I got a conundrum.
I finally paid off my student loans! Yay!
I have paid off all my debts except the house.
I can float getting a new Subaru WRX STi. APY for a loan is .9%, which is all but free, honestly, and it's the end of the year so prices are dropping. By my calculations I'd still be a little bit ahead from what I paid for the student loans.
However, I think if I redirect that money towards savings, I could probably pay off my house in ~2 years. It would take a little less than 2 more years past that for me to pay it off at current rate. And saving up the extra money from the house would put me back into buying the next-gen STi. But it's never a good idea to buy the first model year of a new car, so that's like 4-5 years until I would get one. I am not getting any younger either. And my DD is a 1997 Honda Civic which does not spark any joy, that the rust will eat away and I don't see it lasting another 4 years.
Logically, I can justify either buying it or not. Emotionally, I totally want the new car.
I am terribly conflicted, and not sure what the best thing to do is.
What if you split the difference? Something more fun than the Civic, but not necessarily as expensive as the Sti. Maybe a used WRX under warranty or something. You can have a car you like without necessarily dropping $30,000.
I’m in a similar situation right now (mortgage only), though I still have 6-7 years to go. I really tried to go super thrifty and stick with an econobox, but ultimately I was miserable. I have about $3,500 into my Trans Am and don’t regret a penny of it, even if that’s a couple more house payments I could be ahead.
EDIT: Actually, I almost never suggest this, but what about a lease? The payment would likely be low enough not to throw off your house payoff goals, and you could buy it out at the end if you wanted.

Ehhhh, if you're gonna do it, commit, get the biggest and baddest you can, I think.
Commit and go hell-for leather, and get that damned mortgage paid down and eradicated - then you're safe and secure, your house is yours, nobody can take it away from you.
Then, reward yourself and go hard in the paint on the car. Get all the factory special hop-up parts and the options you want, get a colour that you think is just absolutely shit-hot but might not have a great resale value. Make it YOUR car, and keep it forever.
I think you’re in a “no bad option” space. Mathematically, it’s probably way better to finish the house. The good apr for the cars will always show up again.
Short term mentally, the car is going to be some sweetness.
Long term mentally, only agonizing over this decision is going to have any affect.
Took the new RAV for a run over the weekend. About 1200km all said and done and it went great! Very happy with the purchase.
Some fuckwit opened their door into us outside a shopping centre and dinged the paint but other than that, it was perfect
It looks like your RAV just drove out of the ad and into your driveway. Good to see it being used the way they are marketed, when so many of the actual customers were oldies who just found it easier to sit straight into something SUV height instead of climbing up into a LandCruiser or down into a sedan.

If you're talking about buying a new car instead of paying off the house, I would pay off the house.
But given the option, I would look seriously into something used. See if I can't find something that's old enough to be cheap but still in really good shape, that's also fun to drive/own. That way I have a more fun car and still pay the house off in 2.5 years, and I'm less rushed about the process.
And then drop the cash on some new hotness.

The way I see it paying off the house is a double win. Rather than buying the car new and maybe being upside down on the loan instantly, you wait the 2 years to pay off the house and then buy the exact same car used with what, 20,000 miles? for 30% off.

I decided not to get it.
The price was cheap listed on AutoTrader because that's the best price. And the cheapest we could get it down to was more than what I wanted to pay. I hate gap insurance, and that it's a thing. Extended warranty I'm kind of iffy on, and was willing to skip.
And then they offered a lease, and that would have made the price, but I really really don't want to lease it.
So I guess I'll do as everyone suggested, and save the money and pay off the house. And then get the next gen STI or whatever else cool car is around in 3 years.
Oh shit it's the endurance car not the IROC series car that's even cooler
It's the escort car though, that 305 is probably a dead stock throttle body injection unit, so 220 horsepower at best.
An LS7 swap would make it sing, though...
According to the documentation in the ad it's 400hp.

I see where it says the engine has port injection (not the stock TBI), but I can't find where it says 400 horsepower. I hope it does! That's a LOT of power to screw out of a naturally aspirated 305!
It's in one of the pictures.
Also, if that's 400hp when it was new in 1988, that could be like 400 or 200 by now, no-one would know until you stuck it on a dyno

It's probably good that I didn't see this until now because I have experience with this sort of decision (Not quite as stark, but), and I decided to go all in on buying a new car. It's far more than I should have spent, but I have zero regrets, at all.
I bought this is the summer of 2018 and still feel like I got it yesterday:
this escaped my attention initially, but Mazda is making restoration parts for the NA miata now.... and..i have an NA miata.... and it needs parts. hmm... yes........
maybe a little project now that the weather is cooling off

Is it a Mazda?
Yes->Put a triple rotor in it!
No->Put an LS in it!
Close, but not quite.
Tiny lightweight Mazdas need Rotarys, but something bigger like an RX8 needs an LS swap.
And any Chevy really needs either a Barra or an Aluminator in it just to rustle the jimmies of purists.
As for Fords?
Put Toyota engines in them!
Toyotas? Nissan engines!
Nissans? Fuck I dunno, player's choice - go hard.
I'm just imagining your bog-standard Chevy guy just completely melting at the mere thought of a Ford engine in there.
Out of all the really feral brand-loyal guys I've ever interacted with in the car scene, the Mopar boys were the worst. I met a father and son at a car show once who were the third and fourth generation of a family who steadfastly refused to even ride in any other brand. Ring for a taxi and a Ford shows up? Ignore it and call a different taxi company. Going out with some friends but they don't own a Mopar? Take your own car along as well.
Somebody swapped an R35 motor into a C6 a few years back and rustled some jimmies, lol. Rob Dahm has been doing the same with a rotary powered one too.
There's John Cadogan on Youtube, but he doesn't actually formally review that many cars, and is capable of being a PRIME fuckwit (like saying dumb shit like "I love ALL my viewers, even the men. In a non-*f-slur* way." I.e, an old man trying to be an edgelord).

Ok but where does this fit in? Because it rules and I want to see some swaps come out of this package:

I am so absolutely ready for electric crate motors like this.
Oh yeah that's not the point at all, I just think it'd be fucking hilarious to buy a C8 Corvette and slam an Aluminator in it.

Kinda depends on what you prioritize. These days I feel you need to aggregate pretty heavily to get an even take.
