There will be a LARGE apocalypse 40k game with the 5th ed rules on saturday.
There will be assorted Fantasy games, but historically 40k has been more popular.
I'd love to give Warhammer / 40k a try, I've enjoyed the mythos of both but never had the cash to drop on a whole army for either. Does anyone know if there will be opportunities for newbies to cut our teeth (so to speak) on a quick round?
Man, I haven't been into the hobby for about 2 years now.... but I'm wondering if I should dust off my eldar and marines.
In other news, they already came out with a 5th effing edition? How long did 4th last? 2 years at the most? That's weak. Didn't they have 3rd ed for like 10 years?
Ehh, I don't know if I have any bits that would be any good in the new rule set. I remember 3rd to 4th edition was a minor rule revision, but all of the codicies got a major revamp. I have the 4th edition army books. Are there now 5th edition codicies I would have to worry about?
So what are the options for the demo armies. Are there just going to be like a few different races represented in 40k/fantasy or are all the armies going to be demoable?
emorimiku on
<emorimiku> j0z1e ... physically emotionally or mentally?
<j0z1e> ummmm, all three? at once?
On a related note, is Fantasy still in the 6th edition? If so, I have a 6th edition Lizardmen army (I forgot how many points worth) that I could possibly bring. Though I forget how to play, since I never had friends that were into it...
Don't bother bringing battlefleet, unless you do the paper cutout method and bring two fleets for people to play with. Brought my fleet a few years in a row, and I was the only one to show up with bfg.
This year I might bring a small ork or chaos army. Casual games only I think, rather than doing the all-day thing of the tourney.
* There will be a decent selection of 40k armies. We don't have them all, but we have a lot. All the codeces should be available.
* Fantasy selection will be slimmer, but still will have enough for demos.
More specifically:
*Warhammer Fantasy is in 7th edition now, but a 6th ed lizardmen army should still work, the same army book is in effect.
*40k 4th to 5th contains some minor tweaks to speed up gameplay and make the game more skill based.
I'm really looking forward to the big 40K Apocalypse game since this time I'm bringing my Orks and 2 Stompas and one Mekboy Stompa to the battle.
Although if I get off my duff and build two more Stompas, then I could put together a Dread Mob of 4 Stompas transporting Kans and Dreads. Maybe as an "I didn't bring anything, can I join in?" group for someone to borrow.
Which reminds me:
We'll have Apocalypse, Apocalypse:Reloaded, and all the online datasheets on hand, we're working on getting a copy of the Imperial Armor: Apocalypse book. Datasheets in these books will be the VASTLY preferred method of using any super-heavies/formations. Efforts will be made to use "Counts-as" in preference of custom datatsheets. Any custom sheets will require the approval of the game organizers.
This is just for simplicity in gameplay & speed concerns.
We have a surprise or two brewing for you over here on the planning side. From now till the event will be solid building/painting sprees for us.
Would anyone be interested in doing a Mordheim demo/campaign? I can bring enough models, terrain, the rulebook, etc. to get 3-4 people playing, and we might be able to get a continuous campaign running the whole weekend.

It would be super nice if Games Workshop actually were present to do some events/demos in PAX. Last time I went, Privateer Press had a venue to hold games, events, tournaments,etc...

According to the latest White Dwarf, the Fantastic Games store in Edmonds will be running a lot of Warhammer stuff, both 40K and Fantasy at PAX, including demo games and the like. I've been to some of the events/tourneys that they've held and they do a good job. I'm not worried about Warhammer being (literally) pushed into a corner of the Tabletop area this year.
But you're right. Every year the Privateer Press display has far outshone anything Games Workshop has put forth, from just the 40K card game while PAX was at Meydenbauer to the Warhammer Online vaporware the past two years.
To an outsider it really makes it seem that Privateer Press is the industry juggernaut, while Games Workshop is the smaller 'wanna-be' company which lacks focus.
I really want to see if GW have stepped up for their booth in the Exhibition Hall this year, or if it will be another video of some bald british git saying "We're the blokes who make those miniatures," while he holds up a sprue for a second or two before tossing it over his shoulder to gush about Warhammer Online.
I'd love to bring my stuff and play, but honestly, I just don't have the models for it without proxying. I have about 500 points worth of Imperial guard, but not the right models for 1HQ/2Troops.
That seems to be getting the most interest, and the OP is keeping the list at the top updated frequently with informational links and what-not.
I have the Mordheim rulebook plus the first issue of Best of Town Cryer (random happenings, dwarves, orcs and goblins), and right now I have warbands for skaven, humans (2-3 warbands worth), dwarves, pirates, and orcs & goblins. I also have enough terrain to fill a 4'x4' table.

That's the brilliant part about apocalypse, there's NO force organization!
Want to run 5 elites? BRING EM!
Want to run 10 HQ? BRING EM!
Only One troop? BRING IT!!

Yes, but I don't think ~500 points is really appropriate for apoc, especially since only one model(one of my tanks) is even painted.
Its all good though, I'd rather not try and find a way to bring my stuff on the plane. My guardsmen are fragile, in more than one way.
If you want to play in the game I have plenty of stuff you could borrow. I'm helping Lunacite out with the game anyway, would you prefer Imperial, Chaos, Necrons, or Eldar? This option is open to anyone as well, just treat the models nicely!
I'm sure I'll hunt you guys down and see if anyone around has extra's to use. I'm personally an Imperial Guard player, and would probably be best(as I don't know other armies well enough to construct lists, etc).
OH OH OH OH! I want to play 40k with Delmont's Eldar!
I have a very small amount of Iyanden Eldar left over from back when I played 40k, but not enough to play with and a lot of them are broken. I have like 12 wraithguard, a wraithlord, 20 guardians, 3 warlocks, and a farseer. My farseer is the best model I've ever painted. I heart him so much. I had a big thing for Eldar back when I was into 40k. Sadly I haven't been able to play in years.
I haven't played 40k since 3rd edition, so I might need some coaching. But I'd love to play. I'd be more than happy to teach someone Mordheim (which is very easy, far less rules than 40k or fantasy) in exchange for coaching on 6th edition 40k.

I see the facts listed in the post above, but I find it so hard to believe that 4th edition has been in use as long as it has. 4th edition really feels like it was just a blip of time. This is why I hate GW and got out of the hobby.
With WYSIWYG, they end up making your models outmoded by changing the gear that a ranger carries, and your rangers don't look like that so are illegal or whatever.
They also make it so that people who are on a budget and bought an exact amount of points worth of an army are fucked, because they change the army lists so that your army is worthless (I played Alaitoc Eldar in 3rd edition, which was completely removed from 4th, so I had a vanilla army that sucked).
I understand they are a business so they have to do this to survive, and a lot of rules DO get better. But I just got sick of it. LOL, but I still have all my armies (Eldar, Black Templar, Necrons, and a few misc pieces from Nids and some other stuff).
I wouldn't be opposed to getting rid of it at PAX. At least the Eldar (of which I have over 1000 points).
Just on WYSIWYG, thats probably the main house rule me and my friends have. AKA, not having it.
We aren't exactly made out of money. We strive to have WYSIWYG for our models, but hell, you want all your leman russes to have lascannons instead of heavy bolters? Or that squad of guardsman are actually stormtroopers, because they are freaking expensive and you just want to try them out for a game?
Sure, because we aren't dicks. General rule is, if its fairly easy to remember(all X is now Y, etc), and you are doing it because you can't afford to have every configuration you'd possibly use ready to go at a moments notice... you're fine.
Yea, most people are actually like that. As for the ranger thing, if its a Ranger model it is legal. Pure and simple. There is nothing that makes the old Ranger models illegal in 4th or even 5th edition. When new books come out some armies need some tweaks to still work, but an all ranger/pathfinder based army is still perfectly viable.
As for the borrowed armies looks like Eldar is spoken for. I don't have all that much of them built as of now, somewhere in the neighborhood of 1500 points I'd guess. No guardians what so ever. Go go aspect warriors!

The ranger/pathfinder army relied heavily on the disruption table from the Craftworld Codex. It made heavy enemy armies more managable by way of pinning/reinforcements. A lot of people considered it cheap at first, but when they beat me in close combat slaughter, it really didn't matter. The table just delayed the inevitable, and gave me a chance to pick off a few more monsters before things got to my rangers and ripped them up.
Then I'd have to have my aspects roam around and clean up if I wanted the win. But yeah, vanilla now can take the pathfinders. I ended up buying the 4th edition Codex where they introduced the Auctarch. Is there a 5th edition Eldar Codex on the way or out yet?
The eldar codex is relatively new, and was apparently made with 5th edition in mind. The codex order seems to be Space Marines, Imperial Guard, and Dark Eldar, though not nessecarially in that order(though Space Marines are likely first). Orks, Chaos, and Eldar seem to be considered 5th edition ready, and Necrons/Tyranids may or may not be getting new editions after those three.
I don't see why your strategy won't work, though. Pinning is the same as it was, and I don't believe reinforcements were changed much. I will say I don't really know anything about the disruption table, but it should be the same as it was, as the codex doesn't change, just the major rule set.

The disruption table was in the old Craftworld Eldar codex, which has been replaced with the new Eldar Codex. A lot of the changes made in 5th ed have helped gun-line armies, most notably the ability to consolidate from one combat into another has been lost. Add in a couple of scouting/infiltrating units coming on from the short board edges & you've got a lot of bait/switch that can be done with your more elite Aspect units.
Bring 'em out and give 'em a try, there'll be plenty of people to play.

Right. The Disruption Table is officially out of effect. I only ever played 1 game of 4th edition, and never a single game of 5th edition (I've never seen the rules even). So I'll feel like a fish out of water.
