The child soldier stuff isn't dealt with much, but I was very pleasantly surprised how well they handled it
Heck, I was even afraid there might be a ton of oblivious racism in the part of the game set in Africa, and they managed to dodge that bullet too! The political anti-corporate stuff that's going on there is actually surprisingly appreciative of colonialism affecting indigenous people
And that ties into the greater language and cultural imperialism themes running through the plot!
If all the tits weren't so distracting I'd be very impressed with Kojima
I still kind of am!

Metal Gear has traditionally been a very multicultural series anyway, though, so child soldiers were thematically the least of people's worries with Kojima

You want to know what stopped me in my tracks faster than anything else in this game?
White Mamba spoilers:
I go through my usual routine for this mission: Ask Quiet to recon the nearest outpost and proceed tag everyone in there.
I found a perch to sit on and proceed to look for the nearest enemy, and as soon as I have him in my scope, my finger gets as far away from my trigger as it can.
As soon as I saw the first kid wearing the armor and handling a weapon in there, I let out an audible "oh fuck" because it really is fucked up.
I mean, we don't deal with "child soldiers" and the like in our usual day-to-day nor on gaming culture, but shit, that was powerful to me.
I've definitely found myself a bit disappointed that the game includes real, meaningful imagery like this, and yet the only conversation happening is with boobs. I mean, a lot of it is due to the failings of the story to really develop upon any of its themes, especially that one, but still. That's some raw shit that's getting depicted. How deep Kojima had originally intended to go with it is another thing I'd really like to know about. We've seen bits and pieces of it in trailers that didn't appear in the final game, so Konami may have found it too questionable and too uncomfortable of a subject to fully explore.
Yeah, Kojima really cut his nose to spite his face with the Quiet stuff. Really takes away from the serious themes of the game.
Not exactly the point I was making, and not interesting in expanding upon it.
Is it possible to spin off the whole Quiet discussion into it's own thread?
Because it keeps devouring this one.
Please.
Guys, you're not gonna get far begging for a subject to be moved to another thread. If you don't want to talk about, don't. And I encourage you to talk about whatever you want to talk about. Believe me, there are people who want to talk about that too, just like there are people who want to talk about Quiet. It can be done, trust me. You might just need to post a couple of times to make it through the chatter, but that's true about any popular subject.
If Dragon's Crown can have multiple conversations going on, so can MGS. Don't let a subject take over what you want to talk about, just don't give up easily. Nobody is ignoring you, threads for popular games move fast and things get dropped. Especially when there are arguments going on. Doesn't take away the importance of what you want to talk about.
The conversation keeps retreading itself specifically because of the rate at which this thread moves, and we've already seen misunderstandings due to people not being interested in or not being able to follow the thread closely. Moving it to a separate thread would make it easier to follow for those who wish to do so, and more likely to be productive as a result. I'm looking at this from the perspective of people who want to engage with it as much as people that don't. It's a larger subject than just the one character.
But that's just my take as an observer. Do what you will.
Metal Gear has traditionally been a very multicultural series anyway, though, so child soldiers were thematically the least of people's worries with Kojima
I wouldnt call them multicultural at all, really, largely because the only cultures represented before were USA and... That's kinda it!
They mention things like the Liberian civil war in passing, but never in depth. MGS4 took place in exciting real world locations like "unnamed Middle East country" and "unnamed Eastern Europe country" while MGS3 took place in the steamy tropical jungles of RUSSIA. And I wouldn't call Vulcan Raven a particularly progressive portrayal of an Inuit or Native American character
An argument could be made for Peace Walker, I suppose
What gave me some confidence though, is Kojima being staunchly anti-war and anti-torture. The only people who glorify war and torture people for information are, universally, Bad Dudes. I didn't expect him to suddenly turn heel on that stuff, which made me think he might do okay on the child soldier front
The Africa stuff genuinely impressed me though. As did Code Talker! Debatably the best written Metal Gear character in the whole series!
Codetalker is the worst exposition bot in the game. His only redeeming quality is the hamburger tapes.

Well from the moment that there were Soviet soldiers in Afghanistan speaking in actual full Russian conversations (and people speaking in their native tongues in general), it seemed pretty apparent that they were going out of their way to represent cultures fairly in MGSV
Out of interest does anyone know where to get an electrospinning specialist in Afghanistan? I lost a couple of hours of progress to a blue screen corupting my save and I miss knife wielding DD.
One of the missions features one of them. Not sure which one though.
I picked mine up from the prisoner extraction mission around that same point. Mission 10, I think?

I really loved how uncomfortable all the torture scenes were! (Except Quiet's)
or
I really loved how well-choreographed all the camerawork was! (Except Quiet's)
or
I really enjoyed how well they handled all the prisoner stuff without being gratuitous! (Except Quiet's)
After a certain point you kind of can't ignore it when it butts up against every other taboo thing in the game in uncomfortable ways
People have selective memories; there have been plenty of discussions extolling Quiet (most behind spoilers so I dunno), but we remember the contentious ones more often, because it creates discord. I'd advise remembering that while it's ok to enjoy a work and still ridicule it, it's also ok to enjoy a work and not ridicule it. You shouldn't feel pressured to agree, or defend, or attack, because in the end the only person you have to convince is you. You won't clash with anybody's opinion here unless both of you want to have a go, because we all know that trying to force an opinion on someone else is impossible.
I can disagree with all of this and nobody would be able to do anything about it (I can't though, because I haven't played the game yet. I'm trying). The stakes have never been lower. So if you don't want to engage, don't engage. It's not as bad as it looks here, and if you take an even look at the history there's been a lot to talk about all over the place.
Marty: The future, it's where you're going? Doc: That's right, twenty five years into the future. I've always dreamed on seeing the future, looking beyond my years, seeing the progress of mankind. I'll also be able to see who wins the next twenty-five world series.

Despite locking you to an A-rank, you need to use several of those things to get some of the codenames (Whale, in particular, requires you to use bombardments)
I just wasted money by repeating A Hero's Way, waiting until the commander is giving his speech and then dispensing some American Justice on him

Well if you just look at it like that, sure. But if you're someone who believes that the objectification of women in media hurts into alot of social issues such as self image issues among women, general sexism, rape culture, and a boys club games industry, then it's just a tad bit more difficult to ignore.
Kinda like how I wouldn't be able to ignore if the game was overtly racist or transphobic or homophobic. Even if it was only about the one main gay/racial minority/trans character. It'd be hard to ignore!
I get that it isn't a great character design. But just like Ewoks in Star Wars, at some point you to admit its a thing you don't like, and move on. Not telling folks not to talk about it, but for some of us, its just not as big a deal.
And I like Ewoks in Star Wars, so take that for what its worth.
Just completed 42 (Metallic Archaea Extreme). Even had the good fortune of having it be an S-Rank and 4/4 Objectives completed in the same go.
But that's not my main point here.
Nothing else opened up. No new main-missions nor "important" Side-Ops. I don't know if I need to clear even "more" side-ops or what, or if it's at this point where I should start completing everything on S-Rank and all objectives.
Either way, so far Eli has stolen the MG with all the kids, and that was the last cutscene I had.

Like, that's gotta be obnoxious, at the very least
But I play the game and love the game, so like... I don't blame anyone for ignoring that stuff to enjoy it, same as I don't blame anyone for refusing to even play the game and deal with that shit
Let's not dismiss the concerns though! It was silly and childish the first time, not all the times after that

I hit this bump
you have to play a few more missions. Maybe even completing side ops counts? I'm not sure about that
I replayed a few older missions to get better ranks/optional objectives and then I got the trigger for mission 46, so that's what I recommend

Way too early to talk ending spoilers, but I sure as heck don't like the changes Twin Snakes made to MGS1. But I do accept that some people don't have as a big a problem with superman Snake doing a sick rebound off of an in flight anti tank missile.
I'm getting really sick of the main missions trend of starting to use people in full combat armor. I mean, yeah. It's harder. I guess. It just makes all the weapons I've actually been focusing on the entire game USELESS! Thanks game!

What if those people who don't have a problem dismissed your view completely or just flat out said you were wrong or looking to be offended? Would you be OK with people completely shutting down any conversation about it because it doesn't bother them? Or people bringing up how silly it is to dislike those changes, only to go "nah, I don't want to talk about it" when someone tries to discuss or expand on why they dislike them? Basically calling the conversation off topic?
Because that's what people who don't mind the Quiet stuff have been doing. It's fine if it doesn't bother you. Sorry if people wanting to talk about it bothers you. We're still going to talk about it when it's brought up.

Now that I have the codenames for stealth and not killing, I've stopped using Sneaky Snake and have switched to my S+ ranked lady soldier, who has no qualms about gearing up with a riot shield and spraying down anyone unworthy of joining Diamond Dogs
I also bring a grenade launcher just in case I encounter a riot suit dude who needs to learn that resistance is futile

I mean, nobody likes it when someone tries to meta the conversation, but I believe that people just need to find the mindset that works for them that doesn't obligate needless confrontation. We are all, at this moment, saying basically the same thing: discussion is free, participation is optional.

This game has some great stuff in it, but jeez I have never seen any game so slavishly, relentlessly dedicated to getting in its own way. You want to pause and access the menu? Wait for the servers to catch up for a few seconds. You want to try that mission again to go for the S rank or just try to be stealthy in general? You get to watch the same chopper landing animation that plays EVERY SINGLE TIME and run a billion miles to the actual mission start point. I may just have to take a break just to give myself some time to get over being sick of doing that condensed anti-fun stuff again and again and again and again...it's a shame, this was so close to being the perfect open world MGS game, there is some GREAT stuff in there, but those elements just about tank the whole experience. Maybe someone will fan patch in a quick save or something.
I'm getting really sick of the main missions trend of starting to use people in full combat armor. I mean, yeah. It's harder. I guess. It just makes all the weapons I've actually been focusing on the entire game USELESS! Thanks game!
That's a feature, not a bug! Game's telling you to change up your tactics
Go in during the day instead of the night, CQC instead of snipe, gas grenades instead of guns
You forget how many options you have until the game takes your easy ones away from you. It took me a while to work around it too

And I like Ewoks in Star Wars, so take that for what its worth.
Mission 42
But that's not my main point here.
Nothing else opened up. No new main-missions nor "important" Side-Ops. I don't know if I need to clear even "more" side-ops or what, or if it's at this point where I should start completing everything on S-Rank and all objectives.
Either way, so far Eli has stolen the MG with all the kids, and that was the last cutscene I had.
yeah but you could have had wookies
Doc: That's right, twenty five years into the future. I've always dreamed on seeing the future, looking beyond my years, seeing the progress of mankind. I'll also be able to see who wins the next twenty-five world series.
Would you say the same to people who are upset about the ending/story/cut content? Or cassettes vs codecs?
Like, that's gotta be obnoxious, at the very least
But I play the game and love the game, so like... I don't blame anyone for ignoring that stuff to enjoy it, same as I don't blame anyone for refusing to even play the game and deal with that shit
Let's not dismiss the concerns though! It was silly and childish the first time, not all the times after that

I hit this bump
I replayed a few older missions to get better ranks/optional objectives and then I got the trigger for mission 46, so that's what I recommend

Way too early to talk ending spoilers, but I sure as heck don't like the changes Twin Snakes made to MGS1. But I do accept that some people don't have as a big a problem with superman Snake doing a sick rebound off of an in flight anti tank missile.
And that's it.

It shouldn't, but not sure how detailed they made that system.
That's a feature, not a bug! Game's telling you to change up your tactics
Go in during the day instead of the night, CQC instead of snipe, gas grenades instead of guns
You forget how many options you have until the game takes your easy ones away from you. It took me a while to work around it too
