I really was expecting them to say PAX UK, and I'm afraid this is one more step away from that possibility. But, I'm odd in that my husband's British and half my company is located in the UK so I have to go over there all the time anyway. Not typical! God wouldn't it be nice to go to England and have FUN for once instead of having to spend time with my insufferable mother in law.
Anyway, it should be called PAX Down Under. Tag line: "You call that a convention? THIS is a convention."
Well done sir... From this moment on PAXstralia is now PAX Gold (if only within the confines of my brain).

I'm not much of a forum poster, but just posting to say I'm thrilled with the news that PAX is coming to our fair shores.
As a serial convention volunteer in the past turned volunteer photographer, I'd be happy to put my hand up to help out if it's on the east coast - where should I be watching for volunteer calls?

I'm sure if\when a volenteer call goes out for PAX AU it will show up here. Also likely on the main PA site and paxsite. Start looking probably 2-3 months pre-show, whenever that is.

Which is to say that I may be tempted as well....

A big thumbs up from another Aussie - this is going to be awesome!
While Sydney may look like the most obvious choice due to population, I really enjoyed Brisbane as a location for both of the GenCon OZ conventions that I attended (and I don't think that convention failed due to lack of attendees, the official story was the GFC killed off all the stallholders). Domestic flights are cheap in Australia (the 800 odd mile trip from Sydney to Brisbane costs me under $100) so the domestic fans will come, and Queensland is probably more attractive to the overseas market.
...or feel free to have PAX OZ in sunny Wollongong, it will save me the trip :-)
I wonder how the volunteer traditions will change for Australia? Enforcers? Cookie (Biscuit) Brigade? TWDT?
I'm intending to volunteer as an Enforcer the moments its available - as much as it would be great just to attend, I want to see PAX AU be the most awesome thing possible, and for that it will need Enforcers.
I fully expect there to be a stall dedicated to making Vegemite toast all weekend. Just for all the overseas visitors to try it. I'd probably have a hard time leaving to do anything else.
@Berym Sydney has *terrible* public transport compared to both Brisbane and Melbourne and its twice the price. Also @Yug is part of the Mana team...
We'll have to disagree there :P
I know Yug is part of the Mana team, it's why I said it
The public transport in Sydney is worse than in Melbourne, but that's mostly because Melbourne has fantastic public transport while Sydney has average. From my experience, Sydney and Brisbane are the same so long as you stay away from the Gold Coast line :P

I find Melbourne okay for day to day, but if you were going to move a lot of people (ala Convention) you'd run into congestion problems.
Sydney is fine for day to day, but has greater capacity to move large groups of people.
Also... if it is in Sydney, and at Darling Harbour, who's up for PAX Casino trips? >_>

Nice to meet a fellow Enforcer-to-be I think that once they've asked for volunteers and we know who has been accepted as an AU Enforcer, I'll put together a mailing list and arrange some social gatherings to get the team together and bond as a group, get to know one another, that kind of thing... providing I'm accepted as an Enforcer, of course :P

@Berym Have you ever posted in the AusPax thread in SE++? There's a lot of people there and we already do a good lot of meetups and such, and I know a solid chunk of them will likely be signing up for enforcing too.

W00t! Sounds great. xD Too bad I'm 4000km away on the other side of the continent. =(
Fly over, doesn't cost much Perth to Sydney.
Everything is relative (also standing with the chickens at the back of the plane for 5hrs is no picnic). No, it's the accomodation that's usually the killer. Finding a place to stash your gp between raids is always the trick

Huh, I hadn't seen that thread before, no.
It's mostly about a custom meet, from the looks of it, and not PAX AU
Yeah, it is, it's been going for quite a while though and we all know each other pretty well. But it's also a general thread for Australians to hang out and we organise meets in the various cities (well, never Sydney because those guys are terrible at organising things). I'd totally suggest dropping by and getting to know some of the folks there.
For people interested in being an Enforcer for PAX AU, I've put together an unofficial email group so we can keep in touch, plan social events and the like.
So! There's a PAX Australia in 2013, and one of the important things that will be needed are Enforcers, surely?
Regardless of where it is here in Australia, I'm going to stand up and volunteer to be an Enforcer; I want Australia's PAX to be a great experience, and for that we're going to need Enforcers.
Though I've never been able to get to PAX, I believe in what the Enforcers stand for, what they do.
A big part of the Enforcers, I understand, is the community that they're a part of; I've got a mailing list, if people are interested I'd like to get interested parties together so we can meet each other and plan some social events around PAX - make the Enforcer experience in Australia as rich as the one in the US.

Don't understand some of the negativity on laws though. Some unknowledgable folk commenting after reading a news story on GTAIV having the hookers taken out. "We had to remove hookers from the Aus version of GTAIV, I don't think we can exhibit at conventions there now"? It's irrelevant now with the new laws, and was borderline irrelevant even before as only rarely were games banned, and most of the time they were only the Postal games.
So, I think we Prime Locals all need to band together and fly out from SeaTac to have like a JoCoCrazy Cruise IN THE AIR. 18 hours of high altitude gaming yeah yeah?
I've heard the convention centre is being remodeled next year, so if PAXGold is in Syd it probably won't be in darling harbour. I reckon Carriageworks or the Entertainment Quarter at FOX might suit though.
I'm originally from Oz, so I'd love to go back, and PAX is as good a reason as any.
But, man.....14 and a half hours on a plane to go play video games? At a cost of like....20 grand? I dunno if that's gonna be in the cards for me. Thrilled to see the 3rd PAX make it there, though. What a great gaming community there is down there.

Hm, I thought it was the Entertainment Centre that was being remodelled.
All of the SE++ Aus Thread crew are going to sign up to enforce (especially when we were planning our second nationwide gathering next year, too). I will personally make sure of this, and we will help make sure PAX AU is just AMAZING.
Well more of you really must sign up to the mailing list I've put together I've had a few people sign up so far.
PAX XXXX for sure.
Given how well supernova and EBExpo go having a PAX here shouldn't be a problem and should be awesome. I'm gonna put my hand up to be an enforcer for sure.
My guess is either Melbourne or Sydney.
Melbourne because it seems to have been doing a lot more video gaming related events then anywhere else or Sydney just for international airport convenience.

See you at PAX Gold!
Instead of a PAX train, there may be a PAX cruise ship.
+1 for logo upside down, which in AU as you very well know would be right side up.
Yep, we'll be putting together a team of Enforcers for PAX AU, more information as we get closer to the show of course.

Clearly, the most important facet is Green for Oz, or Yellow for Gold (AU).
LOL, if the public transport can handle 100k people from AFL/Cricket at the MCG I think it will manage PAX.
I'm biased to Melbourne, here's hoping Scott and Kris put in a good word from their trip here.
I believe we have a casino too

Why? It's in Australia. That's like saying they shouldn't call it PAX East, but PAX Secondus or somesuch.
