There's quite a lot of cheating, every third game it seems there's an invincible person who occasionally shoots through walls to boot.

Given the nature of the unlocks and co-op gameplay it's kind of hard to get to worked up about it, does make me feel like I'm wasting my time though.

This is partly why I'm afraid of adventuring above silver that often. I really still haven't found builds I like that much and I don't even have all that kick ass weapons.

Weaklings, the lot of you. Especially Curly.

But seriously... I can't remember the last time I didn't play on Gold. Well, I can, but it was a while ago (testing out my first Volus). Guess I should finally promote some classes again and try out a few new builds. Having a stable of 20s that can level stuff on Gold is nice and can lead to some fast cash, but I also don't get much in the feeling of progression.

However, fuck Platinum. Don't get me wrong, I can do Platinum, I've done Platinum... but it's poop. Not "the" poop, just poop. A lot of classes simply hurt your team to bring along, and it's just boss spam non-stop. It can be an amusing novelty from time to time, but not much more. On Gold, it's a little more sane and I can bring any class I want and be effective with it. Maybe some builds shine more than others, but nothing is 100% unviable.

Silver exists because jumping into a Gold game below level 10 is a dick move more often than not, and it's a good place to test out new classes and guns without potentially screwing the pooch.

Bronze exists so dogs and other creatures without opposable thumbs can enjoy Mass Effect MP, and so people who are in incredibly lazy moods can easily solo weekend events without dealing with very minor social interaction.

What baffles me is when you jump into a bronze game on your freshly promoted class to get a couple of levels and there's a guy rocking a harrier X on a ghost with all level 3 consumables. That's surely just trolling yourself at that point?

Typically, if I see a guy rockin' a super silly gun on a solid class, I figure it's because they're trying to compensate for a lack of skill. Bronze is probably the only way that guy can get first, so long as he uses his Ghost and Harrier X.

But I can't count how many times I've seen a guy and gone "Wow, he's rocking an awesome gun and has a good class, this'll be easy!" only to spend the next 20 minutes scooping him, now in a distant fourth, off the ground.

Agreed. Once every player is competent the guy with the major kill class and rank X guns will probably top the scoreboard.

The guns how ever, do not make you immune to bullets and as a result I see quite a few people who've clearly got WAY better shit than me fall behind me.

Sometimes the matchmaking will put you into the lobby for the wrong tier. It's happened to me more than a few times. If you don't catch it you run for a loss.

As a person with rockin' guns and whatnot, sometimes... you really just don't care. Other times you carry the rockin' gun and a weaker one because you want to grind out the challenge for that gun and people will kick you if you're just rocking a shuriken on a Devastator or something like that.

I guess what I'm saying is, your kit/n7 rank/challenge points don't really speak to your skill at all.

I just started playing multiplayer on my PS3 last week. I really really like this!

I started out with a human soldier, no frills. Frag grenades can be fun. It is relatively easy to figure out where the enemies are going to spawn based on where the players are so usually I can get quite a few kills in the early waves on bronze/silver by spamming some grenades at the groups.

I'm currently toying around with brawler. My initial speccing was terrible. For some reason I didn't pick shield/barrier piercing on lash. Horrible decision.

I'm intimidated by the number of options there are for characters. I could play this for years and not try them all out!

I'm also intimidated by gold. I feel like my guns/gear isn't good enough to contribute. Or maybe I just don't know the intricacies of things like power combos well enough? Any suggestions there?

Last night I had a fun game where there was a Vorcha sentinel? solider? with flamer. We were on silver reaper, can't remember the name of the map (the foundry type one?). Between his flamer and my biotic charge there were lots of fire explosions happening! Then everyone died leaving me to deal with a banshee, a brute, and some miscellaneous reapers. I got them all dead except the banshee but I stupidly charged her and got gutted.

I could see running bronze to level up a char after a promotion. I went on a promoting streak last night, so I was playing my fury in bronze games, though I was running with a phalnax (sp?) and now an avenger just to get some gun points.

Loving the fury though, her biotic bombs are the biggity bomb.

You can survive silver on a freshly promoted character if you're knowledgeable about the class and have decent weapons. I don't usually drop to bronze unless I'm trying something really wacky.

    Like a volus vanguard.

Also, is there a better AR for a Ghost than the Harrier? I like it, works well, just not sure if there's something better. Given that my harrier's only IV, I did have some strange success with a ...uh...crap, forgot the name, the UR that's basically a sniper rifle in AR form. Hits like a truck out of cloak.

I don't know about better, but the Saber (the one you mentioned) and PPR are pretty good choices as well

  • Options

    Possibly the saber?

And I don't do silver pug as a lowbie because my silver runs as of late are hard enough with a leveled character, I'm not going in with an even bigger handicap. On top of that I'm trying to get the weapon cheevos (specifically pistol and AR) so I'm using off weapons for points, which is even harder on silver.

I got the argus this morning, that would seemingly work good on a destroyer, possibly a ghost if you are using it in cover, a bit heavy though.

Hm, I'll try a silver first next time I start a new character.

Something I just read online said to spend money on recruit packs at first until I max out all the guns at level 10 so that when I buy the more expensive packs I won't get any of the cheaper guns. Is that how it works? I'll never get a duplicate gun of the same level?

  • Options
    PreacherPreacher Registered User regular
Once a gun hits X rank you will not get that gun again. recruits or vet packs to max some early weapons are not a bad investment. Though I'd personally say buy a couple psp's so you can possibly get a fun new class or weapon, man can't live on avengers and katana's alone!

PSPs is all I have been buying. Buying recruit or vet packs makes more sense to me now. I might spam them for a bit to fill out the common weapons and classes.

The best weapons I've gotten so far I guess I'd say are the Geth Plasma SMG and the M-98 Widow. Arc pistol I guess is rare but I have yet to use it.

e: I think I got a carnifex last night as well.

at a minimum you should get at least ~65k on a gold clear? Average will likely be ~75k though.

Unless they changed the Arc its kind of crap, the widow is a good sniper because of its high damage and inherent pierce. Slap it on a human filtrator with cryo and you freeze enemies and cap them in the dome. And its pierce will go through enemies, you can get a nazi kill from time to time. But it does have a low ammo count and the reload between shots can be murder when things are up in your face.

    Most SMGS are crap.

Good to know the arc got better, I wonder if the charged shot thing would help that asari pistol as well. Nothing can replace the Paladin in my heart though, 3 shots deadly accurate even without a scope and stopping power like a mother f.

Sniper on a soldier doesn't work that well, outside of something like the Indra or raptor. Soldiers are a mobile class you want to have something that works in medium to up close. A good shotty or AR is your buddy there.

I liked the geth SMG because it was light and I could just spam the crap out of enemies with it, adrenaline rush, and/or concussive shot. Armored enemies were terrible though. Maybe it wasn't such a good gun afterall.

Honestly, all classes work better when you run 'em as mobile. Shoot and scoot, that's where it's at.

Definately on higher difficulties it makes you a better player if you stay mobile. Though there are times like when a group is turtling up that running a sniper build isn't terrible. Though turtles are generally awful in a pug, mainly because someone will inevitably run off and get downed and then someone goes after them and gets downed, etc etc.

Defensive tactics are mostly for when you're unfamiliar with your level of difficulty and/or feeling outgunned. Sticking in one spot with your team lets you concentrate fire and support one another. If you've got the collective DPS for it, it works alright. The golden rule, though, always, is to get the hell out the second you lose control of the area.

Do you guys do public matches or typically private ones with people you know? I find the level of .. ability/knowledge varies quite a bit in silver games. Maybe if I jump up into gold it will trend towards better groups. Not that I am a wizard at this yet.

You can probably make it work on lower difficulties (especially on a good weapons class like the human soldier), but it has all kinds of problems. Armored enemies is a big one; armor damage penalties are flat per-shot damage reductions, so high rate of fire/low damage weapons (and the GSMG is about as high-ROF/low damage as it gets) get hit hardest by it. It ends up just not doing enough damage to be a very good weapons-class weapon, but the necessity of waiting on a damage ramp-up means it isn't very good for power-user classes either.

I tend to pug it silver, at most I play with my wife from time to time, though I recently started back up and was quite surprsied about certain changes. Like rain being damn near fatal on ghost, apparently in the ME world the deadliest place in the world would be Seattle.

to be honest a lot of silver pubs are better than gold pubs

i think it's probably a dunning-kruger thing; a lot of players on silver recognizing or even underestimating how good they are and declining to move up, vs. a lot of questionable players jumping right on into gold
