It's an RPG, so the answer is to grind. The difficulty spike happens right as an optional fight system opens up, one that people find kinda one tone.
If you ignore that right as it opens, the next story mission would be very hard, but I don't know if it's beatable with 0 grind.
I went for the reward on that sidestuff so I never encountered it, the entire game was easy for me. (I also did not do the optional dungeon at the end which is a giant grind and a giant pain even then)

Yakuza Like A Dragon is on sale on Steam for $12. Ive heard it's good but has some massive difficulty spike? Can I just play on lower difficulty and avoid that? Is the DLC worth it just to make the game easier?
There is an optional dungeon midway through that Yakuza LAD introduces and says "Hey, you should probably do this" and yes, you should absolutely do it or the next story section will wreck you.
I didn't think Kiryu looked like he had aged that much until he put up his hair and put on his old suit. Dude looks rough, like he's feeling all of his age and illness.
I mostly liked it. I was a bit bummed we don't get to see the reunion of Haruka and Kiryu on screen, but the ending with him in the hospital really seems to imply that they've already had that talk offscreen, as Haruto seems to know Kiryu.
Honestly, if it was anyone but Ichiban, I wouldn't have bought the Eiji redemption arc. But man the scene of him carrying Eiji down the street really sells it.
I'm also glad that, after like three or four Yakuza games ending incredibly bittersweet, this one is a lot more hopeful and happy.
I went with the Hero edition of Like A Dragon since it was on sale for only like $2 extra; I got a bit into chapter 2, and it's really addictive! the story is a lot better than I was expecting, as the early part is heavy with cutscenes. the combat so far seems pretty simple but guessing it gets more depth later on. for $14 seems like it's worth it so far!
You're in for a treat, man. Keep us posted on your thoughts!!

Finished a little bit ago after a marathon session blitzing Chapter 13 and the finale in one sitting. I'm on the verge of passing out so am not coherent enough to say much, but what I can say is that I'm happy and satisfied. There were things I was hoping this game would do and it did a lot of them. It fixed a lot that had rubbed me the wrong way about some of the previous Kiryu stories and feels like it did justice to characters and threads that had been languishing for a long time.

I am seriously getting tilted by the Sujimon Roulette Wheel this session. My attempts to get the timing down leads to me hitting the dud almost every time, pretending not to care and hitting it at random gets me the dud, it's wounding my pride at this point.

Oh man. I was down to my last 2 aloha links and decided trying to find just 2 on my own was going to be too hard so I looked them up. 1 was a shopkeeper I missed, easy enough.
And the other... is one that only pops out at night.
Now you may remember me being stuck in night time forever the other day... well u decided to do this right after it finally switched back to day hahaha.
So now I'm 199/200 and I have to wait for the next time switch. If only I had done this *slightly* sooner.
Couple of things from Chapter 8, nothing major just some things I liked.
Saeko getting drunk much slower than everyone else is a neat touch.
Some of these reminisces are wild:
"Wow, I've sure thrown a lot of people off bridges."
"I had this crazy dream where I was a dude called Sakamoto Ryoma."
I'm curious how Majima, Saejima and Akiyama fit into this.
At the point I'm at right now, they seem conspicuous by their absence.
Great, now I'm stuck on the Animal Crossing minigame. I don't want to leave it until I get five stars, but I can't play it for too long at a time. Can we delay FF7 Rebirth a couple months?

I made the terrible mistake of putting that Sonic "I'm here" song on my game playlist.
I don't even like that kinda music but it felt perfectly silly for Ichi running around side questing.
And now... It's been stuck in my head for like 3 straight days. Send help!

Im kind of disappointed to read that Ichiban as a character goes downhill apparently in the new game, Ive been liking him so far in Yakuza Like A Dragon
What do you mean by this because in my time with Infinite Wealth so far he's still been great

Idk if this is what Zavian is referring to but the game's caught the eye of the anime virgin outrage mill with dweebs on youtube and the steam boards whining about woke localization, "censorship," betraying the TRUE SPIRIT OF AUTHENTIC NIHON etc. A lot of it is focused on (of course) a woman employed at the localization studio who from what I gather also worked on some JRPGs or official anime subs that these people had been mad about in the past, and a lot of the rest of it is focused on Yong Yea.
I've been playing the game with Japanese audio, but I recently learned about how amazing one of the new Karaoke songs is in English. Now I truly understand the suffering Kiryu has been through.

I will be honest, the idea that Like a Dragon is getting criticized for suddenly becoming woke or progressive is very funny to me, considering the games have always been about the marginalized in Japanese society.

Oh yeah it's absolutely outrage tourism. It's all the same people who freaked out when Skullgirls removed panty shots or whatever, they have no attachment to Yakuza at all.

ahhh okay
Different strokes and all that, I guess, but I honestly struggle to imagine the kind of person who could have had that reaction without dipping into mean and unflattering characterizations.
"Annoying" is one of those pejoratives like "pretentious" where I REALLY need the speaker to provide some concrete examples, because the variance in what sets people off is SO wide. Do they annoy the speaker the way a Claptrap type does? Or do they annoy the speaker in a way that that anybody who expresses any emotion annoys them, because emotions generally annoy them? Or are they just sick of Matthew Mercer?
Also, with Infinite Wealth specifically it's a hard complaint to parse because a lot of the cast is kind of supposed to annoy each other! Nanba, Adachi, Tomi, and Ichiban especially are all very much written to annoy some of the other party members in exactly the way friends can kind of annoy each other sometimes. Like, in a walk-and-talk Adachi might tell a pointless story about his credit cards, but it's funny because he winds up annoying the other party members.

Are these the same morons who got up in arms because the localization translated Dwight Mendez saying "Yare yare" as "Dios mio", despite the fact that it is an extremely accurate translation being said by a Hispanic character played and modeled after Notable Hispanic Man Danny Trejo?

Probably as these kinds of people tend to say that any kind of localization instead of translation is bad. I've even seen them just say localization is censorship.
In so, so many of Nanba's meal chats he annoys someone in the group and every time it is between one and all three of funny, charming and/or earnest. I love the banter between these idiots so much, it's honestly become a highlight of the game for me.

Btw, everyone, don't sleep on Sujimancy. If you fully awaken and level the five Kiwami Sujimon Ichiban can equip them and they have like 999 magic power apiece. Ichiban does as much damage with a 35 MP cast as Kiryu does with his Dragon ultimate.
I'm into the postgame Big Swell dungeon and it's really neat. Each time you complete one of the dungeon segments you get a long (10 minutes?) cutscene of the gang hanging out and goofing off. Like a long interactive denoument. It's a really nice way to gradually ramp down from the high of the climax, flex all those levels and gear you accumulated but didn't get to use, and detach from the game. It's helping a lot with that post-game listlessness.
I have Ichiban as a Sujimancer but I dressed him up in Adachi's shiny suit, and it lends an air of "wrestling promoter" to the move set that I really think is additive

I only recently learned about the phrase 'tourism', and I kind of hate it, since I got called one for criticizing Yu-No... even though I've been playing VNs since the 90s.
Beat this game last night. Still needs time to fully sink in, but early thoughts are that while I think I liked the main story of 7 more, this game had some really good character moments that elevated the narrative. I don't think the main villains were as compelling as some of the other games, but a lot of the other new characters like Tomizawa, Chitose, and Yamai were really good.
I really liked what they did with Kiryu in this game. When they first announced the dual protagonist structure of the game I was a bit disappointed. Kiryu has had his time in the sun and I didn't want him to constantly come back and overshadow Ichiban. I felt it would hinder this franchise from being able to move forward. Turns out I didn't have to worry. Kiryu's story here does a great job of wrangling the different threads of his story into a satisfying bow while also giving him some real character development.
Gameplay wise it's 7, but improved in basically every way. The only real issue I have with the combat is that sometimes I don't want to do a combo or weapon attack, but can't get near the enemy without triggering one of those. I also can't think of a minigame that I dreaded doing, which it feels like every Yakuza game has at least one.

It's in there DEEP.
Ichiban + samurai + breaker = Mugen from Samurai Champloo.
Guess I have a new plan for him!
I actually just completely randomly stumbled upon his brother while reading MMA news and was like "woah that's the same name and it looks like him!"
Then went to his wiki and didn't see LAD so I was a little confused until I noticed he had a brother doing the same thing haha.
