Lets smash waves of monsters for loot in the [ARPG] thread
Posts
I've never really been into ARPGs other than Diablo 3, which I kind of consider the standard and what I want out of any ARPG. Mainly, big numbers and flashing lights and silly skill interactions.
Can I get something similar out of Diablo IV? Did I just pick a boring class? What class should I play? Or do I just need to put in the time and it'll eventually get there?
How long ago did you play D4? Because they've spent the first year of D4 making it D3-next basically. High mobility, big numbers, flashy plays, even the end game feels similar now. If you have the expansion you've got a couple weeks to try the very broken Spiritborn before it gets nerfed. If not, try something like Chain Lightning Sorc.
e: I will add though that I really enjoyed Werewolf Druid when I played it for a season. It gets pretty flashy with some gear and the right uniques, like the weapon that makes all your skills werewolf skills and keeps you in werewolf form.
Thanks for the info, good to know the big flashy stuff is in there. I should probably just play it on whatever setting isn't the story. Clicking through dialogue wasn't doing anything for me, and I'd rather just level quicker and churn through loot.
Chain Lightning Sorc sounds great, I'll give that a shot next.
That's surprising, Bear looks so tanky at first. But I can't complain, I like Bear better aesthetically anyway.
I found all of D4 insanely boring. I played on the hardest difficulty they'd let me and I never died once. I'm sure the end game is completely different, but by the time I was done with the story I just uninstalled, I didn't have it in me to keep going.
I hated the story in both D3 and D4, but at least the game play in D3 clicked faster for me.
all three elements have some very fun main attack skills and ultimates, and the standard approach of using fireball enchantment means things are blowing up constantly no matter what build you go for
cmon she draws the line at children
unless provoked
I never really figured this out either, I just landed on "this is the option for if you literally just can't be assed to do the fight and want to carry on with what you were doing"
Smite is probably my favorite skill! It's awesome and can be used in like 15 different ways. I'm doing self-cast lightning with devotion, which is a fairly common unique:
It is really, really, annoying to go back to an ARPG without PoE2's WASD control scheme now that I've played with it for 20'ish hours.
Yeah everybody else is on this quest to save the day.The witch is just here because she's having fun.
Related to that, I'm really enjoying the merc's voice lines. He's pretty hilarious.
yea, this is something i knew would happen - until wasd is added to more/all of the other big arpgs im not gonna use it here
So let's celebrate by all going out and buying the same burger. -transmet
I feel like mostly, if you're making a game that could be considered an ARPG with mindful combat, it ends up taking another step or two away and ends up a Zeldalike or an isometric Soulslike or a twin-stick action game or something. A Tunic or a Bastion or a Death's Door or the like.
I'd imagine it's because 'you have a ton of options for builds and find fancy loot' and 'intricately designed fights where you always have to think' are in tension by default, so it's easier to just forsake one or the other.
Alternative answer: Yes, it's called Nioh (and I never could click with it because it's not enough of a Soulslike or enough of an ARPG to light up the neurons I reserve for either genre properly).
I thought to answer No Rest for the Wicked, but the parts I saw did pretty much fall into the usual Zelda/soulslike comparisons.
There are times where poe2 has you fighting methodically against fewer enemies, but commonly (and ultimately) it’s a bunch of enemies again.
Hades also comes to mind, at least the first (I didn’t dive into the second yet). Hades shifts the randomness off of item stats and into powers and such, and you move one “room” at a time through various encounters of one to a handful of enemies.
found corpsewade then chober chaber, so melee summoner witch? chober chaber has an int requirement of 100, so to titans grip it with a sceptre i need 300str 300int... which i shall do
unfortunately this means many many levels of stat nodes but still playable enough for now
we have defeated cruel count geonor and will probs have finished the game before i can actually titans grip this stupid mace that has 1/3 the dps of a normal mace but by god it must be done

this is kinda why cruel bosses need help - this character has one damage circle and a level 33 unique weapon and a 3s perfect strike is doing a number on him
arbiter down
also xesht too
some vods (spoilers obv)
Arbiter took 2x sets, even with 89 max fire res all his 1 shots still 1 shot my hp base. ES can hit like 25k es so they can usually tank a hit
my heart was racing during his last phase, i blocked most of his sword swings but keeping eyes on the insta kill zones during bullet hell is eye numbing
xesht was much easier but i almost died to his summon 3 hands ult
oh and we finally hit the motherlode
There are a few QoL tweaks to minions -- they move faster, get a little bit of melee splash damage, and basically float. So they can now actually navigate the arcane sanctuary and all sorts of stuff! But even bigger -- skelly mages are kind of awesome now. Poison skelly mages were swapped to bone spear, fire to fireball, lightning to lightning, and ice to ice blast (I think, looks slightly different though and I'm rusty). Turns out having them cast useful straight-line projectiles with some AoE is good! Toss in being able to summon every golem at once (not really specced into it, but for style), and it feels good
my level 95 friend finally found his first citadel
hes on ur tail
big citadel charlie they call him
ggg in hot water after this one

this is not correct and most likely a bug but hey joy
Hm, this reminds me of someone saying that CI didn't make Minion Pact basically free the way they expected. Wonder if you're considered to still have your non-CI maximum health under the hood, then.
EDIT: got confirmation its a bug so itll probs get squished first patch in new year
Moon Studios has an early access ARPGlike with a dark souls eseque strategic combat, it's called No Rest for the Wicked. One single normal enemy can absolutely embarass you if you don't block/roll/space properly. Because it's early access, I've done all the available content I care to do, so I'm no longer actively playing and just waiting for a patch. But while I played I had a blast with it. Then again, I like ARPGs and I like Elden Ring, so merging the two was probably always going to work for me.
