I think I have asked this before in this very thread but I will check in again: y’all got any yakuza movie recommendations, I watched Tokyo Drifter this morning and it whipped ass so I’m in the mood for it
The Yakuza series in general likes to get very poetic about the Yakuza and Kiryu definitely buys into the idealized vision of the honorable and just Yakuza that sticks to the rules. Even though the vast majority of the people he actually interacts with who belong to the Yakuza are greedy shitheads who could care less about any of that. But the series likes to kind of treat it as restoring order to the organization is the goal, and often your final villains are the ones who disrespect the traditions and old ways etc. So in those respects that's equivalent to a happy ending. But it also runs counter to the experiences of all the protaganist/protag adjacent characters who've been yakuza members in that same game. They all got fucked over hard by the same traditional system.
In Yakuza 5, I just did a side quest for a fisherman who took me to his sushi restaurant afterwards.
And by the way, it's a real sushi chain and the fisherman is the real owner who is modeled meticulously in the game.
Japan's, specifically RGG Studio's, in-game product placement is at an insane level.
They have a similar thing in Judgement, where a series of jobs involve helping out the president of a steakhouse chain. Real dude, real restaurant. I'm trying to imagine a game in the west doing the same thing. Death Stranding has the Monster Energy drinks and the cameos with carefully modeled people.

The Ryu Ga Gotoku movie, movie isn't half bad. Specifically the dude who plays Majima just has the time of his life.

this reminds me that while it isn't subbed, the yakuza stage play is all on youtube and stage majima also rules

The Battles Without Honor & Humanity films are essential watching, though they can drag a bit.

Well, I guess this means we're getting Kiryu in English again.

Thank goodness we got the dub actually confirmed!
That alone could easily make this the Yakuza game I enjoy the most. I can just get into games so much better when I can actually understand characters speaking.
And I will definitely just be grabbing the PS4 version. Will still play on PS5 so why the heck not?
I'm on Saejima's part of 5 and I'm getting accosted by thugs literally every 20 seconds or so. It's impossible to get around this town. Is there an item he can get that'll lessen that?

I love 5, and I love Saejima's story, but godDAMN is that particular city annoying
The Triad has drastically underestimated my ability to be good at karaoke and eating food, and I am laying down some HURT
Your opinions have largely lined up with my own, so I’m very curious to see where 6 will land on your list (it’s near the bottom for me).

Going through the series myself I once again reminded how much 0 did for Nishiki.
Like Kiwami did a lot giving him additional flashbacks cause without all that extra characterization he spends a lot of the game people mustache twirl-y levels of a jerk.

I am very much not digging the story. Chock-a-block with deeply obvious misdirects; they're playing a lot of cards face-down, waiting for the big reveals later. Which Yakuza often does, but there are usually enough plates spinning (either multiple characters, or sudden/distracting setpieces, or both) that you can be distracted and let the trick play out. But there's a tighter focus, and it just makes obvious when Kiryu fails to notice an obvious clue or jumps to a wild conclusion. And because it's so obviously fucking-with-you, it's hard to invest emotionally in any of it.
That said, it's still Yakuza, and I'm still enjoying myself overall. Got into a fistfight in maternity ward. Jammed fifty cans of Fancy Feast in my pockets so I can help acquire stray cats for a cafe. Got the last few XP I needed for my dude-throwing ability by slamming three different varieties for 30-year-old whiskey in one sitting and getting a combo bonus. Told myself, "This time, I'm gonna be good at mahjong," and then was still absolute dogshit at mahjong.
I will say that the apparently-requisite-for-every-Yakuza pervy minigame is EGREGIOUSLY pervy, here. Just, real gross.

I still can not get over the end of 4.
Twist on twist on twist on twist.

That cinematography consistency, too.
Yakuza 7 is getting an English dub
Like Judgment, 2 sets of subtitles, one for the English dub and one for Japanese. IGN has more info, including an early cast list (including George Takei?!): https://www.ign.com/articles/yakuza-like-a-dragon-ps5-series-x-english-dub-george-takei-release-date

I really liked the structure of the game, with 4 different protagonists with different perspectives on the city.
And a strange thought entered my head as I was bikemurdering bandits: What kind of sex act is called a "Kamurocho bike ride"?

I do not want to do the Cabaret/Real Estate things at ALL
I just want to find out what happens with Majima, who is very good

Cabaret is good tho
Yeah
Watching Kiryu hunt-and-peck his way through a camgirl chat boiled my skeleton down into gelatin
I’m not entirely sure how to play
Some guys wandered in, I assigned a hostess to their table, and then they were “extremely satisfied” even though there was a frowny face next to them?
they got real jav models in it and a few of them like anri fucking marked out on twitter how excited they were
I gotta be honest I comprehend very little in this sentence
I know what Twitter is, at least
I laughed for a minute straight, no exaggeration
