Is Yakuza 4 an open world game or a shooty mans driving game?
It's kind of neither. It's somewhat open, though not in the usual sense. And it's definitely not shooty mans driving at all.
It's simultaneously a twisty turny japanese crime drama and over the top brawler with some slight RPG elements, plus tons of goofy mini-games like karaoke, ping pong, arcade games like in Shenmue, etc. And it all takes place in painstakingly-detailed yet fictionalized recreations of real locations in modern day Japan.
It has more in common with Shenmue than anything else, really.
Apotheon looks pretty sweet(thank goodness)! Almost another disappointing month for me. I own Transistor(not really thrilled with it), my PS3 is in storage, and I own Rogue Legacy.
Kick and Fennick looks potentially rad too.

Watching some of that is making me think of Sleeping Dogs. For the low, low price of "free", I'll find out if that's right or not for myself.

AHA! My waiting has finally paid of! I was disapointed that Rogue Legacy never went on sale during the holiday. Now all is forgiven. Also, Transitor always puzzled me but not enough to actually pay for it, now I get to try it for free!
I would never recommend Battlefield 4. But that's just out of spite... I was one of the unfortunate souls who bought that broken garbage at launch. Maybe it's petty, but whatevs. Eff that game.
The benefit of buying it now is that they patched the game up quite a bit from launch. I don't like the "release it fucked up and then use the proceeds to pay for patches" model, but I am benefiting by getting a solid game really cheap today on the backs of those who paid full price to suffer through the bugs yesterday.

Someone on Gaf said that Yakuza was like Shenmue. Is this true?
Why have I never played a Yakuza if this is the case?!?!?
Scroll up a bit?
lol, completely missed you saying that.
I cannot believe I've never played these games!
I can. They sell like shit outside of Japan, which leads to this terrible cycle of "Well, it won't sell well, so we won't market it, so it doesn't sell well, so we won't market it..." I'm not fond of the clunky controls, myself, but they can be pretty fun.
I almost bit the bullet on Transistor countless times alone.
As for Yakuza, I have the first two games on PS2, and they were part of my listed backlog. I guess I'll have to step it up so I can play 4 sooner rather than later. Doesn't help I'll have to look into getting 3 while I'm at it.
But 4 comes with video recaps of 1, 2, and 3, if you want to move things along and trim that backlog. The video I posted and hardcore fans will tell you not to do that, but I dunno. I don't have that kind of time.
And 5 is supposed to be the best in the series so far. It's supposed to smooth out a bunch of the klunk that's been in all the games, and even removes the need to load into a separate screen for combat. I'm really looking forward to it.
Nope. Yakuza 4 and the zombie spinoff Dead Souls were just added during PlayStation Experience last month; prior to that, none of the Yakuza games were downloadable. Hopefully they add the first three to PSN at some point.
I really enjoyed what I played of Apotheon at PAX East last year, and was looking forward to picking it up when it released. But free?
Nice...
Is it a Metroidvania? It looks great either way, but that'd be icing on the cake.

No? Sort of? There is different equipment you can equip, and a map that's not dissimilar to a Metroidvania, but I'm not sure if I quite define it that way. Again, it's been almost a year since I played it. I remember the game being attractive as hell (which obviously hasn't changed), and I enjoyed trying out all the different weapon types. Knives, spears, bows, and axes all felt really distinct and changed the gameplay considerably. I also remember really hoping it wasn't coming out soon since it needed a ton of polish at the time, particularly with the collision. But it was fun, and I'm really looking forward to getting my hands on a final version.

Also, holy fuck how did I not know about Apotheon? That art style was totally made for me. I love Greek pottery art.
Sweet! Thanks!
I'm still working through Second Son, then I need to beat First Light.
I'm also working on finishing Titan Attacks, which is awesome.

Shit, I'd download one of the recent Yakuza games for free just for the golf mini-game.

Definitely looking forward to giving 4 a shake sometime soon.

Ah, thanks. It looks neat but definitely not something I would enjoy.

Yup. It's a pretty seamless transition from Shenmue to Yakuza.
Shenmue is the snoozefest, though. I dunno about Yakuza.

Time to fix that!
It's Sega's best series.

I agree! Though... that's not saying all that much nowadays.
