Just saw the movie for the third time. It's hilarious I've seen this three times now because two of these times weren't planned and instead initiated by someone else.
Still good. I do wish there was a little less cringe in parts (penis Parker? Really? Like you could get a group of seniors to care about a sophomore enough to chant this at a party) but overall still pretty fun. Start to see flaws, none of which I could coherently explain at 2am, but can overlook them the same as any other action movie.
As far as the fight near the end
I think most marvel fights are daytime, colorful affairs where you can easily see who's good and bad and where the fight is going. However now three times Peter has fought (van chase, heist truck, and airplane) at night, against a villain with "realistic" equipment that isn't brightly colored and spiderman wearing blue and black so the red is the only easily tracked part. So while I personally could follow along, I can see how it's not as good as other films. Maybe it's to hide some of the cgi issues?
Wait,
Was Flash supposed to be a senior? I assumed he was a sophomore like Peter since they were in the same science class. Since Flash was the DJ that was why had the chant going.
I'm inferring because he was driving to school and homecoming, and the NY permit driving age is 16 and Peter is 15, so I would guess he was a senior if he's driving himself there.
I am unsure how being one year older makes him two grades higher than Peter.
I am a High School Librarian. I know sophomores who are 16.
Because he'd have to be 17 to drive his date to Homecoming.
Though Flash "borrowing" the car while 16 is incredibly in character.
That friggin car
We cringed so hard when Spidey trashed the car. Oooh that was painful.
I kinda liked Amazing's Flash more. He was a jerky jock but he wasnt a dick and he and Peter made amends. I dont see this version coming around like that.
I have a podcast now. It's about video games and anime!Find it here.
I wonder how much of the abusive father backstory they will or won't keep

Okay saw it again
Re Flash driving
So Liz is a senior. Peter is a sophomore. I think Flash is a junior or senior. Peter is in two different science classes, chemistry and physics, the second is with Flash. Peter is probably just smart enough to be taking an higher level science class with upperclassmen. The only thing I'd say that makes me slightly believe he is a junior is that the AcaDeca coach is planning for the next year's meeting and Flash is there. Considering the finals are held in April, if flash were a senior he'd graduate before the next competition so probably wouldn't be there.
Also their homecoming is super crazy late at the end of the school year. Ours is the first week of October.

Huh
Homecoming has always appeared to happen towards the end of the school year in stuff I've seen. (I forget where mine actually happened)

That's Prom. Homecomming is usually centered around the first home game a highschool football team has after a series of away games. Football is played in the fall.

Also fuck. I have to go back to Target and get the rest of these various action figures to have all the parts for Vulture's wings. He is for sure my favorite MCU villain now. The only thing he doesn't have are the control sticks/ magnetic grabbers/ punching things he is holding that seems to actually control the wings moving around kinda like VR controllers.
I'm pretty sure there was a line about the movie being in the fall? I think they kept Homecoming in the fall and movexd AcaDecca around
That makes much more sense. Then I guess Flash could be either a junior or senior.
Since if the competition was not for another year, even if he was a senior, it would be likely he'd hang around with the rest of the team for the rest of the school year helping them train and practice.
Also you can generally take ap science courses in whatever order best fits your schedule since they're probably only offered one period every day and the AP students are also more likely to be schedule limited by electives, so it's not uncommon to have people of every grade in there.

It's pretty uncommon around here, but it was a science magnet high school.

The only thing I find unbelievable is that Peter is taking fucking Algebra as a sophmore.
That is fucking hogwash bullshit.
Algebra 2/Trig? Sure. But not regular ol' Algebra.
Humor can be dissected as a frog can, but dies in the process.
I can't believe it's canon now that phase 1 all happened in five months
Nah, while Iron Man 1 took place six months before IM2, which takes place cocurrently with IH and Thor, Stark specifically mentions the Avengers initive was scrapped "years ago" during the first Avengers movie, IIRC.

Peter's fancy science magnet might not have sports. My school didn't.
Maybe the AcDec team returning from finals is their equivalent.

Peter walks across the school's football field on the way to school the first time and there are players practicing.
It's not super hard. The biggest flub (before Spider-Man at least) was Iron Man 3 taking place at Christmas, and some shenanigans involving the Agent Carter tv show in relation to the short film and the founding of SHIELD.
1940's - First Avenger (WW2 stuff)
6 months prior to IM2 - Iron Man
2010 - IM2, Thor, Incredible Hulk (Same week!)
Between 2010 and 2012 - Modern day First Avenger stuff
2012 - Avengers, Iron Man 3?
2013 - Dark World
2014 - Winter Soldier, Guardians of the Galaxy
Six months after GotG1 - GotG2
2015 - Age of Ultron, Ant-Man
2016 - Civil War, Doctor Strange
TV shows get sprinkled in-between, with AoS frequently having specific episode lead-ins. (Netflix stuff is a little more flexible.)
2020 - Homecoming? (Eight years after the Avengers)
I think someone got confused on Spider-Man and though "age of the MCU" = "time since the Avengers"
I feel like Civil War and Homecoming have somewhat established that IM1 was in 2008. Which, given how IM2 opens with Tony kinda being top of his game and also pretty far along the "poisonous metal" game, I feel works better.

Did I miss a reference to Homecoming taking place 8 years after the avengers?
I remember Happy saying he's been carrying the wedding ring for 8 year.

IM2 literally opens with the end of IM1 and then "SIX MONTHS LATER."
Given how quickly the metal poison was accelerating at the start of IM2, I think the six months makes more sense.
Though Stark was missing for like 3 months before the end of that movie, so it could totally start in 2009 and not ruffle a single feather.

The very beginning.
Shows Toomes and he crew cleaning up right after The battle of New York then slam cuts and says 8 Years Later.
However, in Age of Ultron, Vision mentions "the 8 years since Mr Stark revealed himself as Iron Man"
So either IM1 was 2008 and AoU was 2016, or it goes 2010-2018
I don't know if you can blame this one on the Time Monks.
But Strange was dicking around with time pretty hard at the end of his movie, and we know there's got to be a cost for time dickery...

Peter and Flash's little arc in ASM was my favourite part of that movie.
Flash awkwardly trying to comfort Peter while Peter lashes out at him in grief was a lovely moment.

I kind of like it better if Flash really does start out as an asshole
Between the beats of him really hammering Peter on the Spider-Man thing and him obviously resenting him for not taking his academics as seriously as he was, i can see an arc there
They don't make it explicit but i like to think Flash was mad because he is in fact the president of the Spider-Man fanclub as is right and proper

Stan Lee made him a troubled war hero and he knew what he was doing! Great story btw, one of my favourites. Really made the character something else.
his "redemptive" arc is definitely a great thing, and is unfortunately not something that is ever touched on in any Spider-man movie, with maybe the lone exception of ASM... and even then, only to a minor degree
I reckon it's a huge part of why Agent Venom is so good, but also means it's really unlikely that version of Venom is ever going to appear in the MCU. But who knows? "Snooty rich kid" is a great take on your average bully, maybe someone'll figure out how to make this Flash as appealing a character as the 616 one.

Oh I know I just thought I'd point that out since I found it interesting.
I initially thought maybe it was in the fall but AcaDecca finals are always April, a fact I know as a nerd high school teacher.

Homecoming technically takes place in 2020 because the scriptwriters can't count, apparently.
