inspired items, including Radiation Resistance Hypos to reduce the damage taken by Tholian ground weaponry and Acoustic Amplication Circuits that will allow any ranged weapon to deal a small amount of Sonic Damage for a short amount of time. Several other personal and team-based consumables are available, and each can be purchased in bulk for your convenience.

But we didn’t stop at just making great new rewards available for purchase! In order to allow players the opportunity to more easily obtain worthwhile prizes from the Lobi Crystal Store, we’ve doubled the low-tier Lobi Crystal prize. Every Tholian Chance Box will contain a minimum of FOUR Lobi Crystal. When you combine that increase in rewards with the low-price consumables mentioned above, the average purchasing power gained by opening a Tholian Lock Box has significantly increased.

So it seems like keys are still in play (at 125 Zen) but the prizes are more worthwhile.

Edit: Beat to it. My list is more concise:P

New lockbox. Who didn't see this coming when they announced the end of the Ferengi boxes? Anyway... on the one hand, this one seems to be a much better value than the past ones, but still a lockbox. Anyway (ship stats not released yet):
    Top prize: Tholian Orb Weaver
Second level (more common than any previous lockbox ship, but probably no-frills):
    Terran Empire Assault Cruiser
    Terran Empire Star Cruiser
Klingon Alliance Vor'cha Battle Cruiser (i.e. mirror Klingon)
    Junk level:
Cross-faction console: Subspace Jump for fed and phaser point defense for KDF
A set of Tholian warfare specialist doffs (give a damage bonus space and ground against a specific race)
    Fleet Credit boost
Phased Tetryon weapons, supposedly guaranteed purple quality
    Gamma Quadrant doff packs
Standard doff mini-packs (2 white or better, 2 green or better)
    And new Lobi stuff:
    Tholian Recluse carrier
    Tholian Widow shuttle
Tholian sword that absorbs energy damage to deal extra damage (like nanopulse weapons)
    Tholian silk scarf costume piece
    Crystal spider pets
    Anti-tholian defensive and offensive consumables
Supposedly higher Lobi payouts from boxes, too, minimum of 4 and a higher maximum than last time.

In about a half-hour or so, we can start building the first tier of our Starbase and Shipyard. This is what we'll need according to STO-Wiki.
    STO-Wiki wrote:
-Upgrading starbase from Tier 0 to Tier 1 is 1080 Fleet Marks, 64800 Refined Dilithium, 48 non-civilian duty officers, 825 Industrial Energy Cells, 400 Self Sealing Stem Bolts, 25 Particle Traces.
-Upgrading from Tier 0 to Tier 1 shipyard (Military) is 540 Fleet Marks, 10500 Refined Dilithium, 5 tactical or security duty officers [white quality], 300 Industrial Replicators, 905 Shield Generators, 150 Self Sealing Stem Bolts.

the Tholian Widow shuttle, is actually listed as a Tholian Widow fighter, it's 70 meters long, so there's a chance its more of a full size like ship and not a shuttle (a runabout for example is 23 meters long)

also, no more Gold lock boxes, they are killing the mystery boxes as well. Lock boxes will not be green either, all of them are going to be White/common.

They are removing all the ferengi lobi store items, and then putting in the tholian stuff.

In the game, fighter means shuttle-with-cannons (Peregrine, Stalker, To'duj), or light carrier pet. The NPC version is a light ship launched from the Recluse and Tarantula, Orb Weaver is their frigate class.

The sizes they listed in that chart Jamjamz put out seem way off. The Recluse is shorter than my Armitage, but the size they list is just over the Sovereign's total length.

So... I kinda like the slower overal pace of the game. Also, did they changed the exploration rewards? I noticed the first reward was dilithium instead of the old 1st expeditionary fleet commendations of old.

(for reference to anyone curious, I had old mail in my inbox dated 3/22/11. And that was for stuff I posted on the exchange do I stopped playing before that).

It would have sucked if they just made it so you would only get white tholian boxes out of them.

Dilithium is the new emblem. It's the same currency at all levels, instead of two separate ones per rank (one PVE one PVP) like the old system. It can also be traded for C-store credit in the dilithium exchange.

My admerial had something to contribute (a trader doff) but for some reason it never went through. Just said "exchanging trader" or something and then......nothing. Sat there for a full 2 minutes waiting for something, window never closed unless I canceled the trade.

Also, just remembered my favorite part of the game: naming the ships and giving them back stories and nick names similar to current navy ships.

Like my first ever one, the USS Coronado (named after my first official duty station, NAS North Island) nick named "Little Blue" for Coronado Island's bridge.

I went with shield names and shield bearers for my engineer career (given their role as tanks) namely the Hoplite, Athena and Aegis

For my scientist, I'm gonna go with Alan Turing (Codebreaker), Stephen Hawking (ship motto: "My mind is free."), Yuri Gagarin (Cosmonaut) and name the shuttle Laika.

Sometimes with doffs it just won't take certain ones. If it doesn't go through right away, it usually won't. Nobody's quite sure why, but it's usually specific doffs - if you have more with the same name it won't take those, and if you trade them to somebody else it won't take it from them, either. Might be something to do with the way rarity's actually handled in the system. There's three rarity factors with doffs - color/quality, rank, and rarity. Rank is semi-tied to quality but not always consistently, but rarity and quality are different things.

    Picking ship names is fun.
My Tac pilots science vessels named after the noble gases.
I've got a science captain who names her escorts after famous scientists.
My main is a Borg engineer/cruiser who named all her ships after characters from Alice in Wonderland. Her name? 10/6, though as a nickname she goes by "Hatter". Nothing like flying around in the Type 8 shuttle named Tweedle Dum, then hopping into the assault cruiser Jabberwock.
Then there's my science/science who named all his ships the Quid-Pro-Quo (letter). The mirror universe costumes were a great investment...

I've got a low level Gorn who's naming his ships from the Cthulhu mythos, but I rarely spend much time red side.

Who wants some stats for Tholian Lockbox-related ships?

    Tholian Orb Weaver
The Tholian Orb Weaver is essentially a very large, advanced Science Vessel. Bridge Officer stations favor science, although there is a Lieutenant Commander Universal Bridge Officer station. As a Science Vessel, it is capable of Subsystem Targeting as well as Sensor Analysis. The Orb Weaver, of course, comes with a Tholian Web Generator console. This console allows you to create an energy web around your target, capturing and eventually crushing them. The Tholian Web Generator can be equipped in any console slot, but only on the Tholian Orb Weaver or the Tholian Recluse Carrier.

The Tholian Orb Weaver also comes with a Thermionic Torpedo Launcher. Thermionic Torpedoes are capable of draining the target's Weapon and Engine Subsystems with each hit, reducing its damage output and speed temporarily.

Minimum Rank: Rear Admiral (Fed) or Brigadier General (KDF)
    Hull Strength: 30,000
    Shield Modifier: 1.4
    Crew: 1200
    Weapons: 3 Fore, 3 Aft
    Device Slots: 3
Bridge Officer Stations: 1 Universal Lieutenant Commander, 1 Ensign Tactical, 1 Lieutenant Commander Engineering, 1 Ensign Science, 1 Commander Science
Console Modifications: 3 Tactical, 3 Engineering, 4 Science
Base Turn Rate: 9 degrees per second
    Impulse Modifier: 0.18
    Subsystem Targeting
    Sensor Analysis
    +15 Auxiliary Power
Console - Universal - Tholian Web Generator
    Thermionic Torpedo Launcher

    Tholian Recluse Carrier
The Tholian Recluse Carrier comes standard with 2 hangar bays of Tholian Widow Fighters. Widow fighters are armed with Tetryon Beams and Quantum Torpedoes. The Widows are also designed to work with the Recluse's Tetryon Grid Console. This console creates a grid of Tetryon Energy that buffs ally energy damage and causes your Tholian Widow Fighters to reflect 2 Tetryon beam attacks at nearby enemy targets. Tholian Widow Fighters and the Tetryon Grid Console may only be equipped on the Tholian Recluse Carrier. The console may be placed in any console slot.

The Tholian Recluse Carrier comes with a Thermionic Torpedo Launcher. Thermionic Torpedoes are capable of draining the target's Weapon and Engine Subsystems with each hit, reducing its damage output and speed temporarily. The Recluse Carrier may be equipped with a Tholian Web Generator Console if you obtain one.

EDIT: So if I saw the Fed Fleet Base's Holding window right, it looks like we can make at the moment seven ships at the Shipyard and then later five more once we get the Ship Provision project started. It might be best then to check if anyone wants one of the T1 Shipyard ships here so we don't have any surprises down the road. Out of the current selection we can make, there's only two that can be purchased without the ship-module from the cash shop/AH: the Heavy Cruiser and the Research Science Vessel. The others that sport the Fleet tag in front of them require four ship-modules as well as a Provision slip.

When you get the DoFF not going through on a Starbase mission I think it's due to that officer being on an active DoFF mission at that time.

Oh and I bought a Lv 1Tier Heavy Cruiser as the 4 nacelle model was by far my favourite levelling up in the game. It looks so sleek and fast for a cruiser even though it has brick like handling!

The two mirror universe ships are cruisers but the tholian grand prize is a science ship for a change of pace

Interesting bridge layouts in the two big Tholian ships - CM/LTCx2/ENx2. Not as good as the standard carrier setup (CM/LTCx2/LT), but they seem to be actually diversifying ships more than just rotating the LTC and EN slots.

The Mirror fed cruisers are just the Fed versions with their skins switched, nothing really new there, but the Vor'cha is a star cruiser with the Vor'cha's turn rate. That one will probably be popular on both sides, we don't really have anything like that.

The Widow isn't as interesting as the Nafar was. At least the Nafar had a cool power you could put on other shuttles, the Thermionic torpedoes aren't that interesting.

Re: ship names, one thing that kind of bugged me on the shows was that all of the Starfleet ships had Earth names, with maybe a rare "T'Pau" or similar Vulcan name. I don't see why there wouldn't be names of famous explorers, historical figures, traditional ship names, etc. from the other Federation member species (although I can understand the practical reason, since these were tv shows written by real human writers).

To help me remember what's what between my alts, I go with astronomical and abstract names for science ships (Constellation, Discovery, Curiosity), escorts (only 1 per character) are all named Kumari after Shran's ship from Enterprise, and the Ferengi Marauder is the 111th Rule (of Acquisition).

I wish I could contribute to the starbase right now, but the hotel internet doesn't allow it. I would give fleet marks so hard.

DS9 sort of answered this, and wrapped in a canon reason why 90% of most crews appeared to be human. Starfleet was actually pretty segregated until after the Dominion War. Most ships were 80%+ one species (sometimes up to 100% like that Vulcan ship that the DS9 guys played baseball with), and usually named in that species language. Presumably fleet groups and inter ship missions were arranged with this in mind, too, because with a few exceptions all encounters between the mostly-human title ships were with mostly- or all-human guest ships.

The Titan books put an end to that - the Titan was the test ship for a more integrated Starfleet, it even had a significant nonhumanoid crew and not just species that pretty much looked human. STO seems to follow from the Titan line minus Destiny, and ships now are pretty diverse. I think I counted it up once and I have 36 species serving on my main's ship.

So I stopped playing just before season 5 began and I decided to see whats new. I tried the 2nd wave mission 4 times and it never registered as being completed so couldn't carry on with the story. Then I tried one of the new fleet actions where you defend a starbase from waves of klingons and failed that because we didn't destroy them in time. Then I had a look at the Fleet starbase and spent ages trying to remember how to see how well I doing when it comes to gearing up STF equipment turns out Im not doing well I think.
Then the server came down for maintenance. Luckily because I have no clue what I should be doing anymore!
Also Lockboxes, whats up with them I thought they were only at the christmas event.
