"It is with great sadness we can confirm that the actor Sir Ian Holm CBE passed away this morning at the age of 88," his agent said in a statement.

"He died peacefully in hospital with his family and carer," he added.

He was Bilbo

He was Ash

He was Priest Vito Cornelius

He was one of my favourite Token Old Man actors and I'm sad that he's gone.

My wife just put on 5th element in memory.

He was a great actor, and I can't imagine anyone else in the Bilbo Baggins role.

I really want to watch Fellowship of the Ring the other day but didn't bother because it's not on Netflix.

Looks like I'll have to dig the DVD out.

The Guardian has written some nice articles:

Yea I never realized he was Ash. You're not wrong, that's incredible range.

Just rewatched Alien last weekend for the billionth time, and I loved little touches like his annoyed exasperation when Ripley is asking him questions in the lab.

88 is a solid age, but it's sad nonetheless. RIP

I saw him in a hundred things growing up. but the one that really made an impression on me was From Hell.
Dumb fucking movie, but Ian Holm sold the hell out of it and took it from goofy slasher to grand guignol.

It just now occurred to me that the first LOTR trilogy featured performances from two notable Sir Ians.

Sweet Hereafter features a devestating performance in perhaps the saddest fiction movie I've ever seen.

Good. I’m glad he got a thread. Might not stick around for a long time but he deserved it.
