There's nothing quite like sitting there while some jackass makes you sit through enough triggers to put 445 Scutes on the board, and then watching them concede immediately to a Mystic Subdual as soon as your turn begins. (I had enough flying damage to kill them and the mystic subdual removed reach from their only creature capable of blocking a flyer)
I thought for sure it was going to crash out before I could get that turn, and just started cackling when it actually got through all of those triggers and kept going.
I had something similar happen the other day as my opponent made 500 scutes and was going "good game" while the triggers were resolving and then I just passed to my turn and played extinction event on odds.
I lost a game to infinite Scutes because they also had Purphoros to give them haste. I was just staring at the Massacre Wurm in my hand saying "next time, baby...".
My wife played omnath ramp for a bit and added a couple scute swarms to it, and was tickled when she machine gunned everything with terror of the peaks and a pile of scute ammo
Since everyone seems to play mill now, I ended up building a Yorion deck with my own milling built in. Main win-con is Dance of the Manse to bring back a bunch of stuff to trigger mill effects. Having the 80 card deck gives me more time to deal with being milled, and the board wipes take care of aggro. Still have to put the tutor artifact in the deck so I can go get pieces when I need.
Because if you're going to attempt to squeeze that big black monster into your slot you will need to be able to take at least 12 inches or else you're going to have a bad time...

I've been playing the 4c Midrange deck from the Grand Finals since it seems much better with Omnath out of the picture and it's a very rewarding deck to play, but also quite tiring. I keep having runs where I queue into nice quick matches against Rakdos Pyromancer and then queue up for a second match since the first one was so fast and end up against (a) a midrange mirror or (b) U/W control. Those matchups are really interesting but also exhausting.
No Standard deck yet. Still wanna see how the meta shakes out before I burn any of my precious 62 rare WCs.

Makes me think Scute Swarm GB with Gary/The black ETB deal damage witch and mutating Dirge Bat/other black would be fun.
The thing to remember about scute swarm is that it's not good. Yeah, it can be fun to make a million copies of something, but once you start hitting a billion triggers the opponent often will either just concede or they won't because they have an answer in hand.
Humor can be dissected as a frog can, but dies in the process.

If it's an ETB deck with a large swarm going- what answer is there? You'd need a boardwipe that's an instant or a way to give it flash. Or a way to prevent all non-combat damage with flash, or get a shitton of life. None of those are easy. Straight non muated no supporting cards swarm, yeah. They're all 1/1s sooo...

If it's an ETB deck with a large swarm going they've already won the game and that's fine. :P
If "An ETB deck" means "has terror of the peaks", you hit it with a removal spell and don't care about the scutes. Or win because they're durdling instead of beating you up. Either way works!

Hey guys I have a mystery to solve
Why can't I activate Erebos here to sac my Archon? Is the game bugged or did I fuck up somehow?

I quite literally never noticed that line of text about the pig.
Pretty sure my opponent didn't either.

It's a pretty good card just for its stats and ETB (not playable, but good) but that ability makes it an excellent hateboar.
I quite literally never noticed that line of text about the pig.
Pretty sure my opponent didn't either.
It's one of the main reasons it gets slotted into decks.
It's why it made a showing at recent tournaments to counter sacrificing effects.

Right.
My opponent also had just played his ape to have it fight with my archon, killing the ape.
I don't think he quite realized how the shit interacted.

The most hilarious thing right now is how many scute decks I'm seeing in brawl.
And I'm more than happy to let them make a billion fuckers while I build a better board and hold like, three boardwipes in hand.

I didn't realize how much some of the old revised -> rath block cards I have are worth now, historic formats blew up in the intervening years. Now if only I could actually get them back from my mother's ex's place, and he hasn't been responsive for uh...a while. Fortunately he's also supremely lazy so even though it's been a couple years he's probably not even gone upstairs to our room heh.
Too broke to really get invested in paper magic all over again, but in the meantime it would be fun picking up some jumpstart packs to play with my wife and kid (they're all also much simpler mechanically, a positive for the kiddo). Wonder when the next printing ships out, I sure as heck am not paying the marked up prices.
That's why I'm looking into it again. Son likes the card games, but I'm not playing pokemon or yugio (sp?).

Yugi Oh is a pretty poorly designed game IMO.
Pokemon is at least better than Hearthstone.

What's wrong with Pokemon? :P
Aside the trainer change so you can't go gambler gambler prof oak bill bill.. and draw your deck anymore.
You've got Keyforge if you want something similar to jumpstart, but with more randomness in the decks and so less balance and inherent synergy.
There's also the MLP game but it also suffers from Magic's Mythics are the best.
Otherwise you have boxed card games like Smashup which is Jumpstart exactly, but with the different halves all in one box.
Or deck construction games like Dominion or Ascension (aka not-Dominion), but they might be a bit too complex for young kids.

Hey look everyone, its the No Fun Police
I dunno what about having an Athreos deck where I steal your scute swarm is "No Fun" police
It's very fun.
For me.
I've been joyously exploiting the detailed explanation of trigger orders I got from admanb to beat Scute Swarm decks by having my creatures die against theres. I find nothing more satisfying than a giant swarm of scute mutants coming over slaughtering my gaggle of 1/1's and then the resulting triggers killing their controller.
It makes for a hilarious image. Hundreds of bug beasts just suddenly stopping and going, "Ah, it's a fair cop gov, the boss is dead. We're off to the pub" after winning their fights.

I don't know if it's the same now but in the original canon they actually vanish from existence as soon as their controller dies, because the massive power wielded by the Planeswalker was the only thing anchoring them to whatever plane you happen to be fighting on.

I just won a game because a dude never realized he could activate his shadowspear to remove the indestructible part of my erebos, so he kept swinging and i kept giving him lifelink until he finally just conceded randomly while being up 45 life.

Just had a game where my opponent had 400 triggers on the stack.
I hit pass all and went and made and ate dinner, got back and it was still going.

I'm not knocking Pokemon or Yuhgio, I'm just saying I am not going to be playing them.
I actually have a set of the Keyforge, he liked it, but I got kinda bored of the same cards every time. Might just pick up a couple of starter decks and go from there.

The concept of Keyforge is super interesting. The secondary market for decks that are explosively powerful is offputting, even with handicap mechanics. I prefer magic's ever shifting secondary market where you can spend $20 on a card one week, sell it for $40 the next week, regret everything when it shoots up to $80 the week after and then exasperated sigh when it gets banned.

I thought tonight's Really Bad Idea was going to be unworkable, but it happened in 5 games.
A W/B creatureless control deck with the goal of winning with a single shot from Kaya, Orzhov Usurper. Lots of removal that exiles things, but the deck got much better after the first two games when I realized I could worry less about exiling everything right away and put Ashiok, Dream Render in to just exile anything in graveyards that had been destroyed instead. I actually won one game by milling with multiple Ashioks without intending to. Oops :P Anyway, game 5 had Gideon of the Trials locking down big threats while Profane Procession exiled one creature per turn. I think there were a couple Extinction Events in there somewhere. Ashiok milled a bunch of cards and when Kaya hit the board they had 26 cards in exile. I was stupidly lucky that they had nothing that could remove her, and 2 turns later she zapped them for 28 points.
I'm going to mentally file that away under "I can't believe that worked even once" and get really annoyed with myself sometime in the future when I forget what deck it is and accidentally bust it out while looking for a change of pace.

I really wish I could find a reasonably priced box of Jumpstart packs. Honestly the fact that Jumpstart was such an overwhelming slam dunk has spoiled me for the rest of the years content!!
I am...increasingly certain I'm losing newly acquired cards. I got my first crawling barrens last night, which I recall because I had just fought a colorless deck and blew up two really big ones my opponent had built up.
And today out of a pack I got my 'first' crawling barrens, and sure enough, only one in inventory. Its far from the only time I've thought it's happened, but there was always more time between it happening and so more possibility of faulty remembrance.

Yeah, that's what I was playing in standard last year.
Found it was pretty slow though.
so some guy was running Allure of the Unknown as what I guess is their idea of Escape in to the Wilds, except it also drew a second Allure which I get to cast for free. So he's tapped out and got one creature and I just re-filled my whole hand. in other words <Nice!>
