Um, I think we can see atoms now, so that isn't theory.

    Fuck you.
    Fuck electron microscopes?
This is technically incorrect. Every method we've used to visualize atomic structures does not actually give us a picture of what the atom looks like, it gives us a picture of the medium's interaction with some component of the atomic structure.

Electron microscopes image the scattering of electrons of the orbitals of atoms, while atomic force microscopes measure some combination of electrostatic repulsion and the Pauli exclusion principle. Scanning Tunneling Microscopy measures the ability of electrons to tunnel through a particular point on a surface and we assume that since there's no reason for it to vary that this corresponds to changes in the atomic structure, but it is in fact at best a measure of the local density of states for electrons to enter - hence graphite, which gives a nice atomic structure because it's actual crystal lattice structure varies it for every 2nd atom, giving good contrast.

The most important thing you learn about imaging techniques is that you have to be very clear on what exactly you're taking an image of, and what you're inferring that image to be of. As it stands, the images we see of atoms by our various techniques support the theoretical model of the atomic structure.

Yeah I can appreciate that point of view, I pretty much share it. It's just a surprise to find this album actually is pretty good when it came out of such dire surroundings. She doesn't really seem to be promoting it though so I'm not sure it will really help turn her life around, except for selling well and keeping her pocketbooks lined.
