Hey, in Aria of Sorrow in the Advance Collection, in the collection game menu (not the in-game one) there's an option for some tool/toggle (I don't have it open atm, sorry) for souls. Does anyone know what this does? Does it just turn off collecting souls or something?
If the gadget is on, everytime you kill an enemy there's a pop-up on the right side of the screen that indicates whether you've gotten that enemy's soul yet.
Harmony has a similar gadget that lets you know whether you've found all the special items in an area, and Circle has one that indicates what the enemy might drop.
Oh, ok, thanks, that helps. I noticed the popup things, it's actually super useful! Good to know.
Personally I don't care if they iron out the timeline.
Honestly, if anything, I'm rather fond of the complete clusterfuck it is. It's almost its own character.
They certainly don't need to go back and try to reestablish everything again, and make it more convoluted though. I think a jump to the future is perfectly fine, because the nature of the castle itself allows for it to be almost irrelevant what the year is outside of it. However, I do think that there's a lot of people who would not be thrilled if they went Jason X on the series.
Hell, don't tell us the year. Who cares? Leave it up to our imagination. Is it Vampire Hunter D post apocalyptic? Is it slotted in between other games? Who knows!
I just want a new game, and before they announced Metroid Dread I was fairly content with both Metroid and Castlevania being series that were functionally "done", because largely, they both have enough great stuff that if they never did another one, it'd be a bummer, but it's also fine. But seeing that even Nintendo could step back and say "how can we make this beloved thing work today?" and seemingly (there's still a chance it sucks, but it sure doesn't look like it), makes me also hanker for something original, yet familiar, from Konami. Bloodstained might be the best we get, which hey, that's fine, it was great. Still, there's something about Castlevania that feels like it needs to be respected and carried on.
Unfortunately I can't shake the feeling that what we're going to see is a battle royale microtransaction FPS. :rotate:
I kinda really want a Castlevania game that kicks off a split from the original timeline, and then just goes wild. Post apocalypse world where Dracula is never defeated in Castlevania 3. A sci-fi future where Soma becomes the next Dracula and you have to kill him in, like, the year 30XX and the castle is all tech/medieval/organic structures. An alternate 1691 where Sonia Belmont instead of Simon Belmont travels to take out the resurrected Dracula. A game where Gabriel Belmont must travel to fight his childhood friend, Mathias Cronqvist, who has laid claim to the title of Lord Dracula, and partway through that alternate history jams right up against the original character of Leon Belmont's timeline and the two Belmonts must work to fix the timeline from their own ends but doing so will doom Gabriel to become the Dracula in his world (or does it?). And all of this because the Castle and existence of Dracula's very soul is like, I dunno, shown to shear through time splintering into alternate realities or some MacGuffin bullshit like that. The splintering doesn't matter so much how it happens than that it's centered on the weirdness inherent in a series based around combining every monster movie together in a mish-mash.
Like, take new takes, remix old ideas, just go freaking buckwild. Alternate history that entire series up. No changes intended to the original timeline; more of a constant "what if" being asked in the developer's meetings.
See? That all sounds great. I said "iron out" but I mostly meant "fill out." There's so much shit they can do with the core conceit that they don't even need to stretch to make the idea fun.

I don’t need this to be Castlevania any more, but I had this idea that I keep tinkering with in my head because I just think it works.
Whenever the castle is banished, Dracula curses the child of Belmont to experience a terrible nightmare that draws their soul into the void. They must overcome the nightmare castle in order to wake up (and eventually continue the bloodline in time for the next summoning of the castle for real).
So you pick an era after each game in the series, make a Belmont and just go for it.
I wonder what the thoughtful way of dealing with the event level 8 boss is. Just letting him scoot by the first time and then nuking him twice after he passes? Surtr has a slightly more forceful way of handling the problem, just beating him up at spawn and then finishing the job on her 2nd deployment once he's passed by the choke point.

Having all three of the GBA games together so that you can play them all back to back emphasizes both how much better and how much shorter Aria is than the other two.

Went up to Storm King today and decided to try leaving my camera at home so I could test out the new iPhone. Pretty impressed with what it managed shooting in RAW.

Hell, New Jersey, it said on the letter. Delivered without comment. So be it!
Also that title is bullshit because this strat is super flawed but if you just add an extra vanguard/defender it's fine. (boss almost always blows up all my guys at the end when he dies)
@Warlock82 I had the same problem so I modified it to finish the boss off on the bottom lane where he isn't close to my core blockers.
The tanky casters were the part of the level I had the most issue with, I didn't have a duelist strong enough to take them on with no healing.
Yeah, I was hesitant at first to add more because the trim wording was a little confusing (I assume it meant don't get blown up more than twice? But I'm so used to trims being "bring less people"), but once I put Siege in as an extra operator I just plopped her down in the hole that got made when he blew up. Made the map reliably farmable
But killing him down there would probably have worked fine :P

It's straight up amazing how fast everything greened up again. Our lawn went from dry, crackly and brown to soft, squishy and green in the span of a week and about 2 inches of rain.

Yeah I just did Aria again, and I forgot how short it is.
I mean, it's crazy short.
Each section of the castle feels way smaller than I remember, or think they were in other games. I don't know how true that is, though, it just felt smaller.
Also really easy.
I thought about doing a new game+ to collect the extra items, but forgot they take away the boss/ability souls, and once you get the Panther, you can't go back to how slow it is without it.
If they ever remake the DS ones, they should probably remove the touchscreen nonsense (removing ice blocks, drawing runes after boss battles to fully beat them)

I believe the megaman x collection removed/reworked some similar touchscreen crap for the ds games in it, didn’t it? So if M2 does the Castlevania ds collection hopefully they can do the same.

Portrait of Ruin is actually my favorite of the DS games. Definitely the most fun.
I really like Portrait and Order both. Those might even be my favorite games in the whole series.
Aria of Sorrow is damn good, but it's almost too easy. I've beaten every boss so far on my first attempt with really no fear of death. I'm not asking for Souls combat, but a bit more challenge would be nice.
I have to say Portrait hard mode is kind of badly tuned so far. Where, because just about everything kills you in the same 2 or 3 hits, the most terrifyingly difficult enemies are... bats and ghosts.

Yeah I remember playing it for the first time on Wii U and thinking this. It's a shame because the game is fantastic but it's over so fast.
(I blame Circle and Harmony for that btw.. I bought both, they were fun, but not exactly SotN.. after Harmony I was just like, I don't feel I need to play the third one... too bad, cuz it was actually much much better.. haha.. I think I realized my mistake when I picked up Dawn of Sorrow but by then it was kinda too late)

That was Order of Ecclesia Hard mode too. Or Max Level 1 mode.

Order of Ecclesia hard mode was awesome though, as it also changed the patterns and attacks of almost all monsters and bosses. Completely changed the game, even if it was a bit too difficult for everyone to be able to enjoy.

Yeah Order of Ecclesia's hard mode was way too hard.
Yeah my issue is, all the fearsome hard-hitting monsters in Portrait are appropriately much easier to dodge. But in hard mode, bats/ghosts hit about the same, which were designed as nuisance chip damage in normal. So its perverse when those things are far more intimidating than any boss. And this isn't even using level limits...
Hit my first difficult obstacle tonight in Aria of Sorrow. The headhunter boss. Phase 3 stopped me dead in my tracks. The lizard with its super erratic movement and long reach has completely kicked my ass.

Evening sun was really nice, casted some long shadows.
The newt was doing an incredibly convincing job of pretending to be dead, but on close inspection you could see its little throat moving.

The boss is a gigantic "just use Surtr" button if you have her.

The DS. So no.
It was DS. It was also rereleased on Wii U Virtual Console. So it's basically not easily available.
