    The Wisconsin envelope/ballot thing.

Is that written policy in the state about how it should work?

Because that seems obviously blatantly violating of any number of constitutional rights. Random ballots being thrown out because an envelope was wrong? One person loses their vote because someone else didn't fill out the envelope right?

How is that something that isn't being challenged the living fuck out of in court right now?

why guess would be because it has as yet never mattered

Sure, but that doesn't explain why it was written that way to begin with.

It's deeply entrenched that voting should be anonymous. So once the votes are counted, there's obviously no way to connect a signature with a given ballot. On the other hand, mistakes can be made - people judging the envelopes could accept ballots that should have been rejected, either deliberately or accidentally, and therefor alter the vote. And since you can draw a strong correlation between location and voting preference, this can deliberately sway an election - if you know a precinct goes 80% for Democrats, then allowing ten extra votes is likely to produce around +8 votes for Biden. Statistically, throwing out 10 votes at random would approximately counteract that.

Looking at it that way, it makes a certain amount of sense. Obviously the ideal way to deal with it would be to come to full agreement about the envelopes before opening them and counting any votes, but that would eliminate any possibility of a recount.

And in 99% of elections, throwing out a few ballots at random isn't going to affect who actually wins the election, but it does serve to ensure the legitimacy of the count, that the number of ballots counted is equally to the number of ballots legitimately cast.

When the number of rejected votes does make a difference, that's the sort of situation that (in non Presidential races) can lead courts to declare the election invalid and order a special election.

Bernstein names 21 Republican senators who privately expressed contempt for Trump

The veteran Watergate reporter Carl Bernstein has publicly named 21 Republican senators he says have “repeatedly expressed extreme contempt for [Donald] Trump and his fitness” for office.

As Trump continued to try to subvert the results of a presidential election he clearly lost to Joe Biden, Bernstein said on Twitter he was “not violating any pledge of journalistic confidentially [sic]”.

His information, he said, came from “colleagues, staff members, lobbyists [and] White House aides”.

    Then he named names.

They were: Rob Portman (Ohio), Lamar Alexander (Tennessee), Ben Sasse (Nebraska), Roy Blunt (Missouri), Susan Collins (Maine), Lisa Murkowski (Alaska), John Cornyn (Texas), John Thune (South Dakota), Mitt Romney (Utah), Mike Braun and Todd Young (Indiana), Tim Scott (South Carolina), Rick Scott and Marco Rubio (Florida), Chuck Grassley (Iowa), Richard Burr (North Carolina), Pat Toomey (Pennsylvania), Martha McSally (Arizona), Jerry Moran and Pat Roberts (Kansas) and Richard Shelby (Alabama).

press finally naming names like 3.5 years too late but here we are

I honestly would have guessed it'd be double that number.

But what isn't surprising is the names. Lots of familiar names there! Lots of people who will momentarily clutch their pearls at this or that behavior or activity, then immediately get in line when it comes to votes or letting McConnell rule by actively not ruling.

I see "21 Republican senators who have "repeatedly expressed extreme contempt for Trump and his fitness" and I read "21 Republican senators who are more disingenuous than their outright fascist colleagues because they say one thing than do another, consistently". *Romney being the only partial standout, but as mentioned by others, has somewhat earned a footnote; it's unfortunate that footnote comes with its own footnote of "however, still got in line when it mattered, except for that one time"

Romney is the only name on that list that risked anything at any point to do the right thing.

And I hate having to commend Romney for anything, but for everything else about him, he supported impeachment, and he marched with BLM this summer. He has, annoyingly, earned his footnote.

He didn't risk all that much. He tried kissing the ring to get picked for Secretary of State and when that didn't work he retreated to running for Senate in a state where he was already extremely popular and the president wasn't.

I always assumed that Cruz, Romney, Christie and the like backed Trump because they can read where the power is in their electorates and as political creatures want to stay relevant. They support Trump where they have to, but not as fawning as Trump probably would like.

Graham always seemed way, way more than that. I can't believe that Graham's almost desperate support of every Trump bottom line is less about reelection and more about Trump having something compromising on him.

Then there are the Trump creatures group, like Gaetz and Nunez, who are both so deep in Trump's crimes that their own livelihoods depend on his success now.

I don't have the full context just yet but there's some noise going on with lawyer Twitter about Trump's representation having requested an expedited review of something and then missed the deadline for filing it, but they somehow got to file it late anyway. Rudy Giuliani isn't listed as representation in it so either they forgot or they're pulling him out already.

Oh and there it is, this is a lawyer that Popehat is retweeting. This is from a few hours ago:
So let's update where we stand.

Third Circuit today ordered Trump to file his brief today and the other side to file theirs tomorrow afternoon. What exactly Trump will argue is still unclear but it appears their strategy is to get back to district court and get discovery.
And this is from 12 minutes ago:
I suspect it's about to get bounced for non-compliance with the rules but we'll see.
So they're very clumsily filing an appeal with the 3rd circuit and already fucking it up unless they are given a LOT of lenience by the people in charge of the process.

Looks more like calculated self-preservation to me. His only hope and/or his marching orders were to win or at least tie up/delay things; if he can't do that, he has nothing to gain (and everything to lose) by going on record and falling on his sword. Instead, he's gonna cover his ass and hope that both Trump and the MI AG forget about him.

I saw that Guardian article on Bernstein’s “list” earlier and thought who fucking cares?

The GOP talking shit on Trump behind closed doors has been a thing since before he was in office, and the truth is it didn’t matter. Literally two of them actually did something, Amash and Romney. The rest publicly kissed the ring hoping it’ll keep the Eye of Sauron off them, but we know it won’t save them. Trump is only loyal himself and at best, kissing Trump’s ass just buys you time before you see the undercarriage of a bus.

Yeah like name dropping the Senators isn't a big deal. As someone else said, their actions enabling all this horse shit speak louder than their private misgivings.

BUT there is that one sweet nugget where Trump and his supporters will feel attacked and stop cooperating with the GOP. Hopefully this feeds the conspiracy theories building about the Georgia special election and alt-right Republicans are convinced to not vote.

Then there are the Trump creatures group, like Gaetz and Nunez, who are both so deep in Trump's crimes that their own livelihoods depend on his success now.

Or perhaps Graham is just a natural toadie/lickspittle.

There was that article awhile back talking about how it's an open secret among Congress that Graham has a thing for male prostitutes, and there's an unspoken rule in Washington that you don't out people for that stuff.

A rule that the Trump and his cronies would probably have zero qualms breaking if it suited their purposes.

gonna be honest, i couldn't give less of a shit about the integrity of Republicans who hate Trump but won't speak up

naming them is delicious and only results in one thing

    aiming Trump at them
Yeah like name dropping the Senators isn't a big deal.

Considering that the only Georgians I know that are discussing it are registered Republicans, I think it has some legs in this regard.

We'll see, as someone said previously in the thread I'll only really believe that GA Republican voters will fuck themselves over is going to be deeper in December. But any own goals will be appreciated.

    She’s about to be fired.

Still doubt Trump concedes, though it’d be best for the country if he does. Probably why he won’t too.

Let's see how many agencies cooperate. And of those, how many see their heads/acting heads fired and replaced with... I dunno, probably Rudy Giuliani at this point.

He only cares about what he thinks is best for him, fuck anyone and everything else.

It’s about damn time the GSA does it’s job. I guess now that they’ve run out of excuses to hide behind they will begrudgingly do the right thing.

For possibly the first time in five years, I've actively looked at Trumps twitter account and it appears that Trump hasn't tweeted today at all.

I wonder if they were waiting on Michigan, or if it's just a coincidence.
