Any estimates on the property damage?

Because yeah, there is going to be hell to pay over the bodycount, but given the amount of wreckage I'm seeing in pictures, plus the fact that I suspect this will severely hamper (if not shut down) commercial traffic in the city for some time......well, this could be a serious economic hit to the local economy, possibly more?

Latest death toll figures from official sources says 44 dead. That seems a little low to me considering the size of the explosion, but maybe they evacuated before it got that bad? Hope so.

The video in OP... when the fence just flies apart from the explosion(around 7 seconds in), my first reaction was "that looks like a special effects shot", because I am more used to seeing that than the real thing. Like I couldn't believe that stuff like that happened in real life and wasn't just lazy cgi.

Coming into work heard the 44 dead 500 injured figures.

Of those 44, 12 are fireman they said.

I'm wondering how exactly injury figures for events like this are determined. Is it just people who need immediate medical treatment? Looking at the footage there's going to have to have been a ton of bruising and minor cuts.

Yikes. All of the home video reminds me of the fertilizer plant in Texas going up. :|

Just a PSA: if you see what looks like a major fire, don't start filming it. Don't spectate it. You can get all sorts of wonderful permanent eye & ear damage even at a 'safe' distance from a big explosion if it happens, and you never know when a big fire might make something cook-off.

Didn't seem like this video was shared. (Linked because it's a Live Leak vid, not a Youtube one, alas.) Filmed by some Americans who were nearby. Looks like there were three explosions, not just two. Eeeesh.

There is a video that is apparently from someone livestreaming the fire. It's a couple blocks away. The last frame or two is all the stuff in front rushing at the camera as shrapnel.

    -edit

Same one was the guardian piece from earlier in the thread, actually. Still no idea how they didn't get immediately shredded.

As of 6 hours ago, courtesy of this New York Times article.
Government officials, acutely aware of concerns over the fire, have sought to suppress unauthorized information. They seemed unprepared for the tough questions posed at a news conference in Tianjin on Friday, including why hazardous chemicals had been stockpiled so near populated areas. They abruptly ended the conference.
The developers of Vanke Port City, a residential complex that is practically at the incinerated area’s doorstep and has now been evacuated indefinitely, said they had been told when they started construction in 2010 that the warehouses in question handled only “common goods.”
Suspicions among the populace were further raised by the censorship of information. The vacuum was filled by online speculation about whether the owners of Rui Hai International Logistics, the company that owned the warehouse where the blasts originated, might be connected to senior government leaders.

56 dead, 24 of those firefighters who didn't know about the hazardous chemicals, 700+ injured. Homes found to be within 2000' of the blast, when the legal requirements said no closer than 3200'. 6000 residents forced from their homes. Fires are still burning and there have been periodic explosions throughout the day.

The BBC was reporting that "military chemical experts" are running tests. This article touches on some of that. As well, apparently a survivor has been dug out of the rubble.
The warehouse that exploded in the port area is owned by a company called Ruihai Logistics, which specialises in handling hazardous goods.
The company's website says these include compressed gas, flammable liquid and toxic chemicals - some of which become highly explosive when mixed with water.

A comments thread I've read in response to one of explosion videos mentioned that there may have been calcium carbide in the warehouse. When mixed with water it forms acetylene, which is very flammable and can explode if exposed to a shockwave.

Said video appeared to have fire fighters at the edge of it based on the lights...they probably would have appreciated knowing there was something in there that shouldn't have water sprayed on it. You know, before there was another explosion and they were presumably killed.

Edit: Actually, that is straight up mentioned in the NY TIMES article. Well, "nice" to see it confirmed.

They had things which should not be exposed to water stored next to things which require water flooding if they catch on fire. Good plan!

    Holy shit.

Companies here are supposed to report hazardous materials they have on site just so first responders can know. There's an entire database that can be accessed just for such a thing. But realistically, I don't know how well the government actually enforces it or how many companies actively try to hide it to avoid regulations. And really that's fucking terrifying.

According to the news I'm looking at, the death toll is officially up to 112, with 90 more missing, and over 700 injured.

Apparently there were further explosions Saturday morning (allegedly cars in a parking lot going up), and an evacuation radius was expanded to 3 kilometers based on sodium cyanide being found in the area.

I read a report that there were small secondary explosions still occuring, but can't find it. Might've been bullshit. Death toll is up to 112, and there's fucking sodium cyanide in the air.

From the pictures hsu posted it looks like whatever exploded was in a container.

So basicly any nasty shit the company was shipping in containers can be in the air or spread around.

I'm not saying a wharehouse explosion would have been more excusible, but just plonking down containers with hazadues material seems stupid beyond belief.

    Fucking -Sodium Cyanide-

For anyone who doesn't have knowledge about this sort of stuff that's bad news.

Like for everyone, I'll bet dollars to donuts there were plenty of types of acid in that warehouse too. NaCN reacts with acids to form Hydrogen cyanide and here I'll just like wikipedia do the talking.
A hydrogen cyanide concentration of 300 mg/m3 in air will kill a human within 10–60 minutes.[44] A hydrogen cyanide concentration of 3500 ppm (about 3200 mg/m3) will kill a human in about 1 minute.[44] The toxicity is caused by the cyanide ion, which halts cellular respiration by acting as a non-competitive inhibitor for an enzyme in mitochondria called cytochrome c oxidase. Specifically CN− binds to Fe in the heme subunit in cytochromes, interrupting electron transfer.

Hydrogen cyanide has been absorbed into a carrier for use as a pesticide. Under IG Farben's brand name Zyklon B (German >Cyclone B, with the B standing for Blausäure - "Prussic Acid"),[45] it was used in the German extermination camp mass killing during World War II. The same product is currently made in the Czech Republic under the trademark "Uragan D2". Hydrogen cyanide was also the agent employed in judicial execution in some U.S. states, where it was produced during the execution by the action of sulfuric acid on an egg-sized mass of potassium cyanide.[not specific enough to verify]

Hydrogen cyanide is commonly listed amongst chemical warfare agents known as blood agents.[46] As a substance listed under Schedule 3 of the Chemical Weapons Convention as a potential weapon which has large-scale industrial uses, manufacturing plants in signatory countries which produce more than 30 tonnes per year must be declared to, and can be inspected by, the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons. During the First World War, the United States and Italy used hydrogen cyanide against the Central Powers in 1918. France had used it in combat already in 1916, but this proved to be ineffective due to physical conditions.[47]

Under the name prussic acid, HCN has been used as a killing agent in whaling harpoons.[48] From the mid 18th century it was used in a number of poisoning murders and suicides.[49] Cyanide has also been used in major occurrences of suicide in the 20th century, including the deaths of over 900 people at Jonestown and the mass suicides in 1945 Nazi Germany.

Hydrogen cyanide gas in air is explosive at concentrations over 5.6%.[50] This is far above its toxicity level.
