They should close it on Wednesday too, with the high around -13 and the low -30.

They closed school tomorrow, so I expect Wednesday and possibly Thursday, too. My daughter is getting quite the extended weekend out of this.
The drive in today was fun, barely a third of the streets were plowed. I'm debating doing the park and ride again for the stupid cold days. I hate taking the bus, but I also would probably hate frostbite. EA just putting that everywhere it don't belong.

My house has the thermostat set to 54. Everything is cold. Boss told everyone to WFH today. I have to wear gloves on my hands, and I have 3 blankets on top of me.
I can't see how this cold snap is good at all for the environment.

My house is over 130 years old, has minimal wall insulation, 30+ year old windows, and is generally not able to take the cold. Setting it higher just means the furnace runs all the time, and, though it is new, I don't want to burn it out or have mega high energy bills.
I can sit with a heated blanket covered by lots of blankets and use gloves. I'm in meetings all day. It's good stuff.

I'd worry your pipes are going to freeze at that temperature.

My hope would be that you could do both lowered thermostat + localized heating and also have enough insulation that your pipes aren't in imminent danger.
I'm really worried my car isn't going to start after work
Go run it a bit in your lunch break.

I'm not worried at all about the pipes freezing.
I don't understand the fear that pipes will freeze if the house temperature is at all below 74 degrees.
Like, the freezing point for standing water is 32. There are 22 degrees of heat between my house and freezing. And time. Water does not freeze the second the thermostat hits 32.

My concern is that if the area by my thermostat says one thing, my basement crawl space, through which some of my pipes go, will be significantly cooler since I have no vents there. Same for the exterior wall up which one of my pipes run- while insulated, it’s far cooler to the touch than my dining room (where my thermostat is). This pipe has frozen each of the past two years but fortunately never burst.
TLDR, I have a pipe that freezes even when keeping the house at 70 and so let the kitchen sink slowly drip all winter

People are worried because it happens all the time. My father in law makes a killing right now fixing freeze ups in mobile homes, but plumbers are also making money unfreezing pipes in regular homes too. I had a friend who's heat went out last night from a gas leak and they had to get a plumber to fix a freeze up.
Remember, the outside of the house is cooler than the inside. Exterior walls with pipes can freeze.
But if you want to roll the dice then just make sure to post the plumber bill later.

Meh. I still think it's completely overblown.
Also, Xcel has said to stop running your furnaces, as they are worried about their supply of natural gas.
Also, also, there are lots of power outages.
So, that means you are fucked. Can't heat your house with natural gas, can't heat with electricity.
Half of my house has lost power, and Xcel supposedly knows about it, but I might be spending the night in a hotel.

Applies to Becker, Big Lake, Chisago City, Lindstrom, Princeton and Isanti.
Turning off my furnace would be a REAL bad sign - I LIKE my furnace. Fire is lovely this time of year.
Thanks. I had briefly looked, but I am in a meeting. They have a huuuuuge warning on their outage page. https://www.outagemap-xcelenergy.com/outagemap/#

Yeah I read about that on MPR earlier and I did read they asked people to turn their thermostat down for gas conservation. The thing I read said they would pay for a hotel and for plumbers to prevent the pipes from freezing too.
I'd take them up on that if I were you.
Otherwise you might just want to do the letting the faucet run slightly method. Good luck.

Supposedly it’ll be -25 when I go in to work, and -3 when I leave... and I’m noting how that 20 degree swing feels like a totally normal thing, but if it was from 60 to 80 within a day it would be a bigger shock.

The insurance company even recommends at least 55 and I bet at these temps they would recommend higher.

NOTHING WRONG WITH THAT
So we went to the Waterpark.
Can we just move on to Spring?

I needed gas and quit at $10 because it was so damn cold.

Just in time for Convergence, so we can stuff all the sweaty nerds in the Midwest into one hotel!
I forgot it was CONvergence weekend.
That sounds like a blast.
