Many people are saying I'm a bitch, I'm a lover, I'm a child, I'm a mother, and that's, that's great folks. The fake news says oh she's not a sinner or saint, that's terrible, but we don't believe that, do we?
I remember the thing she's talking about and in my memory it was contentious for all of a month.
summary notes from elsewhere:
-The parasocial relationship the audience has with the bros
-The atmosphere at live shows (people telling jokes/stories/promoting themselves when at the mic)
-People mad at the representation in the graphic novels (but explains that blew over)
-Taako backlash (his race, his taco quest)
-People shitting on Travis for various reasons ("performativity" of wokeness of his brand), the infamous Among Us stream was mentioned
-Amnesty- victim of expectations
- The increase of D&D podcasts, especially those from people that aren't just creating content but enjoy playing/know D&D super well
-Graduation- never felt like it worked (Travis admitted to this as well), bad D&D mechanics
-Only the non-binary characters are introduced with their pronouns (a sense of "othering"), a lot are misgendered at least once
-The Tribe of Centaurs race issue (how it felt like they were coded as Indigenous People)
-Commitment- The portrayal of Kardala (violent, dumb, war-like, eating raw meat)
-Lack of fan content for Graduation
-r/TheAdventureZone drama (negativity, over moderation)
-r/TAZCircleJerk growing in popularity
-Bingus (and the barrage of pointless NPCs in Graduation)
-Drug use/consent in Graduation by one of the teachers (missed the name, I haven't listened to Graduation)
-TAZ upload rate compared to other Play podcasts (while it has always been the same upload schedule, other more well-thought out podcasts are uploaded more often)- she only mentioned that this became a frustration in Graduation because when you have to wait 2 weeks for something that's disappointing, you aren't going to be very happy
-Among Us stream mentioned again. Travis baby voice. Yelling at people on the stream. Oh man. She showed a clip from the stream. It's so bad. So awkward.
-Travis on twitter (a"no homo" Harry Styles thread (not my words))
-Vice article about TAZ and the McElroys (https://www.vice.com/.../everyone-loves-the-mcelroys-so...)
-Not just a family, a business
-TAZ ad for Upstart (issue of personal loans), Jess Thorn's response
-MaxFun drive (only hit half their goal this year, lowered their goal on the website, extended the drive)
-Again with the parasocial relationships and especially the family encouraging this
I'm gonna be honest, they kinda look like balloons.
Why all these guys gotta have a skull in frame? What is it they think this communicates?
Skulls are bad ass. People need to know not to fuck with me because I'm a skull collector. Every year I brave the crowds at the spirit halloween store and buy another plastic skull.

What timeframe are we talking about, because... holy fuck I had no knowledge of any of this. I feel like I"m living in a bubble where I know nothing of the wider internet.
As a general fan of the McElroys (minus Travis, he really does suck from pretty much every direction) I fully acknowledge that they have some pretty major issues, but the degree to which a lot of people choose to constantly negatively engage with them is frankly pretty goddamn unhealthy, and that includes a few people on this forum
I recommend Sarah Z.'s other videos as well, like the one about the truly singular Onceler fandom. They're all a bit long but they tend to do some interesting working through of things that goes beyond just haha how ridiculous and/or here's a list of the bad stuff about this fan community. A good amount of consideration about why you see the behavior you see from folks who share this interest and just intense interests in general for good and ill.
I mean also there's a lot of like... wow, fan communities are wild. But that's just because for real fan communities get so intense so quickly it isn't possible to summarize them in a neutral manner.
you know, I don't think the McElroys are ultimately that interesting as either a success or as a "fall from grace," story, and the opening of the Sarah Z video where she talks about how the fanbase used to be chill isn't uh...I don't think that's accurate
I only know they exist because people here mention them a lot. They have a podcast about videogames or something? Idk. I've never heard anyone outside this forum mention them.

Two things:
1. Hikki is *still* doing music?!
2. Does she age?
Example:. This music video is from 20 years ago!
