I guess it's more for like...people who don't have hot rocks or an oven? Lots of people have shitty apartments or dorm rooms or whatever. I mean, most likely, someone just went, "hey, I bet this would work," and just fuckin' put a plate in the microwave and hoped for the best.
Also, in no means poor-shaming here, but if I had to choose between a microwave and an electric hot plate I'd prolly choose the latter, sans an oven. They're half the price and far more versatile.
