    well, economic mobility was nice

Outside of a few notable outliers - the Big Three automakers, for one - I wonder how much of that is rose-colored glasses and only available to whites, at that

Not just the Big Three Automakers. Pretty much the entire electronics industry. The vacuum tube gets massive wide scale production during the war. It was used as part of proximity fuses during the war, and we produced so many of them that manufacturers got the cost down from ~$500 to $18. And they were produced by hundreds of companies. So you end up with vacuum tubes becoming much, much cheaper, with tons of American companies knowing how to make them. And they start experimenting with them. That's part of the reason that you see an explosion of TVs in the US in the post war period. The lower costs of vacuum tubes make them much cheaper.

Also you see the various companies in the military industrial complex get massive checks for R&D and production. Aircraft manufacturers alone had like 17 different models of fighters produced. Not to mention stuff like the production of the Highway system. It's pretty amazing what you can do when you're one of the few industrial countries that hasn't been bombed to shit.

I should be clear. That's 17 different models fielded in the 50's none of which were war time designs.

AWC and Psi-Lab are huge priorities in the new X-COM. Hell, the Proving Grounds can wait a while. The balance is wonky in that game but I prefer Ironman so it tends to balance out. The bugs though, yeesh.

Too lazy to pull out my book, but black economic mobility was not bad during the '50s - it's one reason why the civil rights movement gained a lot of power in the '60s compared to the '20s, increased buying power for blacks. It was still a lot worse than for whites, especially because of redlining minorities out of profitable property ownership. Then by the '70s just as economic mobility was really improving for blacks the manufacturing sector collapsed and a lot of blacks got caught on the lower rung of a splitting middle class. Manufacturing definitely shouldn't be considered as some sort of outlier in that history, it's pretty influential.

Today economic opportunities are split more by class - rich blacks and whites look much more similar than rich blacks to poor blacks.

Super interesting. And yeah, I meant "outlier" in the sense of a strong heavy-industry manufacturing that could result in a Skilled Trades path for guys who started on the line, as opposed to like, light-industry unskilled labor manufacturing.

I spent a good five minutes looking for a 0:02 sec video of that just, no dice :bigfrown:

the advanced war center does two awesome things. 100% heal rate w/ engineer but it also retrains any soldier (keeps AWC perks) with like 4-5 days downtime

    it's the best

You know I still haven't built that thing?

I built a late psionics center, too, and the problem is even with an advanced psi amp my dude isn't psionically powerful enough to dominate any of the late game enemies. At least stasis works.

AWC gave my ranger Rupture and my combat specialist Rapid Fire early on in the game.

i drank many alien tears. they combine for like 200 kills

I should also point out that in the 50's we had a vastly larger merchant marine then anyone else, and we used it to export tons and tons of goods. So with manufacturing way up, you also start seeing ancillary industries like advertising take off. And in the 50's you're starting to see the early fruits of the Green Revolution. So food production is increasing as well. Admittedly 50's culinary styles would do awful things with that food but lots of food produced with less labor and more cheaply to the consumer.

    Talking of the 90s.

First confirmed case of PrEP failing.

Wonder if this is going to signal a change to the dangerous habits that have formed in parts of the gay community towards protection that have developed in the last ten years. Like I know a few people who regularly hook up online and don't use protection, and I'm just left there thinking 'what the fuck'.

You don't need PrEP failing for this to be a problem.

The one group in the US that hasn't really had a fall incident rates at the same speed as other groups is MSM.

The fall off in protection among the younger MSM is one of the major reasons.

It is something I know HIV folks have been trying to work on here for a while.

I also didn't build the awc for a while (looked around for how to increase squad size, rushed guerilla tactics center immediately; was not disappointed.
..I do not understand this medic hate at all. They do fine dps with their rifles and perhaps with their WAR suit+heavy weapon, and they are completely vital for the way I play, which is not cautiously.

..look, there's a turn counter and also I get bored sneaking forward, so every mission someone is going to take a double move and get shot a million times by the revealed enemies. A support will keep them from dying. Also top tier medic skill is great for clearing every status effect+heals for everyone.

I don't care that all my dudes get wounded; I just have a deep roster. Even before the AWC where they were getting wounded for like 30 days.

I wonder how sustainable my strategy will be on impossible. But not sure whether my next run will be impossible or ironman commander (current one is savescum commander).
