here's a neat thing about Mario speedrunning:
this is a video combining every sub-5 minute run in Super Mario Bros. 1, all at the same time. The way it's done is really neat, where they captured all the inputs and converted them all to TASes
You can really see the frame rule in action, which is cool.
(The frame rule is a system in SMB1 where the game only checks to see if you've finished a level and touched the flagpole every 21 frames, about 1/3rd of a second, so running it involves an incredible amount of optimization as any time saves that are less than a 3rd of a second are basically meaningless while also alowing for imperfect play or improvisation since it doesn't matter if you miss the flagpole by 1-20 frames)
Imagine a bus with that makes stops on a regular interval...

Plagiarism may be stealing, but it also helps many people finish their video essays on time, so it's impossible to say if it's bad or not.

So, because apparently a four hour video wasn't enough, I decided to watch one of the hbomberguy videos I hadn't caught yet and went with the Tommy Tallarico one and I could not believe how deep that rabbit hole goes, to the point where I'm not sure whether Tallarico was lying about being able to make the Intellivision, or if he was lying about making it at all in the first place, but he had to be lying about something.
I am not aware of any "insider" information on the situation personally, but I know that DJ Slope went through and documented all the public info about the Intellivision. From that video, I get the strong impression that:
- Tommy saw an opportunity to buy an IP he loved
- Tommy needed a way to justify that purchase
- Tommy wanted something flashier than a retro/classic console (and attempts to do that via crowdfunding had already failed)
- The Intellivision staff tried to make it happen but were out of their depth
- Tommy's nature of self-aggrandizing just basically sabotaged the whole effort
If you have another 4 hours, though this is easier to watch in pieces or skip around in. I do feel the digression about adult games is out of place and Slope not having another video to fit that into....
Edit: Oh huh. I have not watched this, but Slope did a livestream about 3 months back catching up on events through 2023 after posting his video. Gonna need to check that out.
...but if you don't have the time to listen to Thomas Talaricus lie for five years just scroll past the titles and watch them go from "Amico revealed" to "Amico delayed" to "Amico Controller and Cornhole in Trouble?!" to "Intellivision Amico NFTs (?!) and J Allard SEC Issues" real quick.

I've been following this year's Marble League really closely. For whatever reason, I like supporting the home team - the ducks last year, and the bumblebees this year. So of course the final event is gonna be a nailbiter, with all sorts of twists and turns... literally.

Hmm I didn't watch the original videos and I of course haven't actually read the documents to back up Jirad's video, but a guy saying it's illegal to file without a signature should have been a tip off he was making shit up.

My eyes were basically rolling down the street during the entire karl jobst video. Dude loves to talk confidently about stuff he knows jack shit about.

See, I just don't know who any of these people are, so it sounds like someone who has no idea what the fuck accused someone else of grifting for a content video of views, and it turns out that guys an idiot?

Basically some people went looking into a charity run by a youtuber (Jirad) and they found some irregularities. Then a youtuber (Karl Jobst) made a big video about how it's clearly fraud happening and how he's absolutely positive that shit isn't all that it seems (despite coming to a variety of 'rock hard conclusions' that were like, choice E in the CYOA for that situation).
So now Jirad has linked to all the tax info, stated that he 'welcomes the probable incoming audit by the IRS,' and that he is not going to let someone tarnish his reputation for views with the implication that he's contacted an attorney about a defamation suit. He uses the word slander even. The video was clearly recorded in different segments and you can tell that it was prooooooooooooooooooooobably because Jirad was fuckin furious. Like he looked ready to rip my eyeballs out through the monitor.
And the thing is, Jirad is right. Assuming everything he said about the charity is accurate (i am not being paid to look through tax documents so I ain't gonna), then yeah. Jobst did a whoopsiedoodle slander that meets like, every single textbook criteria of slander.
For those that want further reading, I looked up and found this definition for slander and defamation which lines up with my understanding of it from law school:

He's usually not posted here and I don't watch his videos, but you may remember him from his unbelievably time consuming mission to buy every game on the eShop https://youtu.be/ujHUMG0Uovs

Smosh seems like a pretty cool place to work since Ian and Anthony bought it back
Every interaction they have not only with the other cast members but the production crew makes it feel like it's one of those rare places where everybody mostly genuinely enjoys each others' company not just as coworkers but as people

Thing is, there's still some pretty weird stuff with the fact that the donations weren't made over such a long period of time. That's where the core of the issue is - why that happened. But the cross-country misunderstanding of law, the general tone of all the accusations, etc... not great.
On the other hand, Jirard saying he did nothing illegal... but dodging the shady looking stuff or the immoral/unethical appearing stuff.. might not have helped his case. I personally didn't like the video ending with a fade to black and THEN an appeal to emotion, as it's kind of a bad rhetorical habit. Of course... I would've preferred if it was just one take, but I get how hard that would've been to film.
I've pointed out to a few people that non-profit financial stuff is SUPER complex and weird and fraught, and basically requires dedicated folks. The slight discrepancies in dollar amount is not a smoking gun.
The "This document isn't signed" bit just makes the accusers look horrible. I'm really hoping Karl and Muda don't respond other than to acknowledge the release and to wait for the gov't to do what it is going to do. They especially shouldn't monetize any further videos on Jirard, or monologue, or add commentary or anything like that.
I'm still curious what triggered all this. Like.. what made them look into the charity?
(FYI I'm on the side of "lots of fuckups on all sides, I hope Jirard can get out of this okay.)
