I think Later Alligator is gonna get some big ol' nods this year. RE2 will probably get some heavy play. Jeff will probably make a push for the new CoD, since he seems bullish on it based on the beta. Goose Game will probably get some style/art nods, though. Judgement will probably get a big push from Alex/Vinny and will probably actually end up on some lists considering this is kind of a weak year. Apex Legends probably ends up in the top 3. Devil May Cry 5 probably gets some nods, maybe in the style category. Power Rangers: Battle for the Grid will totally be in the top 3 for biggest surprise. Control I think ends up in the top 5 minimum. Jedi Knight Fallen Order is the biggest unknown for me, I think. Could end up making a splash, could end up being a big nothing.
And Shadowbringers will be ignored despite being the best thing to come out this year.
I feel like there's a chance they bow out of the biggest mess category; having to weigh in on the hearthstone/blizzard decision and discussing Hong Kong protests just feels like too big a discussion for game of the year talks and their typical avoidance of politics
Edit: that or they miss it completely since none of them really play Blizzard games

I don't think the Blizzard thing rates as a gaming industry hot mess yet.
I don't think the Blizzard thing rates as a gaming industry hot mess yet.
I dunno dude. I'm gonna make a hard disagree there. Personally this Blizzard shit is far worse to me than lootboxes/shitty games being released.
It's extremely shitty, but it's shitty because the HK/China situation is a fucking nightmare. It's less specifically a game industry hot mess.
That said, I did say "yet." It's still day one, but if this just quietly fades away in 48 hours like so much other shit these days, I don't think it rates.
I’m hoping Tetris 99 sneaks in a surprise slot at GOTY.
Other than that, there’s Mario Maker, RE2, Sekiro, Cadence of Hyrule, Bloodstained, MK11, Control, Samurai Shodown, My Friend Pedro, Ape Out, Fire Emblem, Apex Legends, Void Bastards, Baba is You, Outer Wilds, Outer Worlds, Judgment, What the Golf, Daemon X Machina, Gato Roboto...
Control certainly seems like the favorite at the moment, but there’s still a lot coming.
The world is on fire, but there’s never been a better time to play video games.

One of the largest video game publishers in the world putting a live on-air gag order/firing for somebody protesting human rights atrocities is 100% a game industry hot mess. The whole idea that the industry exists in some sort of bubble absent politics is one of the biggest albatrosses around the neck of the industry and its fandom as a whole.

I think Tetris 99 would've had more luck piercing the top 10 if they didn't just have Tetris Effect. I think a lot of the love for that game was them getting back into Tetris and remembering how fun a good Tetris game could be. I can see it in a best surprise category, though.

Kowtowing to a foreign autocrat for sales might be hottest of all messes.
Palmer Lucky investing in new-nazi/conspiracy propaganda might be a distant second.
ESA exposing thousands of journalists and influencers personal phone numbers and addresses, in an industry known for abusive campaigns, ranks pretty god damn high.
Yeah, this year's conversation will be pretty interesting if they do it, I think most of the previous years have been stuff like having a bunch of bad games or lootboxes or a particularly buggy game or something. Something like this that's more social/political would be a big change, but I'd be interested in hearing it.
I wonder how many people are actually going to take action against Blizzard. (is there a separate thread for this? It feels like there should be) Like, WoW, WoW Classic, Starcraft 2, and Overwatch are all hella popular. Are people actually going to stop engaging with those because of this?

I was looking at getting out on Blizzard after Activision gave their cfo like a 30 million hiring bonus, then fired 800 employees after they didn't make their profit goals (like, not because they didn't turn a profit, because they didn't turn ENOUGH of a profit), in addition to the talk of Activision taking a stronger hand in Blizzard now that the old-guard has left.
This easily clinches that decision.
Though I'm not sure Blizzard is even making anything I'd want to buy at this point.

The new CoD is kind of tempting, but I haven't played a new CoD since Modern Warfare 2, so I think I can hold out.
I am excited to hear that they're doing more halloween film and 40s!

My money is on Mario Maker 2 probably taking GOTY since it looks like it's the newest game producing the most content for them this year
Re: Blizzard, I definitely see it being a strong contender of its category. This isn't the first time political shitnanigans has been involved in discussion (eg. Palmer Lucky)
I was really looking forward to trying the new Call of Duty from what I experienced in the beta, but now it's a hard pass. Huge shame
The GB staff not delving into MM2’s multiplayer is a shame. Watching streamers play versus can be exciting and hilarious when connections do not shit the bed.

I'm probably not going to be playing Control until I get a new video card so likely not this year. Unless The Outer Worlds is brilliant I can't see Outer Wilds not being my #1.
This year has had fewer standouts, especially in the AAA space. Transitional year for sure.
Maybe Jedi FO is amazing, and fresh on the mind, and it wins more or less by default, like Shadow of Mordor (which won for being innovative in a bland year)
Sekiro fell flat with most the crew
Apex & Control are top 10 and Jeff may go to bat for Control for #1
Resident Evil 2 could end up on the list which would be hilarious
They may add Untitled Goose Game, but I can see it being dropped easily
Fire Emblem 3 houses is probably bottom half top 10 with a few stark defenders
Cadence of Hyrule has a shot
I can see CoD ending up there
Death Stranding is a big maybe
SMM2 could get the Hitman 2 treatment
Some liked Remnant, but I'm not sure if enough people stuck with it
I'm not sure how the crew will think about the new old Link game

They played some on UPF last week actually. It wasn't a very compelling segment tbh but maybe that was just the levels they were choosing.
Sekiro all depends on whether or not Brad ends up getting to it. It's probably my current goty though.
I can see MM2 in the top 5 but not likely in the top 3. Apex seems like a pretty solid contender for their goty however as it seems to be universally praised, just not effusively.
I'm kind of curious to see what Abby brings to the table as I don't feel like she's really been bullish on much this year.

Goose Game gets its Hitman spot.
They all seem pretty meh on goose game. Which is understandable I think. It's fun but has some weird quirks.
And Shadowbringers will be ignored despite being the best thing to come out this year.

it's on reddit's front page and starting to hit major news sites like CNN. Does that count?
edit: r/blizzard had to go private and the memes are out of control.
I’m gutted it’s delayed but hey add that polish if you need too.

That and not having the Wii U tablet with it kinda makes it a bit inferior.

Play it with a controller because it plays like shit on a phone with touch controls.

My guess right now...
Top 3
Control
Apex
SMM2
Other top 10:
FE:3H
Cadence
CoD
RE2
Maybe:
Jedi
Death Stranding
Links Awakening
Doubtful:
Untitled Goose Game
Sekiro
Remnant
