actually it's a common misconception that goofy dies. he in fact is only knocked unconscious. you can see that he appears in several additional scenes throughout the game.
the common interpretation is that Goofy's "death scene" is just a cheap, short-lived emotional ploy, but if you examine the text closely, the subtle shifts in "goofy"'s characterization and dialogue following his "death" actually point at something more sinister - the party member who joins Sora and Donald for the remainder of the game shares some superficial similarities to the original goofy, certainly, but a close reading of kh2 and the games that follow it (chronologically) reveals too many missteps and outright contradictions to be a mistake on the part of the writers. The exact manner of goofy's replacement and the identity/motive of the impostor goofy has yet to be revealed, but it seems safe to assume that whoever came back from that close scrape with death was not just a changed man, but a different man entirely
I am quietly confident this dangling plot thread will be integral to the next kingdom hearts game
