i went to ao nang / krabi first which is near phuket but less built up and whatnot which is nice
here are some shots of the beach
this last one has no instagram filter on it at all, that is just how it looked
i did not have my phone with me when i did dives but here is a map of 2 real cool dives i did, ko bida nok and ko bida nai
i saw lots of cool fish, and eels, and sea turtle, and sea snake and etc
even nemos in their anemones
i also had thai redbull which i feel like they should have here
not carbonated so you can glug glug 2x caffeine
i climbed to the top of this mountain temple, part of a forest temple complex
this buddah was up there
it was 1,237 steps up (600m) and super hot and i was out of shape but it was awesome
we saw 0 other ppl on our way up or at the top
here is a cool island we saw another day
then we went up to chiang mai in the north
they have good coffee there too! from the hill tribes, which is cool, these shops good portion of money goes directly to them and they are p poor (which i will see later, as my friend works managing a social enterprise of organic egg farmin with the hill tribe ppl)

in this one the monks are building sandcastles cuz that is a thing that is done, sand gets taken all around during the year but is brought back to the temples for the new year

also much drinking that day
have no pics from first day but here are some from second day, we went to places with less foreigners than the first day and mostly thai ppl which was interesting difference (also less crazy drinking... those canadians we met were carrying around a beer bong it was way too bro-y)

after that we went up to Chiang Rai, where my friend lives, which is even further north, close to laos and myanmanr, and has way less tourists than Chiang Mai

this latter was real good, street food
pork larb and sticky rice
steamed veggies and green chili dipping sauce
this other thing that was basically spicy fat and was amazing i dont even know
some other things
then i took a cooking class!
we went to the market
dis more street food that i daringly ate but was fine (cooking class lady took us there she was the best - she spent a while travelling the world and teaching cooking and now lives 6 months in chiang rai where she is from and 6 months travelling the world teaching! awesome. also very proud of her lanna heritage - is interesting, many different cultures and ppl in thailand).
i learned to cook a few things like somtum
and tom yum goong
we went to the white temple then which is a crazy temple this modern thai artist made to help his community out and it was whacky, self funded too
and we got a photo with that guy he was just wandering around the grounds, most ppl not recognizing him despite random cardboard cutouts of him around

then we went to do more songkran festivities
here was p different than chiang mai, almost no tourists
so many people riding around in back of pickup trucks
oh but here is a photo from that morning, the more family oriented / religious side of songkran
got lucky to see it
and then got blessed by dose monks too!
also went to this other art thing, "black house / artist compound" which was like a weird modern art complex thing in the middle of nowhere and was cool
i got a durian popsicle it was yummy
we also got to have company picnic at the "beach" by the river with my friend and ppl from his company, which was cool
it was all locals, they had all these shaded platforms by the river, some of which went over the water, which you just sat on and people brought you amazing food (fish, somtum, cockles, whatever) and drank beer
and then ppl play in river

after some other setbacks we made it up to the mountains, where my friend works with the hill tribe pplz

which was totally weird but cool
basically we sat in guy's bamboo hut
made awesome food in something that was halfway between hotpot and korean bbq, super legit
drank shitty whiskey including some homemade whiskey that the old guy on the right made (tried to not have too much so as not to die)
they got super drunk, old guy who could not speak thai or english, only native dialect (he was of the karen hill tribe) was totally ridiculous
they had a ghetto karaoke setup which you can see, it was awesome, we sang random songs over janky beats (i did my heart will go on fyi, those ppl loved it)
then we slept there in that bamboo hut in the open air which was weird i was afraid something would bite my face off but it was cool
the mountains looked a lot less scary in the morning
these are some of the chickens at one of the farms that my friend helped start
the concept is these hill tribe ppl are poor, but they have land and stuff
so they give them these chickens for free and show them how to build hut etc, and raise them organically
and then they sell the eggs and give money from that to the ppl, and so they can make more money without having to uproot and change their whole lifestyles etc
here is a cute english style cafe we went to later that day which was totally needed
did nothing there
ate banoffee pie and coffee and rogue dead guy ale (!)
finally here are some pics from bangkok
this was our fancy lunch at this fancy place (yet it cost what like, ~$20 per person, despite being super fancy and awesome, even when i had a legit good cocktail with saffron in it!)
went to dinner at this restaurant high up with a long table with some italian fellow we met while diving the week before, he was diving with my friend
his german wife who i dove with couldn't make it but she works at a winery in thailand which is cool
there were many attractive ppl here
but what was hilarious is
so we were seated at one of those tables on the right but at the long table across from us was this one asian guy with a combover
and 2 ridiculous prostitute types on either side of him
just kind of there watching him eat or feeding him or occasionally nibbling something
one was constantly using her phone, the other more attentive one was wearing basically a bikini of sorts, it was preposterous
good view tho
bangkok is sprawling
