The facts: My friend's birthday is Tuesday. She loves Broadway. Broadway is closed. She's bummed about it, and even had some plans to see a show on Tuesday per another friend, which is now canceled. She's a reader and I was thinking a nice book about Broadway would be good as a holdover until everything gets back up and running.
I need to find a shippable book. Amazon is preferred but as long as it can get to where I need to send it by Tuesday, I don't care where. I was originally going to get her something but due to all the social distancing and working from home, I won't be able to see her on her Birthday after all.
Recently, I know she loved Hadestown, but I'd like to buy something broader in scope anyway.
But it seems like that's more of a text book. Reviews are positive about its readability, but there's no Kindle version or sample I can check out, as far as I can tell.
If she loves Sondheim, then I would highly recommend "Finishing The Hat" and "Look, I Made A Hat", which covers all of his works from an autobiographical perspective. I own both of these, and they are the pride and joy of my collection.
She probably already owns "Hamilton: The Revolution", but if not... well, that's an option.
If she doesn't know about Forbidden Broadway, she NEEDS to get on the Forbidden Broadway train. Forbidden Broadway is a LONG running off-Broadway musical revue series that parodies current shows on Broadway. The references are very inside-baseball type stuff, which any theater nerd would get. There is also a book for it, which I own: https://www.amazon.com/Forbidden-Broadway-Behind-Mylar-Curtain/dp/B00ANYT004
But if she hasn't listened to Forbidden Broadway, you should get her some Forbidden Broadway CDs instead. The same guy (Gerard Allesandrini) did a Hamilton parody album called "Spamilton", which lampoons Hamilton in particular, but also Broadway in general.
Yeah, when I checked in the morning I was able to get it delivered by Tuesday but by the time I went to finalize my order, the earliest is Thursday. Oh well.
I ordered something anyway. It’ll just be a bit late. The earliest I could get from
Barnes and Noble, at double the total price I paid on Amazon, was Wednesday. Sigh...

Again, no samples, which is irritating.
edit: Actually there are samples, and I'm an idiot!

A similar book came out for RENT back in 1997 (it's a high quality coffee-table-type book):

I can highly recommend Patti LuPone's memoir:

Or Alan Cumming's memoir:

Hope that gives you some ideas!
