    "6 / 2(1+2)" is just a shitty way of writing "6 divided by 2(1+2)".

    x = (1+2)
    x = 3

    y = 2x
    y = 6

    z = 6 / 2(1+2)
    z = 6 / y
    z = 1

    The Court should kick it back to the lower Court and get the Plaintiff to write it unambiguously.

    This is just objectively not correct!

    3 * 1+2 does not equal 9 just because the 1 and 2 have no spaces between them!

    Exclamations!!

    No, it's a shitty way of writing (6 / 2) * (1 + 2) because it makes people think it's 6 / (2(1+2))!

    Like, my first reaction was also to interpret it as being 1, because it's designed to confuse. But that doesn't make the wrong interpretation correct, it just illustrates that our brains take certain shortcuts that aren't always correct.

    I once posted a similar image on Facebook, grumbling about similar virality attempts.

    My post was public. I woke up to 200 comments worth of randos arguing.

    The problem with that statement is the ambiguity of the “divide by” symbol which could reasonably be interpreted in two ways.

    It’s just a badly written problem

    All memetic math fights start with something that Feels Right and something that is actually right.

    (though in this case "actually right" is completely arbitrary. There is no "truth" to mathematical notation. This distinguishes it from e.g. Monty Hall, where the objective answer (2/3rds car) feels so much wronger than the incorrect answer (1/2 car))

    I'd start with the first Theorem before I moved onto the sequels to avoid spoilers.

    By the way, the Monty Hall problem gives you a 50% chance regardless of your choice because all other variables no longer matter at the point of decision.

    Monty Hall becomes more intuitive if you do this version:

    There are 100 doors, with one prize and 99 chainsaw murderhobos. Pick a door.

    OK, you picked door X. Now, let me open 98 of the other doors, to reveal 98 chainsaw murderhobos!

    Would you like to switch to the last unknown door?

    Fermat, in the margins: I can't be bothered to prove this, but it's definitely true.

    Mathematicians: agreed.

    I find montehall to be way more understandable if you change it from 3 doors to 100 doors, and go: Choose 1 door of 100. Now we open up 98 wrong ones.

    2 are left, do you switch?

    I find explaining that to people is way easier.

    That said, I get why 2/3 car works (I'm mentally parsing it as: you had 1/3 shot of choosing right to start, so when you're given the swap option, since there are only 2 options, and your choice had a 1/3 chance of being right, the other option must be 2/3 chance of being right), but it is weird.
