Best will play a Jedi Master and mentor to the young contestants, while he’ll be joined by “a hilarious humanoid droid companion, voiced by Mary Holland (VEEP, Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre).” Holland is one of the funniest people in the improv scene today – I’ve seen her perform in several comedy shows (including the excellent Wild Horses) and she’s consistently one of the most hilarious people on the stage, so she seems like an excellent fit for this. Meanwhile, Best has experience as an actor, dancer, martial arts expert, and STOMP musician, so he should be able to handle anything that’s thrown his way (an essential skill for any great game show host).

Things Disney should look to do post Episode 9, a sad fans list:
- An "Indiana Jones" franchise featuring an unknown character. Set it in the post Episode 3, pre Episode 6 era. Classic Antagonist (Empire), centered around a lone protagonist. Non interlinked stories. Pros are you only need to work around one actors schedule (rotating support cast) you're not limited to a three movie Arc and you don't have suspense neutered by dealing with a known character.
- A post Episode 9 trilogy, developed by one creative team
- An out of era trilogy, developed by one creative team
-One shots helmed by whatever talent you want to get involved in your sandbox but doesn't want to commit a decade to your corp.
An Indiana Jones style Star Wars movie is just describing Dr Aphra.
Shes an archaeologist who specialises in weapons and technology. And instead of saying 'It belongs in a museum' when she finds a something will say 'it belongs in an armory!'
She has an evil version of C-3PO and R2D2 as her sidekicks.
She has her own comic series and it is awesome. I would kill for her own tv show or movie
I know it won't be like this, but I want Best to run this corrupt Legends of the Hidden Temple style Star Wars themed Jedi training show.
Have Padawans fail and "Guess who's going into the Sarlacc Pit?!", complete with obviously rubber teeth as the screaming Padawan is tossed down into the hole.

Also Thrawn fixed cloning tech and used a hidden ghost fleet to suddenly have more manpower than the Republic could deal with.
And he only lost because he was assassinated.
Betrayed and assassinated by his own bodyguard, no less.
Otherwise Thrawn legit would have won the day. And TBH, his Empire probably wouldn't have been nearly so evil as Palpatine's.
Would he?
The fun thing about re-reading the Thrawn trilogy is seeing just how early Thrawn starts making mistakes that compound. IIRC he makes one in the first book that I think ultimately leads to his downfall.
But the big setpiece battle at the end of Last Command? The smugglers' alliance's unexpected intercession has forced Thrawn to split his forces in a very suboptimal way, and he even has to reassure Pellaeon that they're not beaten yet.
Rukh's assassination made the ending more immediately obvious, but there's nothing saying Thrawn would have definitely won that battle.
And at the same time, he was losing his cloning facility, C'Baoth was dead (though on balance that was probably a positive), and if the attack was successful a major shipyard would have been wrecked, so the outcome of the war itself wasn't a foregone conclusion.

Yeah but he likely would have lived another day to regroup and now know about another enemy in front of him.

I’m really into the premise of Space Indiana Jones. It’s so obvious and elegantly solves most of the awkward cultural stuff that’s pretty clearly in, say, Temple of Doom. Maybe we’ll finally get that movie built around recovering Luke’s mummified hand.

I don't remember the battle per se, but this is more what I was getting at. Maybe he lost that battle, but he definitely would have made it out alive and probably in good order. And then uniting the disparate warlords of the Empire who weren't already allied and coming back another day to claim victory the nascent New Republic was a likely next step.
I genuinely do wonder what a Thrawn Empire would look like. The Empire of the Hand alluded to in later Zahn books had some interesting stuff there.
What's your feelings about the movies so far again?
Why are your expectations different?
My expectations are for a satisfying conclusion to the Skywalker story. I'm not sure why we're spending any time on Finn or Poe's backstory in the final movie of a 9 movie arc. That should have been handled much earlier than the last movie of this series. There's just too much to wrap up and 8 set up almost nothing to work towards as a conclusion in 9. So 9 has to set things up for its own story and then conclude that and the entire 9 movie arc if they are going to make this last movie be a good bookend for the series.
imo
Ah, so the issue is you don't consider the main characters of this trilogy to be the main characters, and you don't care about their story.
Like, Finn is only just now a full-on member of the Resistance. Poe didn't have anything about him outside of "hotshot pilot what crushes on Finn maybe?" in TFA. There is plenty to explore in both of them.
"Why are we dealing with Leia's backstory in RotJ? We should have known this stuff sooner than the last movie in the series."
Thats quite the leap you are making. I'm not sure you could have forced a less charitable reading of such a small post.
I like Rey/Finn/Poe. They are good additions to the overall story.
I'm only saying that the final movie in a 9 movie arc is not the place to start filling out backstory. There's too much else to do. Thats all I'm trying to say.
I think they should have done their backstory in the prior two movies for sure, especially Poe who has really not been a main character so far even though it kind of seems like he was intended to be. Ep8 in particular was a missed opportunity to flesh him out I think. However, this is probably not the last movie of any of these characters. So I don't think it's totally unreasonable to use some time in Ep9 to prepare them for an ongoing role in the franchise.
I've posited this before in the Star Wars threads, but the underpinning critical flaw Thrawn had - and ultimately was destroyed by - was a gross underestimation and misunderstanding of the Force. He was like an ace baseball statistician who could predict exactly what speed and position a pitcher was going to throw on any given pitch. And when rubber hit the road and he got up to the plate, he found out that all of that doesn't mean shit unless you're also an ace hitter.
He consistently underestimates the Skywalkers, he dismisses and downplays Jade's skill and talents with the Force, and he utterly and completely disregards the danger C'Boath poses both to him, his crews and his control and stability. Basically all of those compound and compile and eventually come back to bite him in the ass.
Except for Legends of the Hidden Temple, apparently. I hope that show is as fantastic as it sounds. Ahmed Best deserves some positivity.
I’m extremely happy for him, although there is...something that’s hard for me to explain about the idea of someone working in a Star Wars vehicle ostensibly without any reference to their prior, much more high-profile work in Star Wars movies. It’s like the elephant in the room will be himself.

His authoritarian tendencies and blind spots around Noghri also come back to bite him. There are a number of places where if he had been more diplomatic and not taken things by force, he would have made some of the non-imperials less likely to turn on him. Leia is probably the person most responsible for his downfall through her choices and diplomacy with key individuals.
Except for Legends of the Hidden Temple, apparently. I hope that show is as fantastic as it sounds. Ahmed Best deserves some positivity.

They can’t not address it, right?
I expect a sly nod to Jar Jar to pop up once or twice, but it doesn't strike me as too unusual. I've watched a lot of Star Trek, though, where the concept of a familiar face popping up as different characters is pretty familiar. I don't even know how many unrelated Trek characters Jeffery Combs has played.
It would definitely be stranger if Best hadn't played a fully digital character. His face and normal voice will basically be new to most viewers.

Silas Carson played Ki-Adi-Mundi and Nute Gunray in the prequel trilogy, so there's precedent for this sort of thing in Star Wars
As long as Ahmed Best doesn't do the Jar-Jar voice all the time I think it'll be fantastic that he's getting another chance to do something cool in Star Wars and not have it be hated. Just be yourself dude, he's probably great.

I feel like Finn is going to end up being the new leader of the Rebellion. It would really complete his arc. Ideally I’d love to see him getting Stormtroopers to desert en masse, it would be a powerful thing to see troopers throwing off their helmets and just leaving.

Almost the entire last movie was about her failing and why*...
*not every aspect of the movie involves her failure. But the themes of Finns failures carry over to the reason for Reys. Specifically in that a failure to act out of love will not produce success. Rey goes to save Kylo because “its what Luke Skywalker did” and not because she was personally invested in his salvation. Luke goes to save his friends and to reconsile with his father.
I like how Abrams reaction to Last Jedi is that it is not what he would have done, but he is ok with it.
I read an interview recently where he said he had an idea of what the overall arc of the trilogy would be back when he was working on TFA and that the events of TLJ did not derail his original ideas, even with Snoke out of the picture. But Carrie's passing did change the plan, as IX would have featured her heavily.

Yeah, it was pretty clear that 7 was Han's sendoff, 8 was Luke's sendoff, and 9 was to be Leia's sendoff.
Yeah, it seems like they intended to dig into each legacy character with each film. The sad part being I'm sure they could have used Leia/Carrie more in the first film, but because they probably only had one film to work with Harrison Ford (probably his only stipulation being he dies/only has to do one). Also it may have meant that Kylo would have killed Leia instead, and I think having Leia around for the last two movies was nice. Her force power reveal is still one of my favorite moments of TLJ.
Rey helping replace Snoke with a young angsty idiot that let the rebels escape because he was too busy attacking a mirage turned out pretty successful. It almost made up for all the dumb shit Poe did in that movie.

edited December 2019
Poe's flaws were clear and bad and resulted in the Resistance being decimated. Finn's flaws were less clear and surrounded in good intentions yet it still resulted in hurting his friends and nearly getting all of them killed. I don't think Rey exhibited any flaws (outside of maybe being too trusting of Kylo?) and even then it resulted in killing Snoke and saving her friends. She needed an actual bad consequence to her actions. Instead, she saves the day, with the Jedi books in hand and really no worse for wear. It annoys me because I wanted more for her. I wanted her to go through what every other leading Force user has gone through except it feels like they are handling her with kid gloves and honestly it feels sexist and belittling that she doesn't get the same kind of challenge and failure and consequence that Anakin and Luke got in their second movies.
I still like and cheer for Rey. I just wanted more for her.
