They were ok, I didn't like that they abandoned Rimmer's growth after learning his true parentage, though his promotion episode was fun. And the one on the Karma ship had it's moments.

It's not like Red Dwarf ever had a season arc, but it always had the drive to get home or to get Kochanski, and a lot of that drive seems to have been abandoned for just guys in space. It'd be nice for them to have a goal that is directly pushing them forward, or for some of the better out-there plots like the JFK one or fighting their selfish future selves.

A bit more forward thrust would be interesting, but a lot of the classic episodes were just them tooling around and having adventures and the series that everyone seems to dislike were much more focused on complete arcs. Maybe they just didn't want to write another lame cliffhanger that would require another joke non-explanation.

I think 10 and 11 were filmed back to back? I found them a mixed bag, but generally more positive than negative. A lot of the time, especially in 11, it felt like the settings were a bit under-cooked, the transition kind of jarring. But the characters were still there and a lot of the jokes worked. No regrets.

How's the Raleigh Redux series, and Raleigh in general?

Looking at the 2017 Redux 2 for a more relaxed but still capable ride after being out of the game awhile.

Hi bike thread! I'm thinking about getting a bike after I move to the Bay Area as I need a speedier way to commute and don't have a car. It's been a long while since I last had a bike and pretty much the first time I'm buying one myself. What are some good things to know before I commit? Also, are there any particularly good online stores or can I just stick with amazon?

Commuter? In the hilly Bay Area? Get disk brakes, carbon fork, consider three gears on the front derailleur for easier climbs. If you haven't had a bike in a while I'd recommend buying from a local shop; yes you will pay more than from Amazon or Nashbar but they will help size and fit the bike and that's super important. What budget are you planning?

It's more of the south bay area. San Mateo-ish. Pretty flat, all things considered. As for a budget, probably around $500 at max.

You can still get a solid commuter for that price range but it won't have a carbon fiber fork or disc brakes. I agree with going to a bike shop though.

I've got a reasonably decent Fuji that I feel like I need to use more, because I haven't ridden it much at all since I moved to where I am now, nearer to one of this town's bus hubs (parking at my school is awful so I basically never drive on a daily basis)

campus is basically two giant uphills so it's very definitely uphill both ways, but that's just cardio right?

For a commuter bike you don't need anything fancy or difficult. Skip discs, carbon, etc. A basic steel frame with well-liked components from a decent local bike shop will last you approximately forever if you don't leave it out in the rain every day. You can pick up a totally serviceable Trek FX / Verve / etc. for under $500 including a helmet. The LBS will make sure you end up on the right size frame, give you a basic fitting to get the adjustments right, etc.

Discs are really handy for commuting give their power and consistency. The big thing with a less expensive bike is to replace broken parts with better versions.

oh, funny thing about my Fuji's build, because my friend who built it is a pretty huge bike nerd - it's got about the most robust wheels I've ever seen on a non-mountain bike. Velocity Chukkers. great hybrid commuting wheel, if only for the fact that I can hop curbs all day. they do feel like they nearly weigh as much as the frame though, even if that's probably a slight exaggeration. not a light bike, by road bike nerd standards, but at least she's confident at speed and over bumps.

So I was a a TRU last week (in Canada). And low and behold what do I find: a Samus. I haven't seen a samus on a shelf since about 3 weeks after amiibo first came out. Shamefully Samus is the reason why my amiibo addiction started. I never got around to buying her, and I realised "oh crap, these things are scarce and if i want a specific one I need to buy it the second it becomes available"

But I never found a Samus at MSRP. Until last week. Feels kind of full circle.

I also bought a Boo, and omg Boo is great.

Discs are awesome. The vast majority of commuters interested in getting the most bike for their money should probably opt for rim brakes. The gains are very small compared to the increase in cost, especially at the low end. You can have a mechanical disc upgrade for typically $100 but they won't be terribly good brakes.

A lot of basic commuter bikes still don't have reasonable disc options because there aren't any good cheap discs. The wheelsets are more expensive, the brakes are more expensive, the setup is more expensive, etc. That's already starting to change (see the Specialized Sirrus, though its discs somehow feel slightly worse in the dry than the generic vees on the rim model), but we're not there yet.

Totally agree. I also am a huge fan of disc brakes but you're spending less than $500 you have to back away from models that have more luxury options because those options are going to include lowest quality parts. You could go to Target and get a bike with disc brakes and a full suspension for like $300 but the entirety of it's components are going to be cut-rate garbage.

It's manageable. When it starts making a third copy, the first copy disappears.

I'd say doing guild run inter-faction pack making and pirating that across the ocean was the most fun I've had in an mmo.

For me it was being in a guild with the Goons and pirating all day long. I can't recall the number of fishermen I've personally killed, or the number of ships I've helped sink. Pulling alongside a boat and swarming over on gliders to murder the entire crew and then steal their fish was just so fucking thrilling. Then making the getaway and getting into harbor and selling the fish before they'd catch back up with us and murder us.

You know what, fuck it, I'ma reinstall this and fuck around some. Is there a PA guild still? I remember since I was playing with Goons I was on a different server and I didn't want to start anew just to play with y'all, but it's been so long since I played that now I wouldn't be against starting a new character.

edit: heh, I just remembered that we'd use the Center for Disease Control logo on our sails and we'd announce in chat that the area was being quarantined due to the plague and that all their fish would have to be confiscated, then we'd start hunting them all down. People would get so fucking mad about it while we couldn't stop giggling in whatever voice program we were using.
