2000 case jump from yesterday in NSW.

Still no mask mandate, QR code’s only mandatory for hospital and retail. Also the government is going to mail everyone free rapid antigen tests? Those aren’t cheap, so I’m guessing they will be sending them only to wealthy postcodes.

the ACT is among the world's gold standards for vaccination so seeing how Omicron goes there should be big lessons for any state government paying attention.

Unvaccinated-by-choice French backpacker somehow gets into WA on Dec 12 an hour before we upgraded Qld to a higher risk category, thus didn't require test, proof of vaccination, or isolation, and he's now been clubbing around Perth for two weeks while infectious. Fucking excellent.
Why are unvaccinated-by-choice people allowed into Australia at all

Looks like he has Delta at least, doesn't seem to be Omicron. Worse for him, better for us, and I don't really care about him.

Well, now that we’re back. 22k cases in NSW yesterday, thankfully down to 18k today. Given the estimate of 25k by the end of January, we will probably exceed it weeks earlier.
If you want to go by hospitalisations like the government wants, we hit 1,000 today. Doubled in 5 days.
I’m sure when that number gets too high, they will tell us to only look at ICU admissions.
We’ve seemingly run out of rapid antigen tests, as most places are sold out with ‘we don’t know when we’re getting more’ signs. The governments free rapid tests (lol we’re not getting them) aren’t coming yet. PCR testing facilities are closing before 12 most days because they don’t have enough testing kits.

If the case numbers make it look like we're doing a bad job, look at the hospitalizations.
If the hospitalizations make it look like we're doing a bad job, look at the ICU admissions.
If the ICU admissions make it look like we're doing a bad job, look at the ventilated patients.
If all the numbers make it look like we're doing a bad job, how good's the cricket?

6.5% around a week ago, 1.73% two weeks ago, with comparable testing numbers.
I don't recall seeing it ever go higher than 1-1.5% during the worst of the Delta outbreaks.

It isn't really thankfully down to 18. That's a big fat false number.
The case numbers can no longer be trusted because they're driving people away from getting tested and have arbitrarily narrowed the definition of a close contact specifically to reduce the case numbers. RAT tests are also not reported to the government. So if someone gets a positive on one and decides not to get a pcr test, they go missing from the data.
It's pretty likely we are up to 30k or more in real numbers.
Asymptomatic cases are about 30-40% of total cases. So, basically, for all case numbers from now on, you might as well add 30%.
Oh yeah an we couldn't keep up with real numbers. The highest we had before they changed the definition, Chant had already come out and said "yeah nah its probably more like 25k, testing isn't keeping up with real numbers"

and even if it were an accurate number, once the numbers get this large, the variance day to day doesn't really mean anything - you need a systematic, continued reduction to see any positive signs. there's been no extra restrictions so there's no reason to think any reduction is coming.
NSW's hands are off the steering wheel now. there is no going back. Too much political capital was expended promising the public that vaccinations were the way to bring the 2019 way of life back, and now that that has proven untrue, there's not really time to do anything else.
It's sort of funny how the national compact on what a close contact is had made so little difference to Covid restrictions in the ACT.
If you were vaccinated, both casual and close contacts had to get two PCR tests and quarantine for seven days (roughly, if negative).
Only thing that was changed is now close unvaccinated contacts have to quarantine for only seven days instead of fourteen, which makes a sort of sense; omicron doesn't really differentiate, and only 1.5% of the eligible population is unvaccinated, so not really much point to the differentiation to my untrained eye.
In the meantime, it's now "work from home if possible" too.
We'll have to see if we step up to lockdowns again, but without federal support, hard to say.
I am so happy this has happened in the last 4 weeks of my partner's pregnancy. Because really, what could possibly go wrong?

This is utterly ridiculous, but I am awaiting NZs turn to come soon. Especially with how idiots are constantly allowed to skip or get out of quarantine and then, funnily enough, always have the fucking variant etc.
Thankfully I can get my booster soon, so I should at least have the best protection I can have - but not many people around here have had the time to get booster shots. So Omnicron could be a serious issue when it finally hits the bottom part of NZ - especially as we were spared Delta for the most part.

Argument with a family member today who is bemoaning our ongoing border closure & says we should have just let it rip 6 months ago and it would all be over by now. Drilling down a bit, they genuinely thought COVID infection prevented future infections. The idea that a virus could more or less freely reinfect you whenever it wanted was mindblowing to them & they've completely changed their attitude. Props to them for changing an opinion in the face of information, but it makes me wonder how many "rip the bandaid off" folks have their opinions anchored in this false immunity belief.

I'm trying to get what little bit of mental health necessary socialising in now, before I get locked back in my house again.
Maybe not the best, safest strategy. but it's what I need to do for me and mine for the moment

That's what we all thought back before we needed yearly6 monthly 4 monthly boosters. Get the vax/disease and you're good.
There's no way it doesn't.
This isn't going to be over by May (election must be called by then) and 'normal' is not going to be the normal promised when lockdowns or reality hits.

So if you go out say, 4 times a week, that's $40-$60 to leave your house that week.
One is cheap. One each day is definitely not cheap. Either the government is going to send a crate to every house, or it's not worth it.
Hint - they're not sending a crate to every house in NSW.
85 in the ACT today
We only ever had maximum 50/day with Delta.
Colour me surprised.
Of course Scotty is saying masks should just be recommended, not mandatory.
Most likely because testing centres are at their limits.
My cynical side says it’s because he wants to try to cut asymptotic positive cases out if the daily numbers.

Is there any sign, you know .. all of this has any actual electoral consequences?

Chances are, LNP will coast along on fumes and get in again because Labor can't run a campaign worth a shit.
