Yeah, you're right. I had in my head that his ears would be sticking out far enough from the sides of his head to be visible but it doesn't really make sense with the angle we're seeing him from.

Any chance you can give a step by step on how you color like that? Is it Flats>Gradients>Select tool>Shadows>select tool>highlights?

Once I've got the flat shading done, I select some areas and add a gradient to add a little depth.
I kind of want to do Sandman and Kraven just so that I have one of the actual Sinister Six lineups.
