That trailer will definitely get me in the cheap seats. If the Ms is interested and feedback from here is largely positive we may go see it during the initial release.
Of course, neither of us has any real investment in the Fantastic 4 as a franchise, and we both enjoyed both of the first movies, though I acknowledge that Doom was not a good interpretation of the character (Julian McMahon was good, just he's way too low-key to play Doom).
"There's no conversation about [Doom's origins] in the film. We don't have time to talk about me -- I would love it, but we don’t have real time. Yeah, he's still from the same place, his mother is still a gypsy and done her deals, his father still perished from exposure looking after me. He's angry. He's an angry dude. But now he's in Baxter. He's bright and he's trying to make people proud. He found a new father in Dr. Storm, the father of Johnny and adoptive father of Sue. I kind of get adopted as well, in a fantastic performance by Reg E. Cathey. And that's Doom as we see him. He’s a computer technician, a computer scientist. There were rumors he was a hacker or something, but no. Victor Von Doom is who we hope he will be."
Is that like a backpedal, or was it just a rumor? Cus I thought it was pretty much from the horse's mouth on the hacker thing.

There's probably a good chance whoever said "Hacker" thought it basically meant 'person who is good at computers'"

Earlier he'd just said he was an anti-social programmer.
He’s Victor Domashev, not Victor Von Doom in our story. And I’m sure I’ll be sent to jail for telling you that. The Doom in ours—I’m a programmer. Very anti-social programmer. And on blogging sites I’m “Doom”.

why they don't want Doom to be a guy wearing a mask. The old movie had him getting powers that turned his skin metal, this one has his weird crazy cyborg face. It's weird.

Yes, because Doom should be personable and not at all arrogant and contemptuous of all who are not Doom.
I actually think Fantastic Four and Suicide Squad have actually released stuff that I think could be looked forward to, and I feel like a bunch of negative reaction of them are because they are not MCU. And that... puts me off, somewhat I guess. MCU is not the only way (or only franchise) that can make good movies, and not all the MCU movies are super great anyways.

I kinda wonder how much of that falls on writers being unable to avoid neatly tying things together. You've got the Fantastic Four essentially becoming representations of elementals. So it serves to have Doom becoming one as well, but for metal.

I don't think that's true at all. I do think it's an easy way to brush off criticism though.
They're getting negative feedback because their previous movies were total garbage, the creative teams behind them had terrible press in the lead up, and the look of the movies was not really exciting to some people.

People are generally up on Fox's X-men stuff lately (aside from some homophobic jokes in Deadpool)

yeah I mean people lambasted Days of Future Past because it looked like total shit. And then it came out and it was good and people said hey this is good.

You're projecting a view onto people and then dismissing it, which is not only a fallacy, but it shows you aren't actually paying attention to our discussions, because I think people here have done a pretty good job of explaining very specific things they don't like about FF and SS.
I don't even come at these movies as a comic book fan, because while I like Superman and Batman it's not like I actually read any DC these days (or ever, really, outside of the big stuff that gets lots of praise). I don't particularly care if media has a different representation of a character, but I do care if it looks stupid.
MoS was garbage. Their Superman was garbage. BvS is more of the same with a chubby, gloomy batman. No thanks.
Suicide Squad has a hot topic joker with terrible tattoos, a stripper harley, and will smith. It has an interesting premise in that it is a remake of the dirty dozen but doesn't look to have any depth to it at all, unlike it's predecessor.

I apologize if I wasn't clear. I wasn't saying that all of the nonMCU negative stuff was this (indeed, I personally think that BvS looks garbage-y).
I was mostly talking about a post I thought I saw on FF, and now realize was either in another thread, or in my head, which means you're both right, and I probably need to start keeping this shit straight better.

I wonder how much of my feelings on the MCU DCCU thing come down to just being so bored with MCU that I'm inherently interested by anything else. Not excited mind you, but curious.
And I dunno. Both the BvS and Suicide Squad trailers look different enough from each other that maybe future DC movies will have more of their own identities too.
Like maybe Shazam will be neat? I don't have a particularly huge amount of hope. But hey some is ok.
I thought it might be, but it seemed crazy for the games to influence the character that strongly. I guess the movie studio looked at it and went "wait... tits out. We can sell tits out"
Eh, I think both variants of critisicm can be found, especially at the end of the last thread where the nitpicking of the Suicide Squad trailer went to some ridiculous places, like lambasting the first trailer we get for not spelling out the whole plot and describe all the characters motivations.
Mind You, I'm not a fan of the direction of what was shown in the trailer, but for a teaser trailer it explained the basic premise and showed most of the squad, which is totally fine and much better than a super spoilery aproach in my opinion.
Outside of this forum, I could definitely see there being a lot of backlash at some of this stuff for being "different". Maybe even on other parts of this forum, but I don't think that sentiment is really prevalent here. Heck, there are several posters here who I know aren't super keen on Marvel's house style for whom "not like MCU" is a good thing.

The creatives behind captain marvel have specifically said that they are making it fun. they seemed to be particularly trying to distance themselves from the whole arena basically.
I believe the Arkham games were first, then DC's New 52 took that and ran with it, which would be a couple years ago. Couple less terrible variations since then but mostly that's been the trend.
E: Actually I haven't read much of the new Harley comic, did that roller derby - esque costume ever get used outside of the covers?

That argument wasn't about the trailer not spelling things out. It was about the implications it was making, which, not surprisingly, different people interpreted differently.

Well hey. That's neat. I really hope DCCU does allow for a greater variety of tone in their universe. Like if they make that movie all ages, that'd be groovy.

Like, she's definitely super sexual in the animated series, there's an episode if I recall where she's in a nighty, but yeah that look I think originated in AA/AC and then her solo series (which came after those games) seemed to crib from it as well.
And I dunno. Both the BvS and Suicide Squad trailers look different enough from each other that maybe future DC movies will have more of their own identities too.
You know, I've seen people say this and I find it a little surprising. Suicide Squad might be a bit more "playful" as it were, but they both feel like they share the same dingy, dour aesthetic to me.

Actually specifically I remember people coming up for similar looks of Harley when they were trying to match what she'd look like alongside a Ledger Joker.
Which I think would have missed the mark entirely, but that's neither here nor there.

I'm nitpicking a bit here, but your posts did confuse me for a moment. Marvel is making a Captain Marvel movie, DC is making a Shazam movie.
The thing that gets me about the DCCU, is that their TV universe is incredibly popular and well-regarded, and their animated features have a reputation for excellence, and the movies do everything they can to distance themselves from these successful, well-liked branches.

There's a much greater variety in the lighting. Which is a weird sticking point. But BvS kinda has the same looking thing as MoS which is a sort of Bro-Malick.
Suicide Squad is leaning on heavier blues. Ayer by way of Michael Mann. Which is appropriate for a sort of crime thriller.
They both lack that awful overhead lighting of the entire MCU which allows harder edges around the characters for cgi purposes. And generally just doesn't look good in a movie to me.

I'd kinda like for the FF to beat Doom using intelligence rather than the power of friendship and punching things, though.

Also I dunno if it was an active influence, but I'm pretty sure there were cosplayers and people doing fan art of that kind of Harley before either.
